Күн бұрын

Coach Nick studied the film to determine the exact moment the long, slow comeback for the Rockets began, saving them from elimination and giving them a home Game 7 on Sunday. Hint: Lots of Brewer and Josh Smith goodness, some Blake Griffin defensive issues.

When Josh Smith hits 3 straight threes, including one step back with a hand right in his face, you know the basketball gods were completely on the Rocket's side.

This game pretty much showed that every team in this league lives and dies by the jumper. It's a make or miss league. When Josh Smith is hitting 3's, a 20 point lead is nothing.

vince3139 Yup. When the warriors are making threes, the warriors torch the grizzles, in both game 2 and 3 of warriors against grizzles, the warriors shot 6/26 and lost both of them
@CainBeezle

vince3139 hou usually doesnt take traditional jumpers, only 3s. as a part of moreyball, but mchale told them to shoot the jumper in this series because lac defended the perimeter well and the rockets are a horrible shooting team. to compensate, they take more attempts and preserve the clock as much as possible. aside from the 3, they focus on transition scoring, free throws and paint shots. lac is the opposite, great shooting percentage and fewer attempts, they shoot from everywhere and are big in the paint. the change was starting josh smith to guard blake in games 5 and 6. smith is more experienced as a stretch than jones. also, if you watched all the rockets games in the regular season, you would know that this is their usual method of winning when dwight was out.

+Ron Mexico - Solid underrated point about the drop off from Blake/Deandre and Baby/Hawes.. Doc's mismanagement of their cap made them thin on the bench meaning there was no flexibility on the roster if they wanted to turn to someone else for a spark or to give Blake rest. On the other side of the ball - Houston came back with a roster of almost entirely bench players.

Josh Smith is on the ultimate redemption tour right now. Played very well in the Dallas series, and while he's struggled against the Clippers, putting him into the starting lineup seemed to help both him and TJones, who was moved to the bench. Not to mention that Smith and Brewer saved the Rockets' season for at least another game.

@jreel
@jreel 9 жыл бұрын
Yep Coach Nick you pretty much had the same thinking I did. Blake Griffin was clearly exhausted and the Clippers lost serious composure. Guys started becoming desperate trying to isolate and in the event bad decisions were made. The Rockets just hit a serious hot streak and the momentum was in their favor the entire 4th quarter. It does not help the Clippers bench is underperforming.

Nice breakdown. Coach, one major coaching blunder that was brought up during the game is when the Rockets called timeout in the backcourt at the 3:59 in the 4th quarter. The Clippers did not press the Rockets after the timeout with only 2 seconds to cross half court. I wonder if the Clippers coaching staff was just not aware of this situation.

BBALLBREAKDOWN Yes contact on the top where Smith block the shoot. When Tim Duncan got a game wining block on James Harden the league determine that because Duncan touch the ball before James arm the block is good and the contact after is incidental. If we go by your criteria DJ probably pick 6 fouls by the 3rd quarter.

@ThaBBang
@ThaBBang 9 жыл бұрын
jerrybronham Smith and Brewer, both sub-par 3pt shooters, practiced shooting 3s ever since they joined the Rockets so that they could fit into their offense. That's hard work, and their catching fire is a result of that hard work. Also, don't forget the defensive effort the team showed as a whole against offensive superstars in cp3 and Blake.
@jerrybronham
@jerrybronham 9 жыл бұрын
Emile Warot and their lackluster 3 point shooting as a result of their technically flawed jumpers didnt do squat against the Warriors. My point is proven that what they did wasn't sustainable.
@ThaBBang
@ThaBBang 9 жыл бұрын
Wait, what? Then by your logic, what the Warriors were doing wasn't sustainable either, since they relied on technically flawed, inconsistent 3pt and free-throw shooters (Barnes, Barbosa, Green, Iguodala, Speights, etc) all season. They won the championship and got a 67-15 record. So to say that this style of play isn't sustainable is a joke, since they sustained their play throughout the entire season. Also, you can't just look at a few games (the Clippers and Warriors series) and arbitrarily decide that the Rockets' style of play is "unsustainable"... You seem to forget they finished 2nd in the *Western Conference* and have not had a losing season record since they started playing this 3pt oriented, analytics basketball a few years ago--the definition of sustainability. Just because the Rockets lost in the conference finals to one of the best teams in the history of the NBA doesn't make their style of play unsustainable... I don't know what you're talking about.

I knew the Clippers were silently screwed the moment they responded to Houston's run by being stagnant as hell. The fact they were playing hot potato with the ball also meant Houston wasn't afraid and has the rest of the Clipper players on the floor on tilt. Also amazed how it took Rivers until 3 minutes until end of regulation to try salvaging and slowing things down. Considering the Rockets were mounting the comeback at around 9-10 minutes at the 4th quarter while the Clippers were settling for bricked jumpers and rushed shots. A meltdown was happening with the Clippers while the Rockets were taking off.

