It’s ring of the hawk season four the show where we watch back a wrestlers short run with a company and then grade it. I previously made a tribute to the sad passing of Daffney who was a real trail blazer. It turns out she qualifies for ring of the hawk for both her tna and wcw runs. Although it’s just tna we’re focusing on today! I also touched on something else during that tribute video. Evidence came to light that a certain wresting hero was largely responsible for persuading Daffney to do the spot which would end up leading to the end of her life. And now I will discuss this!

I really like watching Daffney cause i thought she was so interesting and i wanted her to succeed. That spot she took through the barbed wire table was nasty as hell and even at the time i felt really uncomfortable looking at her on the floor screaming in true pain and it disgusts me even more to hear so many people in the back pushed for her to do these dangerous spots while the company would not pay for her medical bills in anyway. I think Daffney should be a case in all of the wrestling world where pressure to do things this dangerous can cause life altering events. She was a person who took so many nasty bumps and felt like she couldnt say no. Everyone at the time should be held accountable. She deserved better

Probably because Russo was there, and as we all remember in then WWF women's roster was 99% blonde bimbos which tickled he and Macmahon's pickles. I mean VinnieMac being completely baffled as to why anyone would find Asian women attractive (in regards to Gail Kim's push) is all I need to know what a basic boomer he truly is (probably making some remarks about railroads too). Anyway Russo, although I wont be one of those marks who'll call him a "murderer" over this (or Owen Heart, like a certain mortal enemy of his does) he'll always be a guido putz in my eyes. Of course he'll never let his precious blonde glorified Maxim models get so much a tiny scar, and persuade the "crazy goth chick" to go out and make his harem look good (even though the fans clearly liked Daffney far more cause she actually stood out).

Daffney had more talent than she was ever allowed to show in TNA. They used her to make Taylor Wilde and other flavours of the month look better than they were, then when they finally started giving her matches with the likes of Tara they never gave them enough time to actually tell a story in the ring. That feud could have been amazing and it did have it's moments but it could have been so much more. Then to put her in the ring with a barely trained "wrestler", which I believe was as a favour to The Dudley Boyz who had supposedly "trained" Rosie Lottalove, that was a huge insult. TNA should have taken responsibility for putting her through all of that and covered her medical expenses. It's not like Dixie Carter was short of cash. Daffney should have had a Hall Of Fame career, and I believe she did just that on the indies in between WCW and TNA, but she never got to shine like the star she was meant to be on the main stage. By all accounts, she was a lovely person behind the scenes who just wanted to put on the best matches possible. I remember following her KZbin vlog where she talked about her depression and how she was trying this experimental treatment, I always thought she would come through it but I think the damage was done. More blood on the hands of Vince Russo and co. RIP Daffney.

This is the first time I've ever heard something bad about Mick Foley. It's a shame if he encouraged her, it's specially bad because he knew very well the toll the hardcore stuff takes on the body. I guess TNA just felt no shame or guilt in treating her as they did because she was so over from her character work, promos and mannerisms that she didn't have to win matches to get a reaction - and because she was popular, it was perceived as easy to get heat for beating her up. As a result, TNA didn't care about protecting her, meaning both literally and booking-wise, and it showed. Yea, she was always the one that took the crazy bumps, but after a couple of them she really didn't need to take more, or so many so regularly. She didn't need them to be over. Hell, she didn't need them to GET over. Stuff like the Hamada match saw her taking bumps and being Daffney the hardcore crazy woman but without the same danger or the unnecessary stuff. Idunno. In-ring she was never all that strong but she never needed to be in the era she arrived. She 'got' wrestling more than most of the women the company had on the roster, because she was always over with the crowds and they were willing to follow her even despite her appalling win-loss record (and it wasn't like they were booking her as getting screwed over or anything either) and she always got a reaction going way back to her WCW days with Crowbar and David Flair. But it seemed like they wanted her to be some kind of women's version of Spike Dudley, for her whole character to be crazy bumps and somebody small enough for everybody else to throw around. Maybe if they'd done more of that but letting the likes of Kong and Tara do the bumps with her in a controlled, worked way rather than pushing her down the route of working Abyss and Raven and co in hardcore matches it would have been different. But I guess with Russo booking and with all those ECW alumni and a load of people in the backroom who clearly loved those ECW days but didn't really fully understand what got those shows, angles and wrestlers over and just thought hardcore bumps = ratings and what worked in 1997 would still work 12 years later in a much different world, it was a cheap and easy way to get attention. Well, in the light of her mental and physical decline resulting from these bumps and her eventual death, they may have got some attention, but it wasn't the attention they would ever have wanted, and nor should it have been.

This was what turned me sour on "hardcore" wrestling entirely. When done well its fine but when you pressure someone like Daffney to do stuff like that, you end up with a tragedy like this, and she is FAR from the only one. I love all of her looks over the matches here and what I've seen in WCW. You can tell she got it, playing a character and entrance, expressions etc. - - she takes over a lot of the promos/inserts you showed. Good selling, seemed competent in the ring, a nice contrast from most in that era. I can see why she was a good fit for alternatives like late WCW and TNA or ROH rather than WWE but would she be more protected in-ring if she went there? Seeing her vs all-American girl Taylor Wilde and the BP proves how refreshing she must have been. I feel bad that for all she did she was just a character bumper to them and wasn't given meaningful wins or stories. RIP to her, she goes into the underrated category for me with probably a lot more to offer if she could have been treated right.

