UPDATE: 12/4/2016. I am WELL aware the video is shaky. It was cold as fuck outside, snowing steadily, and I didn't have enough time to set up my tripod and camera in this weather. The Michael J Fox comment was very amusing, except for those who actually have Parkinson's. I'm sure they aren't laughing.
Enjoy this train horn, for all it's snow-clogged worth!!!
Want to see more awful sounding horns? I got em!!! Check out the most FOULED train horn EVER!!! (Pan Am #610) • WORST TRAIN HORN EVER....
Video Description For Creepy/Spooky Horn:
This horn is NO doubt clogged with TONS of snow from the blizzard (video taken on 12/26/13) but it makes this horn sound so creepy that I actually could feel my neck tingling from the sound. Enjoy this weird horn on PAR's SEPO freight!

As a engineer on the BNSF for the last 25 years I can easily explain the horn sounding different than normal.... the main reason is because of the snow falling gets inside the horn and will pack up and muffle the horn sound until it’s blown enough to clear the snow back out. This happens when in heavy snow their are no crossings to blow for a few miles and then when you do blow the horn , it’s a muted sounding horn until all the snow is blown out by frequent use again. The other reason is on some of the older Ex BN units they had 5 chime horns that I could blow with different sounds based on how I moved the horn level
@TrinityCourtStudios
@TrinityCourtStudios 6 жыл бұрын
I'll take your experienced word for it! What surprises me is that there's a mixture of quiet zones and non-quiet zones for the train to blow the horn, but others the train has to be silent. I think it was a gradual buildup as you suggested, and yet the snow was intense enough that even when there were several crossings, the train horn was too muffled by that point. This particular BN SD40-2 had a Leslie RS3K, but it sounded so muffled that it was almost completely muted.

@Alone Hades I still wake up and see black shapes in my bedroom and can't move. Even after I wake fully and can move, the dread and fear still linger. I am a grown man and former Law Enforcement Officer and have looked death in the eye in real life. But I will lay in bed after an episode and be scared to close my eyes again. Like a scared little kid. Even though I know it is just sleep paralysis. It is not fun.

O - I agree, a friend of mine told me that his psychology professor said it’s pretty much different parts of your brain trying to get their way, when you are in a deep sleep and you dream, your body is pretty much paralyzed, that’s why you don’t get up and run if you’re running in your dreams. Anyway, part of your brain is in this stage and another part of your brain wants to wake up, so eccentrically they’re battling each other for control. He said no matter what you think you see, tell yourself that you’re still asleep, this isn’t real and stop, fighting the sleep. It works for me. I realized one day that as much as I thought I was awake and looking around I wasn’t. I was napping in our recliner next to my husbands desk and I had a paralysis episode. I was looking straight at him but he wouldn’t help. When I finally woke up I asked him why, he said he hadn’t been at his desk at all, . 😳. That’s when I really realized you aren’t awake.

Being from the middle of Pennsylvania (basically railroad country) there used to be some old signals down the tracks from this walking bridge in the middle of town, sometimes you could see them go off for a few seconds in the night, it was so eerie, and being surrounded by the dark and woods on both sides as well as tracks that faded into the void of darkness made it even worse.. I kinda miss those signals tho

Thanks for the memories (fond ones, I assure you). I grew up in a small house in a small mountain town half a block from two sets of railroad tracks. Morning, noon, night. Sunshine, rain, snowstorm or other. Trains were a permanent part of our lives. When the economy was doing well, so were the train companies; when the economy wasn't, neither were the train companies. When air traffic was restricted during 9/11, the train companies did quite well. All of this, by the sound of a (train) bell. The train whistles and bells were more or less background noise to us. I was a weather buff and it got to where my father and I could begin to predict the weather by the way the whistles and bells sounded -- how clear; how muffled; how long the sound lingered; how quickly the sound ended, etc. A good ear for such sounds and a good understanding of how different types of smokes (house chimney vs. industrial vs. restaurant, etc.) rises or lays to the ground in different weather patterns can make a good boy scout. :o)

Early in our relationship, when we lived in Carrolton, TX back in late 90s in an apt. complex, just about once a week we would hear this EXACT kind of screwed-up horn blaring at 4:30am in the morning...and our apt. didn't face the railroad tracks about 1000 ft away to the west, we were on the far east side facing east...but that damn sound would reverberate off another complex, RIGHT into our bedroom and wake one or both of us up...kinda miss that.

It plays two dissonant notes. It's like hitting two adjacent keys on a piano, creating a sharp, painful warbling noise. It's intentional because it gets everyone's attention and basically tells people in no uncertain terms to get their ass outta the way.
@TrinityCourtStudios
@TrinityCourtStudios 6 жыл бұрын
The train horn was clogged with snow, which threw off the notes of the horn. The horn on this locomotive is an RS3K, so it's only a 3 chime horn. If enough snow clogs the horn, it will make the sharp and awkward noise of two adjacent notes playing without the third note to properly moderate it. The "hitting two adjacent keys on a piano" is a great analogy.
