It's kinda heartbreaking to think that Doug might have finally managed to escape the facility after waking up from his rest, only to find the world taken over by the Combine and realizing it's safer inside Aperture.

It's quite sad to think Rattman is aware of what happened at Black Mesa, and the significance of the Borealis to the Combine. To me, it suggests he did, at some point, leave the facility, but in foing so, became aware of what happened outside Aperture Labs.

Well i imagine the idea is that he never left. He never escaped, and through external transmissions or through his own digging and research learned everything about the borealis. Remember, the downfall of rapture takes place about a week before half life, meaning everyone was trapped and/or killed in aperture before ever learning of the combines existence. We know that obviously aperture would have some info on the ship they built, and what happened to it, so its not hard to believe that Ratman simply found information on it somewhere. My guess as to specifics; we know he knows Johnsons login and password, meaning he likely has access to all information Johnson (and likely now GLaDOS) had/has. Given that the footage we see of the borealis in half life was taken from Aperture, we know they have records of these things atleast. Im not sure what point im trying to make really, other than that ratman could have learned of the outside world's apocalypse from the "safety" of being inside the facility, rather than from first hand experience. (An argument could be made about Aperture being a significantly worse place to be, especially for someone like him, but my knowledge of halflife is not anywhere near that of portal so im quite biased)

Funny thing, the very first den I ever found was in portal 2. I hadn’t played portal one, and never heard of rattman. So when I saw the painting of chell and his ramblings it freaked me out! I then ran to show my brother and the wall SEALS BACK UP! This stuff terrified me!

To be honest I think that the audio file with ratman being crazy is to me the creepiest easter egg I have ever seen.....there's just something about it that just makes me get chills down my spine.

theory: somehow rattmann's conscience went to a core that we call "the space core" the similarity with the obsession with space could not be a coincidence.

i actually have a theory for that, spoilers for both portal games and the lab-rat comic: So maybe the reason the cores are called 'personality cores' is because some of the astronauts, war heroes or olympians were transferred into the cores. After glados was built they still had some people left from earlier tests but were either too injured or incapable of leaving so the scientists used them for the cores just kind of like how caroline was forced into Glados, at first they seemed to work fine but overtime corrupted for some reason, maybe after ratman went into statis at the end of the comics the party escort bot found ratman and uploaded him into space core, also almost every core has a name except fact core. So this implies that these cores do have consciences. That's just my theory though

@@justjohnny1333 the missing astronauts where well before cave Johnson’s death if I recall correctly which would mean it was well before GLaDOS. If it was well before GLaDOS when they were put into the cores than Cave would have become GLaDOS which we know isn’t the case.

@@Darvoth Though these aren't canon, in the portal 2 beta cave's consciousness actually did end up getting put in a core, and in portal 2 desk job cave's consciousness is inside a giant stone head AI. I think one of the lines for the perpetual testing initiative also reference something similar. In the portal 2 beta atleast we know GLADOS was completed for obvious reasons, and in Aperture Deskjob I think GLADOS exists, either way a version of a Cave AI and GLADOS existing at the same time is something several valve official projects toy with. It also would kinda fit with the dark humor of Portal to know Cave somehow was shoved into an AI whilst GLADOS was being completed, maybe even the scientists intended to replace GLADOS with the Cave core after they figured out what kept sending GLADOS insane, but because GLADOS killed everyone in the facility she never learned of this and now there's just a cave core somewhere in the facility. All this is just non-canon material however, with Aperture Deskjob being a seperate universe, and Cave core being removed from Portal 2 for story reasons since having Cave still technically being alive took away from the impact of Caroline's reveal and her story. So more than likely there is no Cave core in the main universe.

All the moon references in the dens in Portal 2 as well as the writings about exile were supposed to be hints to a secret ending in which you shoot at the moon before the Wheatley boss fight, die, and the credits use Exile Vilify instead of Want you gone. The ending was scrapped and Exile Vilify is now a song that plays on the radio in chapter 2’s Rattman den.

I imagine how he felt while living in walls of already destroyed Aperture Science facillity after realizing that Earth is no longer a safe place (and before being shot by a turrent). He was also probably sometime sented to Black Mesa before the accident (due him metioning it 2 times and even Borealis) for a reason i guess? Its terrifying to hear his ramblings but also they are so distorted that im already getting chills.

edit; CONGRATS ON 1K DUDE It honestly sounds like they recorded one word (and a few small phrases) at a time for the ghost of ratman file. The way the words follow each other sounds more like sentence splicing, like you’d hear in a TF2 SFM, more than anything else, which makes me think that they could’ve chosen this simple form of interference to signify in some way that he’s actually still living. Maybe try reversing the incomprehensible bits of the file to see what that gives? I’d love to see a longer follow-up video on this where you look at some possible ways to solve the easter egg for good, one way or the other. Great video, keep making stuff like this and you’ll get huge in no time flat.

I read somewhere, I think it was the VA of Rattmann, that the VA's been asked to read a list of complicated words in an insane/deranged tone. and then they mixed the audio and it ended up being this. he says he doesn't even remember what the words were. I don't remember where I heard this, I hope I'm not misremembering but I'm pretty sure I'm right

"the ship is stolen!" this is obviosuly the borealis from the half life series, we know portal and half life collide, and the borealis was a shipt of aperture science. also, he says "Mesa", could perhaps be Black Mesa.
