@whitedragoness23 tubi has it for free. It is good, honestly. Minor bit of spoilers here. Feel free to not read but it doesn't spoil much more than Ryan's video does. The thing I found truly tragic upon completing this one is how Gavin seemed like he was half assing it in many ways at the beginning. He was more interested in turning it into a film that could catapult him to stardom than he was in actually investigating or creating an honest documentary. Part of the way through, when he loses everything, he disappears for like 2 weeks. Over the course of those two weeks, he clearly investigated a lot harder and actually found a lot of evidence proving the validity of the tapes. But it was too late.

@yetanotherrandomyoutubecha4382
@yetanotherrandomyoutubecha4382 10 ай бұрын
I actually think Lake Mungo is, in a way, one of the scariest films I've ever seen. It's essentally a film about a family finding out that their daughter knew her death was coming soon, and that she spent the last few months of her life suffering, desperate and alone, without anyone to talk to about her situation, since nobody would believe her. That, to me, is one of the realest and most terrifying concepts I've ever seen a horror film tackle. Now, the parallels to the real world issues of depression and suicide are obvious, and I know that the fact that I know people who have taken their own lives no doubt makes it scarier and sadder to me than it does to other people. Still, I respect the hell out of it for tackling such a dark issue in a really unique way, and I just kinda wanted to express why I think it's so scary, though I get it might not do the same for you. And yeah, regardless of all that "That scene" is also just really creepy
@Riddle99-v7q
@Riddle99-v7q 3 ай бұрын
@@johnsmif6615I agree with it not being that "scary" , but it's still one of my favorite films ever. It's not really meant to be a proper horror film but more of a drama about a grieving family trying to cope and a daughter tackling her demons with some horror elements.

Rewatched this movie in preparation for this video, and there's a credit for "fakelore" which I assume is the people who prepared the various articles. I think Butterfly Kisses definitely works better on a second watch, partly because a couple of the jumpscares are particularly cheap and, when you don't know the direction the movie is going in, that can seem like a bad thing, rather than part of the point - that the supposedly real found footage has way too many trappings of fake found footage for its own good. I think one of the nice things about the movie is that it does feature relatively smart people talking about the fact that, actually, no matter how many times someone says "this can't be faked", pretty much anything can be faked, and that's what would make actually encountering real found footage like this so maddening. There's definitely shades of House of Leaves to this movie - I think House of Leaves also featured the device of having people try to figure out *how* a piece of footage was faked, rather than questioning whether it was, and the basis we end up with for believing it is not "this is so amazing, no one could fake this", and more "based on the director's tax returns, we doubt he would be able to finance these special effects". It is something I think found footage movies do need to address in order to feel credible - that people are just a lot more sceptical nowadays and even holding what should be evidence in your hand isn't going to convince a lot of people.

YES!! I found this movie on a random like IMDB "movies like this" thing while looking at hell house and it quickly became one of my favorites, while a little rough around the edges at some points i think it really perfectly walks that line of mockumentary, like the documentary crew's focus on the failed horror writer instead of the specific horror while it still plays out, it feels like something you'd see on netflix (minus the ending where everything goes ary of course) its probably one of my favorite horror mockumentaries

At first I thought to myself your were going to go the auteur route and do Michael Mann’s the keep but in the frame of K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) I realized the description of the clue you gave was absolutely in the title Frankenstein’s Army. So that is my true guess. This was interesting and as usual very well done but being that I am not a fan of found footage films, with notable exceptions (.rec, the poughkeepssie tapes, etc), it was refreshing to have it defined so well on why I cannot stand this drama. Beyond the seizure inducing shots, the implausible reasons on what makes people do the dumbest shit possible, and the always jump scarre “oh we are edgy BS that one has to suspend their belief like a tightrope walker. The sheer narcissism of the main “protagonists” has always left me completely cold. From the Blair Witch to Cloverfield one thought has always hung over my head when watching most of the films i this genre, “These unlikeable POSs are getting what they deserve.” I know I am in the minority of how I feel about some of the most financially successful marketing campaigns in the history of cinema but there is precedence showing these characters are selfish trash who could have saved themselves ten times out of ten if they would have made better decisions and put the fucking cameras down. At least in the Evil Dead when they do stupid shit like read the Necronomicon or play the albums despite the clear warnings. One could infer they are being guided by the entity to do so. Hell in 2103 Evil Dead he even admits he fucked up and is the cause of all this tragedy but he is not compelled to apologize or stop it. But in movies such as these there is no compelling force except the power of fame. I really don’t think I will ever like the FF genre but at least I have you to save me from wasting anymore time watching them. Thank you for that.