I understand why you were hesitant about posting the video but I'm glad you did in the end. I grew up watching daffney on wcw where she didn't wrestle at all and the fact that wrestling contributed to her death is really sad and pisses me off. I was devastated when I heard the news about her suicide.

It's hilarious (in a horrible way) how nobody in wrestling ever seems to learn any lessons. Foley ended up way more broken down than he should have taking ridiculous bumps and chair shots and then encouraged Daffney to do the same thing. Even if you like hardcore wrestling nobody should be taking these kind of hits like that so frequently and especially if they don't feel ready or well trained enough.

I didn't watch a ton of TNA in its golden years, but she was definitely one of the things that stood out. Mostly cause I found her attractive, but looking back it's sad she was just used as a crash test dummy for them.

Shirley Mason was the psychiatric patient whose life was portrayed in the 1973 book Sybil. The book and subsequent film caused an enormous spike in reported cases of multiple personality disorder. Mason later admitted she had faked her multiple personalities. Given Vince Russo's age he was most likely a teen when the miniseries aired.

This is so, so sad to watch. It's like you get to watch Daffney go from a completely untrained, non-worker (as she was in WCW) to an increasingly competent wrestler (and what a bumping machine!), all the while simultaneously watching her brain become more and more damaged -- and by the time she became very good in the ring, her brain was so injured she couldn't do it anymore. I used to talk to Shannon (Daffney) on Skype pretty often in the year or two leading up to her passing. She was sooo funny and nice. She loved sci-fi and horror, loved her pets and LOVED wrestling. She was actually going to help train (via Zoom mentoring sessions) my girlfriend who was training to get into the business during the pandemic and was so excited to do that, but by the time she started her training in summer 2021, Shannon was already in a really bad place and we weren't able to get it arranged. I and can confirm there was a deep, persistent sadness in her that she was no longer able to do the thing she loved so very much. There's probably an alternate timeline out there where Daffney didn't get hurt and she's in AEW now, happily managing Julia Hart or some other 'dark, creepy' gimmick. I wish we lived in that timeline. Damn Russo, damn Taylor, damn Foley and damn TNA for this. Shannon deserved so much better.

I read somewhere after the match with Rosie LotofLove, Bully Ray (who trained Rosie) gave Daffney attitude after she mentioned she was injured by her. In all fairness to Rosie, it’s not entirely her fault because she was STILL green and she shouldn’t have been pushed to wrestle but she ultimately did contribute to Daffneys injuries. While I understand that it may have looked bad for Bully considering he trained Rosie, it was still an unjustified response to give the injured person mess for it. It also cemented my gut feeling to why I never gravitated or liked Bully Ray to begin with. Edit: just realized you mentioned it.

$600 dollars for all that damage she took?! TNA has done some bullshit in the past and knowing Russo was involved is not a surprise but what the hell TNA? Daffney did so much for the company and deserves to be remembered with other pillars of the company like AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe and the Motor City Machine Guns. Hell, she was a pioneer for women wrestlers because she showed women could do such matches and spots that just wasn't really done before. RIP Daffney. Gone too soon but never forgotten.

I usually enjoy your videos but this one was really hard to watch. Outside of Sting, she was one of my favorite wrestlers in TNA with one of my favorite TNA themes. I remember being absolutely frustrated with her booking. Then her getting hurt and leaving wrestling was pretty hard to watch. I followed her on Twitter for a long time. Always enjoyed interacting with her. Seeing her final days before she passed was gut punching. As someone who had my own battles with suicide and depression, it hit me hard. God speed to Daffney and to her family.

What a loss the world suffered when Daffney passed. It’s a shame that she didn’t know how loved she was by the world. TNA is partially to blame as well. They shouldn’t have allowed her to do 50% of the things she did. They played a big part in this tragedy. Btw, Cybil was a female character in a film that was crazy. I assume that’s what they meant. I hope Daffney is resting peacefully and is cackling wherever she is. R.I.P. you legend.

I wish people\wrestlers learned anything from tragedies like this... instead we hear a lot of people throwing shade at unnamed wrestlers when they try to dissuade the Jungle Jacks of this world when they want to take crazy bumps through glass to go over on Starurday morning. (it's not the same situation but I wish there was less bias against people who want to work smart rather then hard when their body is on the line). Chris Kanyon is another example, crazy talented, crazy bumper, ended in tragedy.

Man, that was sad. I didn't know anything about this. I want to thank you for bringing it to me and hopefully thousands of others too. Do you think Wrestlers will ever get a union? I don't follow much of the newer content. It's just not cool to see these mortals, going through things the "real" Superman, or Girl would think twice about!! When I was a kid, in the 80's,I knew pretty quickly that things were predetermined. I stopped watching in the early 90's and like so many others, I returned for the attitude era. That left me thinking, since it's predetermined, it must be safe too. With documentaries, books and deaths, the mid to later part of the 2000's were just a Nightmare, with so many Deaths. It seems like the bell curve is on it's way up again. I really hope not. Cheers for the content. After Brian Zane, you'r content is my favorite on the net. Take Care.
