My name is Nick Mayo, I am a Michigan based film photographer and creative sharing my triumphs and struggles within the world of art and photography. I have a great number of videos lined up for sharing different things I've learned along the way in my creative journey, as well as some interviews with other creatives and influencers about their joys and struggles within the industry.

Finally getting to watch this video, and I definitely spent 9 out of 10 minutes coping with the awesome fact that you were an actual magician. Not surprised, as your photography is magical. But man, Mayo’s Magical Manual Camera sounds like an autobiography if I’ve ever heard one.

I've pretty much tried every art form, and some have stuck longer than others, but they all converge and influence each other. Even something that isn't visual can influence something like photography. The way that a section of writing describes a setting is often how I shoot. Establishing a place, and then details within that space. Studying and reading comics has really made me understand leading lines and structuring an image around how you want someone's eyes to move through it. There are so many more examples of art influencing other art of wildly different mediums. Funnily enough I get more inspiration away from photography than I do within it.

Mystic Fish Studio I tend to agree with that last statement. I definitely get inspired by photos, but it’s when I walk away from it all and experience other areas of life that I actually find the most inspiration, breakthrough and curiosity. It all plays into each other! Thanks so much for sharing. I love hearing that about comics and such. Very cool pedigree you have there!

Super interesting topic Nick. I notice that also stay concius in the moment help me to move forward and know better my vision. What I was always interested in, is how the concept of learning jazz improvisation can be related to photography. The best way of learning improvisation is to transcabie other solo from the masters and play it, understand the relationship to the harmony so you can play similar phrase in a similar harmonic structure, so basically copy and slight modify the masters and in this process you find your voice select what you are interesting in to start to transcribe and study is part of find your vision, because it's hard that all want to transcabie the same phrase from a solo. I'm only 16, so I haven't had too many experiences. My surroundings really influence my photography whether it's wildlife or rustic objects. Just this weekend I went and took pictures of what I was most interested in as a little kid, nature. Particularly the little things most people might not have noticed. It was pure joy to doamd a nice trip before school starts. I'm going to miss TMT but I'm looking forward to what you have planned for the rebrand. P.S. I'm from Missouri!

Brendon, I wouldn't undersell your age and circumstance. You have a unique set of experiences and have a freedom and outlook on life that all of us 30 year olds are chasing and trying to remember. Use that to your advantage to create awe-inspiring work. When we take a photograph, not only are we capturing a moment in time of the external world around us but we're also freezing a moment in time and a state of being in ourselves. I think it's awesome that you get to grow and watch your creative pedigree evolve as you get older and photograph the things that you find interesting and that are important to you!

Hey Brendon! Like Peter has said, don’t discount your age. They actually say that about 60 percent of how we perceive the world is formulated between birth and the ages 5-8yrs old. 80% by the time we are 18. So much of your world view is formed already my friend. Now its just a discovery of what that is. I love the perspective of photographing nature in a way that most people may have not noticed. I would love to see what that looks like. If you get some posted up on Instagram please tag me in them or shoot them over in a DM. Also that’s awesome you are from Missouri! @@NickExposed I'll be posting my photos from my family trip throughout this week @mediocre_photographer1. No northeast Missouri but I was down in the Ozarks last weekend. I do think starting young like me has its advantages, one being a childlike fascination with the world. I have so many experiences to look forward to and take advantage of with my photography.

I think this was a really interesting last TMT. And I can truly relate to this. Everything I've been through and continue to go through really does have a huge impact on my photography work, especially with my chronic illness and mental health struggles they come out in my work all the time. Seeing my life and what I'm going through being portrayed through my images can truly help me on another level.

This is exactly what you go through when you go to a creative/art school, looking back to move forward.. I have a past in drawing and painting, it was how I learned to see light as my parents put me in after school art classes from I was 7-14 years old ;) and I never thought of merging my photography with that or look at what I was intersted in drawing on how that come out in my photography as well :)

Fie, I think you are a shining example of what it looks like for someone to not only dive into their past to find the influences, but also to embrace it with their current workflow. I think your recent work over the past year of combining your drawings with your photos is the best work Ive seen from you yet. It has a slice of you in each and every piece, in a way that many other works I see from people do not. I hope you continue to press into not only drawing, but other areas of your “pedigree” to see where those are already influencing your work, but also where they might take you if you embrace them even more. Niiiick, I can't take all that praise haha ;) thank you tho, that means a lot to me.. Yeah its "just" about keep asking questions and I'm questioning my home country feelings, why I have the need to "run away", trying to figure out where all this dairyfarming I've been doing in the past comes in, in other aspects then in the nature I tend to use. Trying to stay just a little focused which is sooo hard after having been so privileged to have a year of focus ;)

The praise is well deserved Fie, seriously the work has been great. And that so interesting. I am very curious to hear how the journey into understanding the desire to run away turns out. That will probably lead to not only some great creative expression, but also some potential moments of healing. If that makes sense. Let me know how it all turns out. I am very curious to hear.

Thanks for yet another Great video👍I use to draw and paint a lot too starting in my early childhood, I went to artschool later graphic/drawing/painting etc for some months just the basics, went to tecnical College for awhile after that again graphics. I used to be a lot in nature and my grandfathers woods and I find myself going back to nature and woods again and again and searching for nature in the City too.

Thanks for sharing too Well I have always somehow been aware of the influence from my childhood in my art and photo, I feel conectet with my grandfather in that way when walking in the woods. The Classic field in drawing etc in artschool and art classes later is always there in the way I think composition etc. Like you I think the film specially black and white stems from the graphite, the black and white drawings I used to do a lot. I am also drawn towards shapes and graphic elements but I seek more to nature than the cities.

Totally makes sense. Especially the compositional side of things. That’s one of the biggest draws from my graphic design work. Building the compositions the same way I would a design. So building a composition the way you might draw or paint is great. Ive been researching a ton of Pictorial Composition techniques as of the last 6-8 months. Bringing in more painterly elements of directing the eye and giving tone and value to contain the eye has really helped in shifting my work moving forward now. Adding in another artistic element to the pedigree as we go. Haha. Thanks again for sharing, my friend!! I love hearing about how all of this effects your work. Cheers

It's funny, i actually got into photography because of an whole other kind of hobby. I use to train and fight thai boxing for couple of year, and decided to go and train over in thailand. Of course i brought a camera with me. And after some time spent in the camps, i started to see beyond the toughness and the brutality of the lifes of these Thai fighter, and started to pick on small details that made me realize how loving those indivuals were to each other and how contrasty could some people be. I knew this was what i wanted to bring back and I had to find a way to "show" people. This is how it started anyway... I stumbled accross a way to share my sensibility while I was chasing my virility. Maybe an odd road, maybe not. I agree on the fact that some non-artistic related stuff can be a way bigger influence on who we are as creatives, as it is only a way to express who we are, And who we are is only a build up from all that we have been. I hear this branding argument a lot, but I think it is false. Nick wants the tail to wag the dog. Art is a journey into the unknown.

I think I understand what you mean. But I am not saying that we neglect the idea that we push forward into the unknown. But do you not agree that our previous experiences in life effect our creative and visual draw? I’m not sure where our argument is here? I would love to hear more of your thoughts on the subject :)
