Wild male Capercaillie rarely rape hens, who gather (sometimes in groups of more than 10 individuals) at the display grounds of usually solitary favored males for mating. The extreme aggressiveness of breeding male Capercaillie increases survivorship among their offspring as well as that of incubating and parental females by making breeding males attack potential predators, which they either drive off or fall victim to in lieu of the much less conspicuous hens and their chicks. It also skews survivorship in favor of hens. This hybrid male is attracted to lek aggregations of the socially displaying male Black Grouse, but is also as aggressive towards male Black Grouse as male Capercaillie are towards adult rivals of their own relatively asocial species, which does not usually tolerate close proximity of displaying males.

Renowned wildlife artist John James Audubon observed tom Wild Turkeys mounting and mating with rivals that they had killed in fights. Robert Scott, leader of the Terra Nova Expedition in Antarctica, was horrified to repeatedly observe male Adelie Penguins mating with the frozen corpses of colony mates who had died in approximations of the crouching posture of soliciting female Adelie Penguins. These birds had not been killed in fights; most died during storms.

I can't help but wonder if the social alienation from the other birds plays a part. In humans, our worst behaviours are usually cultivated by ostracism. It creates a sort of generalized misanthropy and distrust, and sometimes predatory tendencies. Maybe this doesn't require a primate brain to occur.

No, Capercaillies are kill-fuck machines. It inevitably got this from the Caper half. Have you SEEN what capers do? They'll mate with and try to kill you too. They're 100% bite, 0% brain. I am interested - SO THIS IS THE CROSS BREED (actually I have never heard that it is possible to cross breed between woodengouse and blackgouse) BETWEEN THOSE SPECIES, BUT HOW ABOUT THE PUREBLOODED WOODENGROUSE ? DOES HE ATTACK THE PURE BLACKGROUSE ALSO ? OR IS IT ONLY IN CASE OF CROSS BREEDS INDIVIDUALS that are so aggressive ? as we can see it in the video
@LaurenticAspie
@LaurenticAspie 3 жыл бұрын
The parent species prefer different breedings grounds, with wood grouse preferring forests or their immediate vicinities and black grouse preferring open fields (as shown here). Since most rackelwilds are fathered by black grouses, they have a greater tendency to join the latter in their competition. As for the aggression - well, we do know that at least wood grouse cocks have a serious overload of testosterone when in heat, and, in the absense of hens, will physically intimidate and assault anything that moves and even go after fleeing targets. (As many Finnish "hullu metso" videos as well as those in other languages here in YT demonstrate.) Black grouse cocks show off more than they fight, but the males of most polygynous bird species have at least a hidden capacity for aggression. The males of both parent species also rely on the quality of their very specific mating calls and gestures to advertise their fitness to females in order to minimize mutually destructive fights beforehand, but the hybrid's postures stick out too much and his call is an alien grunt unattractive to hens of either parent species (in the wild at least). So I guess the one in the video gets frustrated and cracks up.

@@LaurenticAspie Studies of communally displaying lek grouse indicate that the location of a male's display territory within the lek area may sometimes be the single most important factor in their selection by females. Here in North America, male Sage Grouse, Greater Prairie Chickens, and Sharp Tailed Grouse, have the most success in mating if their territories are in the center of the lek area. This does not rule out the possibility that these very successful males may simply be able to claim territories away from positions in the periphery that are most vulnerable to predators simply because of their status in the lek hierarchy.

The aggressive behavior is pure hormone rage. The poor Wood Grouse is turning around expecting to shadow box one of their own. Instead they are met with the equivalent of Mike Tyson in the Rackelwild male. Then the ending. Mating with a dead bird is not that unusual. Just check out penguins like the Adélie. Male turkeys have also been known to hump a bird corpse too. They are not picky.

😳 In the US there are two species of grouse that live peacefully together but do not interbreed. Mainly because one species must sing to attract females while the other must dance to attract females. The mating rules are clear. But occasionally the two types do accidentally breed. Unfortunately this results in male offspring that do a bizarre whacky & nonsensical hybrid song & dance mating routine that confuses & terrifies BOTH species's females. The hens run away from these males in fear & horror. \🤪/?! And these poor mixed-up males end up alone in exile as frustrated life-long bachelors. Often they're seen running around & around in little circles all by themselves - dance stomp squawk squawk! Dance stomp squawk squawk! While the other grouse watch from a safe distance & just stare...

You mean the hybrids? Or the pure blooded capercaillie/wood grouse? The pure blooded capercaillies fight among themselves like this. They're all large, strong and aggressive birds, who have impressive boxing matches among themselves. It's not murder, but an even battle with both combatants having a chance. Meanwhile, the black grouse are much smaller, more delicate and less aggressive, and don't get their "hands" on each other. This capercaillie x black grouse hybrid here is too small to fight a pure blooded capercaillie, but too large and too aggressive for the poor black grouse to handle. It really shouldn't be on this arena at all. But it won't find success among the capercaillies either. It's an unfortunate and messed up situation, but it's not the fault of the capercaillies.
