After a 1978 game between the Baltimore Colts and Cleveland Browns, Colts owner Robert Irsay (Bob Irsay) announced that he was firing every single assistant coach on the staff... even though he had not discussed this whatsoever with head coach Ted Marchibroda. This is the story behind why Irsay did this, as well as his eccentric history as the owner of the Colts, and the aftermath of this announcement

It’s either him or Irsay. I’m giving the edge to Irsay personally, just because for all his eccentricity, for the most part, Al Davis knew what he was doing. He had a method to his madness I’m not quite sure what Irsay was doing half the time

Agree! No wonder Elway refused to report to the Colts. Although I have great respect for Ernie Accorsi. Colts were so bad that Belichick left for the Lions after 1975. 😀
@jefferyalberter9922
@jefferyalberter9922 3 жыл бұрын
Apparently he was advised not to report by none other than Bert Jones, who had firsthand knowledge of what a mess the Colts were. Elway also had hard feelings about the team's coach, Frank Kush (who Elway and his dad, Jack Elway knew and disliked when they were at Stanford, and Kush was coach at Arizona State).
@r.williamcomm7693
@r.williamcomm7693 3 жыл бұрын
@@jefferyalberter9922 Hey do you have a source on Bert Jones warning Elway about the Colts? The reason I ask is that Ernie Accorsi still loves Bert Jones to this day & of course Accorsi drafted Elway first overall. Imagine if he’d taken his second choice, Dan Marino. I love the 1983 QB draft. Of course Accorsi resigned after the season over Bob Irsay trading Elway for a song. Regardless of Jones I agree 100% that Elway’s father warned him that Frank Kush was a “strict taskmaster” & possibly even made comments that Elway wouldn’t start right away & would find himself in a humbling position until he worked his way out of it. Finally Elway wanted a 5 year $5M contract & Irsay apparently didn’t want to commit to $1M per year which makes sense considering that I don’t think many teams even made $1M annual profits in 1983. 😀

Everything Bob Irsay did was crazy. He should have never been allowed to own an NFL team. Irsay bought the Rams from the estate of Dan Reeves. Reeves moved the Rams to Los Angeles from Cleveland after winning the 1945 NFL championship. Carroll Rosenbloom owned the Colts. He hated Memorial Stadium and hinted at moving to Tampa. Rosenbloom and Irsay traded teams. Irsay got an aging team in a dump of a stadium, albeit with a rabid fan base that he destroyed. Rosenbloom grew to hate the Coliseum and seeing a division champ play in front of over 30K empty seats at home games. The Colts moved to Indy, who built a new stadium while Baltimore dithered. The Rams went to St. Louis, where they sold out until Kroenke bought the team and sabotaged them as a pretense to return to LA Maryland put together a plan to build a new stadium and lured the Browns.

You got to admit that even though Jim Ursay had his issues with addiction he was more level headed then his dad was. It was one thing that Robert Ursay was a raging alcoholic in private but it was quite another when his drunken behavior bled into the work place. His behavior in the workplace would've never been allowed today.

I don't think you ever really move on with a team like the Colts and the love affair this city had with them. That goofball Irsay destroyed the team, and ripped it away from the fans and this city, but I'd be willing to bet that it was a parting gift from Carroll Rosenbloom. Rosenbloom had to know that Irsay was an irrational nut job who would decimate the Colts and the team history. I'm not convinced that Rosenbloom would do that to Baltimore on purpose, because I think he was more pissed at Shula, but he had to at least have an inkling that something would come about with Irsay at the helm. before this kneeling crap I was a fan of the Ravens and loved NFL football, buy nowadays, I live with my Baltimore Colts memories. I'm one that will never move on.

I am from Baltimore and you people do not know what you talking about.First of all the owner of the Redskins at that time Jack Kent Cook did not want a team in Baltimore and he had been convincing Irsey and NFL owners to move to Colts out of Baltimore for years before they moved.The Washington, DC area has always been jealous of the rich sports tradition in Baltimore with the competitive nature of the Orioles and Colts.They took the Bullets from Baltimore in 1974 and that tells a lot and they blocked Baltimore from getting an expansion team and now the owner of the Nationals are trying to get the Orioles to move out of Baltimore. Nationals and the Orioles have been to court for control of the MASN network in that area.

Washington, DC do not want any sports franchise in Baltimore and they was really jealous of Baltimore when they was winning NFL championships in 1958 and 1959 and the Orioles and Colts dominance in the 70s.They wanted an NBA team and the NBA would not grant them a team,so the took the Bullets out of Baltimore. They was really jealous of the greatness of Johnny Unitas and the great Orioles teams.They had MLB team at once and they was called the Senators

Marty Domres was a terrible quarterback; Bert Jones wasn't. You did tell how Erasy acquired the Colts. When Dan Reeves, the owner of the Rams, and no not that Dan Reeves, running back of the Cowboys and head coach of Broncos, died, Ersay bought the Rams from the estate of Dan Reeves. And then TRADED the Rams to Carrol Rosenbloom, owner of the Colts, for the Colts. That has never happened before or since. Oh, nice Hill Street Blues reference, Captain Freedom.
