This made me laugh! And your phrasing is intense, I like it. As a kid, when adults asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, eventually I learned they just wanted me to answer some kind of boring job/career 🙄 The boring answer I'd give instead of my _real_ answer would relate to it, for my own fun. Like: Horse veterinarian (pegasus!), dog trainer (a cute doggo!), archeologist (all the ancient Greece things!), and of course anything I could relate to _dinosaurs!_ 😁🦖🦕

To add on to the whole "Making Twilight immortal is pretty dark considering she'll have to watch all her friends die eventually" point, there's this really heartbreaking comic in which it shows a older Discord presumably years after the deaths of the mane 6 (minus Twilight) wherein he weeps after getting a message left for him by Fluttershy, and one of the panels is Fluttershy's spirit hugging him as he cries. the problem was with how she was portrayed and treated. the complaints were sent by parents, not people who know who this "character" even was, so this was dropped with 0 context for both parents and kids alike. so you randomly get a disabled coded character who does nothing but mess everything up and that rainbow gets somewhat mad at? thats the part that was controversial. to have only 1 explicitely disabled character in the series and making them into that is mean
@babycakelings
@babycakelings Жыл бұрын
@PandguinGod Unintentional as in you don't mean to get them XD. Nobody chooses to have a disablity. You don't just wake up one day and decide you want to have ADHD or to no longer see or for your legs to just suddenly not work. Your either born with the disability or something happens to cause it. If we could just suddenly not be disabled, we would. It's called a disability for a reason, because it disables us in some way. As someone with Autism, the majority of us would if we could just suddenly become normal. The thing is that's impossible and all attempts to make us normal typically just end up with people torturing autistic children, or killing us. So after years of being mistreated all in the name of a "cure" autistic adults have decided it's no longer ok. We know there's no cure, so why beat ourselves up about it. So instead we're accepting of our issues and become proud of our differences so that our mental health isn't ruined. The issues we do have, we'd rather work around then be harmed in the attempt at a cure. But even though I'm happy to be autistic now and proud of who I am, it's still not something I'd choose intentionally. That's why it's rather funny that a character people often say may be disabled had it happen unintentionally, like real life disabled people have happen.

As an autistic 14 year old with a lazy eye and speech impediment when Derpy hooves got censored, seeing adults calling things that I had “offensive” was crushing - I know it seems dumb to get upset about now, but I was a bullied, poor, undiagnosed (at the time) autistic, self conscious, clumsy and emotionally unstable teenager who relied heavily on escapism, which I could only ever get from watching mlp and spongebob clips on KZbin and watching grown ass adults say things like “they made her into a r***rd” and “they’ve ruined that character for my kids, nobody talks like that except r***rds” (those are the comments I remember) over things I related to personally just killed my self esteem

Also.... One thing the brony fandom constantly forgot is that they were not the main demographic. Hasbro made a new MLP show with the express interest in toy sales. Their market was girls between 4-8. Disney Princess demographic. Like Spiderman for boys of the same age. After all, Hasbro is a toy company first and foremost. What are traditionally girl's toys? Babies. Princesses. Weddings. Fashion Dolls. They are key components in the market for any successful toy line for the demographic. So OF COURSE they added Cadence and Flurry Heart. And princess Twilight? A power fantasy for young girls. You say the awkward, bookish girl can become a beautiful princess? Oh, the girls will EAT THAT UP as empowerment. After all, the Disney Princess franchise is almost literally that in its entirety. In conclusion, Hasbro made all the right moves right when they needed to in order to push their products, and we are LUCKY there was enough passion to continue the writing, music, and overall quality of the show as well after Faust left.

