A TP&W engineer starts the day with a locomotive inspection finding out that SD70ACe 1102 was not wanting to start up making it a hard pull for the two GEs with the HEAVY 55G grain train in Kokomo, Indiana on 2022-05-07.

Some crews used to carry welding cables on one of the locos, just for the purpose of having to do a "jump start" if the occasion presented itself.

NS SD70ACes are air start. They do have electric backup but it's disabled.
@Victor_Blane16 сағат бұрын
Yea that’s the downside of ACe’s tho. They’re Airstart locomotives, and when it has problems. They’re impossible to start
@paulsmith539814 сағат бұрын
@@thd5678 ahhhhh, yes, youre quite correct!, i have the Wabash heritage unit in HO scale, and when its powered up, the DCC air start is very audible!

@@Victor_Blane speaking of airstart locos, eons ago, the Alco C636 units were also airstart. Some guys at the local train club were talking about how many years ago, an Illinois Central crew killed all 10 of those units trying to start them. They had to call in some EMD GP units to get the air pressure built up to get one unit going, that had to be quite embarrassing!

@@paulsmith5398 I remember hearing the air start on the locomotives late at night it would wake you up out of a dead sleep.

Honestly I would have left the yard with the SD70 in the lead. Them things are stump pullers. I was lucky to run one once. Leader for loads of coal and was at track speed like it was nothing.

@@old_school_guy funny you mention that I have talked to several engineers and they have said the same thing and it’s there choice of power.
@LoganisTrainBoy14 сағат бұрын
I’ve experienced that with BNSF MAC’s and MACe’s but having to pull coal trains into the power plant with a single ACe, nothing but wheel slip and trouble. An AC/ES44 always did a better job.

@therailroadtiespiker it's been years since I've been there. I live in Florida, but I'm originally from Michigan. My mother is the one from Knox. I know they have a busy railway through there. My grandparents' house is about 100 yards from the track. I remember it would vibrate the house when a train would go by.
