So if the tyres are wearing out faster does that mean there is an added hidden rubber pollution using EV cars and an increase in road surface wear compared to Petrol or Diesel cars?

Yes, fine particulates from tyre wear get in the air and cause health problems particularly in cities. Particulates from diesel engines have reduced with better engines and DPF's but nothing can be done about particulates from tyres and EV's are increasing this type of pollution.

The EV tyre wear issue has been well researched and well hidden. Most studies put an average EV's tyre wear rate at 30% greater than a comparable sized ICE vehicle (some run as high as 40%). The other thing that has a bearing on the tyre's lifespan (and it also applies to some ICE car tyres) is that EV tyres are "low rolling resistance" to try and improve battery range. In pretty well all cases where a tyre is a "low rolling resistance" design, part of that technology includes having less tread depth to start with on your shiny new tyres (than what a regular tyre might have).🤷‍♂️ I haven't heard much more about it, but I think it was Citroen IIRC, that stated they were working on a budget EV with 500,000 km tyres. When you got into the nitty gritty though, the tyres were designed to be retreaded multiple times to achieve that claimed distance.

If her husband bought an EV and said to me "tyre wear is the same as the Dualis", that would mean it's f#cking terrible.🤷‍♂️

Couple of things to consider, 1, you cannot rotate the wheels front to back, so you will have abnormal wear on the rear rubber. 2, BEV’s produce a lot of torque, hence softer rubber. 3, what kind of tire do you use in the winter?? Because those tires are not going to do much.

Hi Lee, I've just had 4 new tyres fitted to my 69 plate SEAT Tarraco, and that, including wheel alignment came to pretty much the same cost as your two rear tyres! And these are the first replacement tyres I've had on the vehicle since I purchased it at 5 months old! I've done a total of 33,000 miles, and that includes towing a caravan! Also what people don't mention, along with the extra cost of tyres, is all the pollution from the rubber coming off of them! If they are only lasting half the time of tyres on an ICE vehicle, then they are producing twice as much rubber pollution per mile. Where is the saving of the environment in that?!?! Jonathan.

But factor in its a porsche, so poor comparison to a seat. Also rubber loss comes from any vehicle, this could be low or high depends on driving style. Ive been in forums where guys do a set of rears in 3 to 5k,some get 20 to 30k.also ev uses lots of regen braking so no brake dust/pollution as you put it. Guess your wheels never get brake dust on them. No pollution equals no vehicles, and a return to the stone age.

So where i live the state just passed a new ev tax since the fuel fund to repair roads cant keep up. so you pay 400$ a year on top of normal taxes just to register an ev now. Also insurance, my wife works in insurance and its extremely expensive. I have an audi a6 prestige, my insurance is about 2k a yr, the average Tesla is 5k a year where i live. Also home charging is getting expensive as most utility companies no longer offer off peak rates. EVs right now in my state are extremely expensive to drive now.

He tried to tell me that the original tyres ,& his winter wheels & tyres had covered 40, 000 miles that the car had covered since new & had not yet bought tyres!!! (liar). He also told me how fantastic ev`s are as you have no oil changes. Yet i looked at his brake discs & they were absolutely knackered, with a 2mm lip on them. Big bill coming for him from Audi. I asked if he had any problems with it. He said yes ,trouble with the charging port. He had been into the local Audi dealership & they cant fix it. For example if you require a complete battery replacement at 250,000 kilometres and it (conservatively) costs you $25,000 (I'm in Australia) that equates to 10 cents per kilometre. In that sense it is equal or dearer to run than an ICE car. Why don't you do a programme on that aspect of EV ownership.

I had a C-Max plug-in hybrid. The plug-in charge at home only gave me 20 miles. If I charged it at work, it would cost me $5... for a 20-mile drive. I got 32mpg. At $2.69/gallon back then(dang I miss that), it was cheaper to just use the gas hybrid. Having a hybrid, I learned a lot about all the negative aspects of an EV. As you just said, more $$ for tires. No spare, more $$ for towing. Roadside assistance doesn't carry spares. Tesla requires special tires only available from them. Get 2 flats out in the boonies, more $$ for towing. Imagine if thieves start stealing their tires. More weight due to batteries, more damage in accidents. Soon, more $$ for insurance. State taxes are being adjusted to compensate no fuel tax on full EVs. Mane full ICE vehicles can last 300k miles or more. EV batteries start failing less than 200k miles. An engine can be maintained to extend the life of the motor. You can't maintain EV batteries. EV batteries are NOT DIY friendly. Cost to replace? $8k to $20k. A heck of a lot more than a motor and trans. Spontaneous combustion while charging in the garage. Need I $ay more? What I'd like to see is natural gas motors driving electric drive motors, with a small DIY battery replacement for extra umph around hills.

More tyre wear = more particulates in the air that we have to breathe. Just one more negative environmental effect to go along with all the dangers to health caused by the heavy metals that need to be mined and processed to manufacture the batteries.

Wait til your first MOT. Those unused rear brakes we saw in the vid have been exposed to three years of road grime and because of regen braking have never touched the discs. If they are anything like 3 year old tesla ones they'll be seized solid. New calipers at three years and every other year after that. That'll raise the running costs a bit.

My quote for 4x Michelin pilot sport 4’s 235/45/R18 98Y is £995 from Tesla, or £229 permtyre from my local tyre company. After 26000 miles, that’s a cost of just over 3p per mile. So I’m spending more on Tyres per mile than I am on overnight home charging. My old vw golf went through two tyres after 30000 miles, and the next two at 50000 miles. So half the wear rate, and only £90 per tyre fully fitted.

I am glad you covered this, I had asked for the tyres to be factored in a few times during/after the "challenge drive". Very roughly I would guess that the Porsche consumed as much expense in tyres alone as the BMW did in fuel. (Remember you have put some wear on the smaller front tyres too). Certainly that drive probably did £100 in tyre wear alone. It would be interesting to see if Geoff has receipts for tyres fitted to the BMW in the past, just to get a ballpark cost per mile. It is a performance car, it weighs as much as truck, you know that it is going to cost you somewhere....

My neighbour's new Volvo EV weighs A TON more than my Passat diesel. This is not just the battery but also the stronger chassis and wheels & tyres needed for the extra weight. It simply cannot make sense to be carrying all that extra weight around, no matter how the car is propelled. I can cover almost 1000 miles in my Passat on one tank of diesel at a cost of around 19 pence a mile. There's no contest and my brother who's a senior engineer at an EV manufacturer in California says the writing is on the wall fir EVs. He reckons the only way out of this mess is hydrogen fuel cells.

Imperial Collage did a study into EV tyre wear earlier this year and their report came to this conclusion; - “Tyre wear particles pollute the environment, the air we breathe, the water run-off from roads and has compounding effects on waterways and agriculture. Even if all our vehicles eventually become powered by electricity instead of fossil fuels, we will still have harmful pollution from vehicles because of tyre wear." - So much for EV's being good for the environment!
@fishmaster1960

Tyres are an even bigger environmental problem than emissions. Almost 2,000 times more particle pollution is produced by tyre wear than is pumped out of the exhausts of modern cars, tests have shown. When comparing cars we need to look at the total environmental impact not just the bit we like which is what some people with electric cars are doing.