I was one of the lucky few who weren't too big in the actual fandom part. I only cared about the show, not the fans. The few fan animations I _did_ consume were fairly vanilla, and if I am remembering correctly, one was mentioned here. It was the double sonic rainboom one. The other would be Smile.Hd. Definitely not as vanilla, but I didn't understand what was actually going on, so it didn't leave much of a mark on me. I suppose being a retired obsessive fnaf kid has some perks, seeing as that was the only fandom I genuinely cared about. Edit: OH! I remember the slenderman flutershy video as well. And.., other violent stuff. So, disregard whatever I said up there. I forgot about my early tween years and violent gore phases. I found some messed up shit.

For the Nurse Red Heart thing, it's actually wrong because the Geneva Convention only says you're not allowed to have the Red Cross on a military tank and use it to attack the enemy. A tank with a cross is supposed to tell the other side that the tank will not fire on them and only help the injured. What most likely happened, and what you probably meant, was that the company that owns the symbol of the Red Cross, Johnson & Johnson, will not allow it to be used for profit by organizations that aren't in the medical field, which is why Hasbro most likely changed it to avoid a lawsuit with Johnson & Johnson. I hope this was helpful 😅

That's what I thought. I see this come up in videogame issues all the time. I wish a precedent would be established to put a stop to the lawsuits because a red plus sign to show that something is a hospital or someone is a nurse has nothing to do with The Red Cross.

Honestly as a disabled guy, it's kinda sad what happened to Derpy. I understand that she had some slightly "offensive" traits, but it's even sadder that disabled traits are automatically seen as offensive and not just, you know, traits. Edit because people keep fighting in the comments: • I was a kid when I watched MLP. That is why I was so happy to see an MLP character. • I'm not saying they definitely shouldn't hsve changed it. I understand why they did, I just personally liked her.

The derpy thing was interesting because normally, the name would be fine. Pushing it but okay. But My Little Pony was for toddlers and you have to be incredibly politically correct. You wouldn't see blues clues or the Wiggles calling someone "derpy." And you can't risk an abled child calling another child with crossed eyes "derpy" or accident give a name to something without responsibly making every child comfortably. I don't agree with changing her eyes. Cross eyed kids need a pony too. But the rename was understandable.
@wavelengthrecords-1
@wavelengthrecords-1 Жыл бұрын
@@ashleytyraisaacs well, i suppose that's a fair point. I still don't believe having a cross eyed character called derpy is pushing any boundaries because it's really up to the viewer how they interpret it. derpy does not have to be offensive. however, i am aware of how careful kids shows need to be with how children could repeat what they say. so i guess it's really just unfortunate given the demographic rather than the character itself.

Exactly! Her first appearence was her making mistakes and getting scolded several times. They made her come off as being incompetent and that can be incredibly harmful, especially since she was the first canonically disabled character in the series. It would've been so much better if she had helped with preparations and made a more minor mistake than almost seriously injuring a member of the main cast. That way, she could've been introduced as a helpful and endearingly clumsy character that people probably would've responded much more positively to.

The guy who did Double Rainboom is, in fact, a professor of 2D animation at SCAD now. I'm a senior in SCAD's 3D animation program currently directing a capstone film (fancy wording for "senior film") and they've employed a LOT more restrictions and rules since Double Rainboom came out. You definitely cannot have any pre-existing characters, film must be 3 minutes long or under, all assets, sound, and music must be original, etc. They've also banned outside animation help this year, which was a controversial decision among students lol. Some of you have probably seen/heard about Legend of Pipi, which was a (very wonderful) SCAD film from last year. That film had literal industry professionals working on it alongside students (I believe some Helluva Boss animators did some animation for it?). That film came out great, but a lot of other films depending on outside help struggled when said outside help flaked on deadlines and sometimes completely dropped out of the project altogether. Now everything is 100% student run (with guidance by professors of course) and student made! Hope this answers some questions! :))

recent scad graduate here! while pipi came out really good, it kind of left others in the dust who didn't have access to anyone in the industry. we had a team of about twenty people, only three of us being full-time animators. we struggled to get a film out that the school wouldn't even give the time of day anyway because they couldn't believe we could do it. it was really disheartening to the team because it felt like our hard work was being drastically overshadowed by people who had an unfair edge in the first place. while i don't think ALL outside help should be banned, i'm kind of glad they'll hopefully be more mindful of stuff like that in the future. in any case, best of luck with the short film!