The Cavs/Bulls was great just because as sloppy as both teams were, it came down to the wire in the recent games until the one where Cleveland just put down the Bulls who didn't have the fight anymore. Even the Hawks/Wizards series seems pretty hype with close finishes.

I never understood why Harden was such a leading front runner for MVP when he is a liability in defence for his team. During the regular season, his team was able to hold opponents to less point while he was on the bench. Harden was the only top 5 MVP candidate to have a negative rating for his team in defence. This game 6 highlighted how much better in "d" the rockets are without Harden. Thats what made a guy like Michael Jordan special he was excellent on both sides of the court, Anthony Davis is on his way also.

Hey Coach, did you see similarities in this 4th quarter for Blake Griffin as game 5 against the Spurs? Although obviously this was exaggerated by blowing a massive lead. Seems like he's just played too many consecutive 40+ minute games with only one days rest and couldn't maintain focus? Maybe worth giving him earlier rest like in game 6 vs the spurs? Or possibly the extra days rest will help?

Miltonman100 Its just one of Doc's weaknesses where he overlooks the little things. Even happened during his time with the Celtics. Were Spurs fans calling for Popp's head when the Spurs had the 2013 Finals at game 6 in Miami except for the meltdown with 1 minute remaining and all they had to do was not let the Lebron and the Heat tie the game? But we'll see if this game 6 ensures the Rockets will surpass the Clippers.

As a Celtics fan, I can't help but feel serious deja vu right now. Doc Rivers blew a pivotal game in the Staples Center and he may have lost all momentum in the series because of it. Why does that sound so familiar?

wow it's amazing that blake's on 80% of the defensive breakdowns in this clip. unless he was injured, there's no excuse in playing this kind of defense in a close out game when they had the game in the bag. doc should really chew him out during their video session. missing layups and passing up wide open shots, i can understand, but not playing defense is just stupid

watching this breakdown really illustrates how certain players could be willing to throw games, and certain refs could be willing to make bad calls so that game 7 can happen. probably wouldn't be hard to payoff anyone involved with some of the advertisement revenue from a game 7. not saying it's happening for sure, but there are 5 or 6 reeeally strange plays/calls in this breakdown.

It's amzing that the Clippers took the Spurs out and now the Clippers are having a hard time with the Rockets. I guess it's more about matchups. By the way, that was good that you showed DeAndre Jordan not getting back on defense. It's that kind of stuff that would drive me crazy if I were a NBA coach. Actually I think I would do like the Spurs coach does and bench guys if they're being lazy. Corey Brewer's hitting 3's? Josh Smith? Who would of thought? Good breakdown. Can't wait for game 7

Clippers are just overrated. Plain and simple. They've been hyped up since Paul got there and it's been what? 5 seasons since he came there and they still haven't even made it to the conference finals. Four straight years in the playoffs and not one time have they advanced to the conference finals. Of the West teams that have made it to at least 3 straight playoff appearances and who have made it past the first round, the Clippers are the only team that have yet to get to the conf finals. The Warriors, Rockets, Spurs, Grizzlies, and Thunder have all made it to at least the conf finals. With 3 making it to the finals and 2 winning the title. Yet, EVERY SINGLE YEAR the Clippers are hyped up as a title contender and both Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are called MVP candidates and every single year, they manage to choke in the playoffs. Every single year. How are you up 3-1 in the second round with a chance to close out at home in the biggest game in franchise history and you blow it and allow the other team to come back and win with their best player on the bench for all of it? I don't understand how they have managed to be called title contenders every season since 2012 and they still haven't advanced past the 2nd round. The Grizzlies don't even get that respect and they've made it to the playoffs every year since 2011 and are only a consistent scoring threat away and health away from getting to the Finals and maybe winning it. They've achieved more than the Clippers have yet, they are never mentioned as a title contender. Only a team that no one wants to play in the playoffs.

Tim Stanton I can't answer for everyone else who doesn't like him, but the reason I don't like Dwight is that he is a total prima donna, and seems to completely lack the work ethic and/or competitive fire to reach his full potential. Don't get me wrong, he's an athletic freak, and I'm sure he worked hard to get that way, but we are talking about a guy who has been in the league for over 10 years and still can't post up or shoot free throws. Seriously, how can you play basketball all of your life and not be able to do these very basic things??? There is no excuse for it, it's just pure laziness.

I not really a big Clippers fan, and I really don't like blaming the refs for loses, however, I can't help but feel that there have been some really questionable calls here recently. A lot of really obvious fouls on the Rockets went uncalled or were called against the Clippers, and there were some similar calls going against the Warriors tonight as well. I can't help but think that maybe the refs are being told to try and extend the series so the NBA can make more money.

I can't stress the frustration I have against Blake's poor defense.... I truly believe this is something the overrated Doc Rivers needs to work on BUT will fail to see.