I really don’t like this film… & I really enjoy the fake horror documentary types… it was very well made - it’s just the whole, ‘something happened… now you’re destined to die soon’ thing just grows old for me… just saw, HOWARDS MILL… that was good. Was a slightly unique twist tacked on.

saw the first minute of this video, paused it, watched the movie with my bf, and we might have a limited frame of reference, but we both started getting weird feelings watching the parts with gavin being, strangely un-supernatural, and how voyeuristic if felt watching this dude's life fall apart even if we felt he was a bit of an ass and just the layers of sophia and feldman's documentary, gavins process of piecing their movie together to his detriment, and then the documentary crew reminding us of the layered presentation of how house of leaves was written but a lot more straight forward

watched the movie before i got to spoilers cos the concept sounded SO far up my alley the friend i watched it with had the same critique i did, in that gavin's story would have been a lot more compelling if he had been in any way likeable. his 'descent' into being an even bigger douchebag would have felt more like a progression or development but actually watching it he just wasn't a character we cared about becoming worse. and even though we're both creatives and could tell the Peeping Tom mystery wasn't the thematic focus of the film, it was more compelling than the breakdown of someone who's side we were basically never on, so its (necessary) playing second fiddle to the 'creative struggle' plot was a bit disappointing. we're still glad we watched it though, and there were some great ideas in it. we just weren't sold on the execution - though we did appreciate it for what it is, and as something that warranted talking about for like an hour afterwards lol

I liked the movie, but the one thing I didn't like was how hard people went after the guy who found the footage and was putting it together. He took it to so many different people, showed it to directors, to video experts to a paranormal society, and they all bashed him saying it was fake. I just felt like people were far too aggressive, even if they didn't believe him, they went after him like he pissed on their grandmother's graves, I was waiting for a twist that maybe it was the Blink Man's doing, especially after what happens to him in the end.

I’ve been meaning to watch this movie since it takes place where I live! That bridge is in Ellicott City, MD (which is already haunted enough in reality) underneath the ruins of a disciple college that has been nicknamed Hell House. This and Blair Witch make me happy Maryland gets some spooky recognition

I saw this movie several years back. I actually really enjoyed it as something a little different from the typical 'found footage' narrative. I think the ultimate trick to any of the found footage movies is to simply have a good story to go with. Only those who really want to believe, or are completely gullible, will ever think what they're watching is real, but a good story can at least make you so engrossed that you forget what you're watching is fiction.

I recently watched this, after having forgotten I had watched it once before. However, it is really not unique, nor the creepiest, as there are hundreds, if not even thousands now, of similar "documentaries" in the same style, called "Found Footage". Blair witch was one of the first of that kind (although not _the_ first). I recently watched a way creepier one titled The Awnik (Available her at KZbin and worth checking out).

So I guess peeping Tom is able to split his being? I mean if the og girl is still alive perpetually staring into peeping Tom's face for the rest of her life then...he shouldn't be able to go get others right? And why would peeping Tom attack and kill the film maker if it wasn't him that summoned him, his camera did.

Thanks for recommending this one, Ryan. I watched this one a few hours ago, and really enjoyed it! As a viewer, it keeps you similarly frustrated trying to aee id you will have definitive evidence of Peeping Tom by the end (in a good way). Seeing Gavin sink deeper into madness and obsession is actually even more interesting than the central mystery.

You and the whole crew did great work! Saw it tonight. I love found footage but was expecting a... typical horror movie. Was not expecting the layers and depth of characterization. Horror some times is best as a vehicle for examining people, like everything with Gary throughout the film. Easily a favorite of mine now.

Ok so to get the demon after you, you have to stare into a tunnel in the middle of the night for a full hour. Literally no one would ever be the first to do this and find out, and no one would after. It's not like the demon brings you any benefit