I think one missing is the whole Fighting is Magic debacle. It was a fighting game with the MLP characters, but it got so big and popular that it was going to be featured on EVO, so Hasbro did its thing and sent them a C&D. After that, Lauren Faust approached the developers and offered to do a whole reading for the main 6 characters and give them some lore to work on, and after 7 years, the game finally got a multi-plat release with two completely original characters and 3 more coming. I'm just happy for the devs because it's a really good game.

I was a brony as a teen girl, and it was probably one of the most toxic spaces I could've been in at that time. No one should put themselves into groups with so many chronically online men, especially as a teen girl. They found so many ways to squash my joy for my a pretty innocent show. That said, I'm grateful for some of the creators I found through the Fandom and the ways this show shaped my creativity. That part was fun.

I always thought, because of that reason, that it was just a generic-looking symbol standing for medical care and that anyone was free to use it on their characters who work in the medical field in their books, comics, album covers or animated TV shows with no kind of legal issues at all.

What's weird about the Alicorn thing is that it suggests Ponies have a biological cycle similar to bees, where most of them will grow old and die as juveniles and only a few will receive the necessary conditioning to actually reach adulthood. Like, Twilight KEEPS GROWING, the other ponies are clearly just little baby horses. I guess what I'm saying is you probably become an Alicorn when another Alicorn vomits royal jelly into your mandibles.

Bees: only a minority of bee larvae can become queens and must be fed royal jelly as a larva to actually become one Axolotl: will lose gills and develop lungs if water slowly gets shallower or lowers in quality Ants: worker (no wings) and royal ants (have wings) are biologically different since birth and nothing can change that. King ants die after mating. Young queens lose their wings after mating and dig down to make a nest and can only give birth to workers only. Old Queen ants give birth to either workers or royals but not both depending on season. Termites: basically like ants but queens become gigantic egg laying machine to the point they cant move and all her needs have to be done by her workers.

I think your missing why people were upset at Derpy. Which I actually was too until very recently. They weren't upset that her having a disability was bad, the concern was by parents of disabled children that her first introduction included her messing everything up and being told off. Which yeah, honestly as a disabled person who was upset when they fixed her as a child, I actually agree that that was not an ok way to instantly portray her. However the solution to that being to just remove her disabled traits entirely also wasn't a good solution either. It was really as simple as writing her into one more episode where she's instead something positive, and yet they somehow decided not to do that.

Back when I was a teacher and summer camp supervisor, I started to notice that a lot of young girls loved everything that the bronies and adult fans absolutely hated when it came to the new writing/direction in the show, especially the high school movies. I remember some of the pre-teen kids at camp, especially the girls, would tell me how those movies released right around the time they were starting to feel too old for my little pony but didn't want to grow up just yet and how much they related with the high school drama/slice of life themes and how those films actually helped them make their transition from middle school/high school a lot easier. While it was clearly a marketing tactic to sell more merchandise for the show, I'm glad those girls got to have something from their childhoods continue to resonate with them as they grew older. Plus the songs were catchy as hell, I still have one or two stuck in my head from just that one year of working at that camp because they always requested Equestria Girls for movie night🤣

It’s funny because I started watching the show when I was in fourth grade, just after the release of the third season, I believe. I was a massive fan- die hard. I had merch, toys, books, movies, pillow cases, you name it. But I hated the direction to show room after Lauren Faust stepped down completely (season four onwards). I enjoyed the first two high school movies, especially the second with it’s rock music, but none after that. At that point I was in my second half of middle school, so you could argue that I was just getting too old for the series, however, many in my life believed I was too old for it to start. I just think the writing went in a different direction that certainly didn’t agree with me, but I’m glad some other young girls appreciated the changes made.

