This is a visual comparison of the original "The Crew" open world racing game and how it stacks up to the brand new closed beta version of "The Crew 2."
Keep in mind that because The Crew 2 is still in beta, all of this is subject to change. But it makes for an interesting conversation nonetheless.

I don't know man. I recently jumped out from TC1 to TC2 beta and game looks so much better to me. Especially lighting effects (that night tho) and draw distance. Textures from up-close are more detailed, although some models still looks too cubicle. The thing is: both TC1 and TC2 come to the same console generations, there isn't much space for improvements and that's real shame. I'm playing this game on medium PC specs (1060) on ultra with constant 60 fps (game is capped). There is so much room for better graphics, just don't expect it before next generation of consoles arrives...

This video looks really odd to me. I play both games on ultra settings 2k resolution on a PC, and the crew 2 looks way better to me, but in this video the color pallet and details both look turned down. If I've never played it my self I'd say it looks worse then the crew 1 based on this video, but in game - at least for me - it's completely different. What settings did you record theses games on? edit: Also forgot to say, you can see the entire damage model on cars in the photomode. When you crank the slider all the way up, it looks pretty good.

Not because he was payed for sure, I mean, what major publisher would bother with a 6.9k subs channel (no offence of course, uploader seems cool, I'm just being realistic). I suspect the color impacts the general feel of the game so much and the aesthetic is designed to be view with a very specific tone. The lighting also changes SOOOOO much in the look of the game, that it looks worse in the video then it does in game for Us, because of that. Perhaps my monitor's settings are adjusted to in game slightly better then to youtube or something, idk. Even the resolution of the video and game being different make it different, so just because it looks worse than the game actually does, that doesn't mean it's uploader's fault. Or I mean, maybe it is a little, but not intentional i don't think. Also, The crew 2 just looks different then the first one, so it possible to subjectively prefer one or the other. You could say for example that Fortnite or Overwatch looks shit because of how simplistic it is, but some people like the cartoonish look.

Ok so I've just played the beta for a few hours and watched this video again and I can confirm, if looks different for me then the video. Not making an accusation or anything, just stating a fact. And I can also state another fact, that the image at 1:27 of the crew 1, has a completely burned sky. I've played that game a lot and never seen a sky this white or trees this bright. So the image was either altered or your settings are different to mine. Again, I'm not saying there's a conspiracy going on, just that it looks wrong, for what ever reason. + the color of the paint is the same, but I think it might a different varnish type. Reflections on cars stand out more in the crew 2... At least when I play it.

Odd cause personally i think the second game looks a lot better. It's possible that some areas were down graded due to the added water detail (cause boats and water racing plays a big deal now) and to increase the draw distances when you're in a plane because the first game had a pretty poor draw distance when you take the camera high up to look at areas further away from the player.

lwaves ive been on those highways in real life. They have plenty of detail that wasnt incorporated in this game. Its pretty clear from the occasional stuttering that these sections are cleverly used as loading screens. They dont make for a fun gameplay experience, and a better design would have been to shrink these down and connect the cities closer together.

They did fix the issues like cars having same exact sounds and others sounding completely different to their real life counterparts and some cars being slower than their stock versions and improved the steering and physics and the sounds of the cars overall the crew is stillin its beta so its not perfect......yet

It is but they made some unwelcome changes to the map. In New York, buildings like the iconic Empire State and the Chrysler Building have been replaced with buildings that look like cheap knockoffs and the Chrysler Building looks complete different at the top. They also changed the coastal road going out of LA up the California coast by putting a bizarre non existent roundabout. I love the Crew 2 but the only changes I didn’t like were some changes to the map.

My biggest issue playing the previous betas was that they made the map bigger, but didn't really fill it with anything. They also removed the snow in the northern mountains which a lot of people were upset about.

The graphical changes are reflected in the load times and the transitional element between the menus and the ability to fly around the world in 3d space. I think they did lower the quality of a lot in this game to get that smooth feeling when pulling back on the map, to significantly improve load times, increase draw distance and allow flight creating a larger world space on the Z axis.

You do have to take into account they added boats and planes. That means they had to fully texture every roof of every building, then they had to add water affects for boats plus make the water seem more alive in the sequel. That takes up a lot of room I imagine and the game is huge just on its own, I honestly can’t imagine how much data they used to make this game

One difference between the 2 games that bothers me is that in Chicago, they added more buildings but removed the Sears Tower (Willis Tower). Why they did that I don't know. But being the most iconic building in the city you'd think they would've left it.

the crew 2 has better physics, and to make it more easy to play on a device that is not that powerful, you have to reduce the graphics quality. I had this problem playing BeamNG, so I took away reflections, reduced the overall quality and now it works perfectly!

*Audio bug not mentioned* When playing in a crew with another player in the crew 2 they’re engine is louder and doesn’t sound the same; E.G Indian Scout for me sounds just like the real thing but my crew mates sound like a 125 Suzuki. This wasn’t an issue in The Crew (original) because all the cars and bikes sounded the same anyway

Something a lot of people don't seem to understand about the low availability of visual car damage; the reason why it is only this little has to do with broken looking cars only being negative to the game's feel when playing it. This is no burnout, this is no GTA. In this game, the gameplay is designed so that you are actually aiming to continue driving right after you hit something, sometimes even without resetting. Having an intense damage model would just not be worth it at all production-wise, since there is no room for actually showing this off, as gamellay-wise it would only be annoying (if you car would be taking more realistic damage on every tap, and if you'd have to drive around with a fucked up car) and art-wise there's no room to fit in a cutscene showing the car's damage (or such) before you reset. That being said, a cool solution to this would be to have (purely visual) more realistic damage models that would, after colliding with something and getting damaged, slowly return to the original, undamaged state (though not taking more than (~20?) seconds) - as this would give both the satisfaction of being able to mess up the car (at least, with a single blow), and the satisfaction of being able to drive with a clean, undamaged car. Though, we're talking about deadline-pushing-, push-the-employees-to-work-hard-and-deviler-mediocre-games-because-of-a-lack-of-development-time- publisher Ubisoft, though. So perhaps that's just hoping for a little too much..

The only thing that I prefer in the first game were the road textures. They had an actual "texture" to them. In TC2, they look just like a grey slab or play-doh or something. Overall, I think TC2 is a significant leap in both audio and visuals over the original. With some small design changes that can make it appear worse, such as the smooth roads and reduced damage effects, with the damage likely being a licensing and/or game design choice.

Seeing how the planes make it so that the game also needs to look great from above and on the water, I wasn't expecting a big improvement here really. Not having to render tops of buildings saves enormous amounts of memory and calculations. Also I do expect that the lighting will be improving in the real game because thats normally something you finalize when the game is done. Still, the game doesn't look all that pretty in some cases (like the pools and the world at night) but for me it was fine enough to enjoy the racing in it

I know TC is no in Final version, but first one is better form me at the moment, there is so many missing fautures in seqel - no landmarks, cars cant be tuned to new category, cant quick drive to places previously discovered, low numbers of actvities, no story and more. My biggest gripe with The Crew is the road sizes. They look really disproportionate compared to the cars. In the real world, you can't fit two cars in one lane. In The Crew 2, they look more realistic. It's a lot better.

The rims on the mustang when you show the close up they aren’t exactly round. You can see that they were more rounded in the previous title. Almost like UbiSoft forgot how to make circles. Also the mustang in the Crew 2 sounds like that from the Driver Series. Very 1st gen and low quality.

The big difference is that The Crew 1 was going for being as close as possible to the original locations where The Crew 2 went more for more fun driving and hidden routes. A few key places, like Las Vegas, you can really see that they threw the realistic look of landmarks out the window.

some effects are missing i'm guessin in the beta , like the road definition , the paddles... for sure will get an " improved graphics patch " at some point like the 1st one...

I love the fact that people are complaining that the Crew 2 looks worse, but to me I feel like they put more attention to detail in areas that matter in a racing game. That said, the first Crew game got a graphics overhaul with its first major expansion, maybe we can look forward to the same with the second game?

Yeah they have a lot of work to do before the release date.. They have a whole lot of Famous Buildings & Landmarks missing out of Chicago such as the Sears Tower, Airport, & United Center etc etc.. The Stadium is not in St Louis yet. Yankee Stadium & the Chrysler Building is not in New York yet. The Mexican/US Border Wall is not going along the Border yet. The Bridge from Detroit to Canada is not even there yet.. Lots of work to be done by the 29th. 🤔

The Crew 1 is better. It had the different tuners, drag, race and shit, this was lit.

In this case, the more simplistic, "downgraded" graphics not only makes the game run easier, but also gives off a better visual aesthetic from afar. There isn't really a point to having super detailed textures if the game isn't going to get up close to them, usually this causes a grainy effect when these textures have high amounts of detail, not only that but it makes it easier to process motion blur with these more simple textures.

keep in mind it is only a beta. there are gonna be some changes in the final game for sure. the beta is just a trial where you can test some features and maybe give a helpful feedback to the developers to enhance the game experience

The only things that improved: -water -lighting ok.... 3 years for adding planes and boats to the crew 1, seems like a dlc with water improvements.

This seems to confirm what I've seen in gameplay footage. I thought it looked disappointingly bland. Even after the graphics patch, The Crew could look either great or poor depending on lighting/time of day, etc. It looked best on sunny days with nice shadow effects, but not good at all when it was grey/cloudy. If The Crew 2 does actually look worse it will affect player immersion, and that's not good especially when Horizon 4 looks so good.

I get this was kind of considered, but this is a BETA test, the tests opens with a note that this is not meant to in any way represent the quality of the game they will sell. Having tests many games, I have done one from alpha to release once. While the graphics are there they turn them way down, to where the test was very pixelated version of what the high quality would be, something that was removed as time continued. The test is most likely been turned down for a few reasons 1) no one here is paying yet 2) they don't need the great graphics the release will provide to test the mechanics of the game and how the community feels about it. I think you need to put that message the developers provide at the beginning, rather then as a little note at the end, as to not diminish from the reputation of the game for a false reason, doing literally what they asked you not to. another way to see your argument in this video is comparing the content of crew, and the content locked crew 2 beta. yeah the one people payed for has more than a version given out to testers. Being fairly new into program development these are my thoughts, I would hate it give out testing copies and let the players know about this, only for them to turn around and do the opposite and thus hurt the reputation.

what about speed realisme? TC looked so unrealistic in terms of speed. TC2 looks (in my opinion) a lot more realistic. escpecially in higher speeds.

The one thing that really irks me about The Crew 2 is the VERY noticeable pop-in of certain smaller details and shadows. It was awful in the beta and hope it's fixed in the release as i found it way too distracting.