For those curious: Izzzyzzz might not have covered the Rainbow Dash Jar, but if you're curious, Whang! not only covered this infamous incident but also interviewed the responsible for that atrocity. Good luck!

Magical mystery cure aired on my 12th birthday, I considered myself a brony and I was one of the people who was not excited for alicorn twilight, but the second she revealed her wings my heart exploded. I was ecstatic and I didn’t care what anyone said. I remember that day like it was yesterday ☺️

So my original take on Derpy was that her strange voice was because she was also deaf, which explains why she has so much trouble with directions; she has to read lips, and has to do it with a visual impairment.

The Canterlot Wedding might've been a marketing stunt but hey I was like 9 and Cadance was instantly my favourite princess, I had the big singing toy of her in her wedding dress as well as the wedding themed canterlot castle so I mean it definitely worked

42:35 As someone who had (and still has) direct access to these files, I can confirm 100% that leaked DHX assets were used in the production of Double Rainboom. I was one of the first people to ever get their hands on the leaked DHX rigs. The DHX files were given to me in March 2013, a few days before Double Rainboom aired. The person who gave me the DHX rigs was a guy called RobBob, who wrote and directed several popular fan animations, the most popular of which were Epic Cupcake Time, Epic Pie Time, and Epic Wub Time. He was working on a new project called Epic Rage Time, for which I would be the lead animator. It turned out his usual animator (The same guy who made "Save Derpy" seen at 15:00) was unavailable. I worked on Epic Rage Time for several months. I did not know that I was using leaked DHX rigs at first, as I was simply given a file called 'Puppets.fla' and told not to share it with anyone. My suspicions began when I discovered character concept art hidden within the Library of the Puppets.fla file with the names of certain well-known DHX staff attached to them. My suspicions were confirmed on June 11th 2013 when someone leaked a modified version of the Puppets.fla file to 4chan, claiming that they were indeed DHX leaks. The version posted to 4chan had been modified slightly from my own, as several hidden assets from the Library were moved to the stage, and the 'Date Modified' had been updated to sometime in 2013. (The 'Date Modified' for my copy of the file dates back to September 9th 2012, for comparison). Several days after the files were leaked on 4chan, I received an urgent Skype call from RobBob. He confirmed that the files were actually from DHX, and he explained how the files became compromised (TL;DR - someone from another fan project had left them in an unsecure Dropbox folder). He instructed me to keep quiet and play dumb if anyone ever asked me about the files, because he feared that one of his friends (a well-known storyboard artist) could lose her job at DHX. It honestly seemed pretty scary back then, especially for me being fresh out of highschool in New Zealand at the time. In the end, there was no legal action, and that certain storyboard artist got to keep her job. Now... the assets for Double Rainboom project were publicly available for a long time. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Zachary Rich just posted them right to DeviantArt for people to play with. I downloaded those Double Rainboom files back then, and I still have access to them today. There's nothing suspicious about the Mare rigs, but the same cannot be said for the Stallion rigs. One look at the Lipsync symbol (i.e. the mouth shapes used for animating speech) reveals everything. I have both the DHX files and the Double Rainboom files open on my computer right now for comparison. Let me list a few similarities that go beyond what you'd expect from simply referencing or even tracing over the show. - The mouth assets are visually identical. - The number of vector points (and their placement) is identical. - The mouth assets are presented in the exact same order. - Arbitrary values like scale, rotation, and translation are identical between files. - The asset structure (i.e. how shapes are broken up into layers) is identical. - Hidden and overlapping shapes align perfectly when viewed in wireframe mode. - Identical layer names are used. - Identical layer colors are used. - Identical frame labels and comments can be found in both files. I hope this info is enough to substantiate the 'unsubstantiated' claims. I also hope the fact that I am a primary source (rather than an anonymous source) helps a bit too, lol.
