Until the Criterion edition came out, all available verisons of Charade were bootleg-level garbage. Charade was public domain and so nobody was willing to release even a mediocre version of it since it would just get copied.

Yeah this sounds more like a You problem. Btw if you wanted to update your copy of 12 Angry men you should have gotten the Kino Lorber 4K.

Also, you don't 'own' Mr. Fox if you pay Disney Plus, they can remove it at will. Thats the importance of physical media.

Lol. Thought the PS4 was region free. Turns out, if you got a movie from a different region, it switches the region, but you are only allowed to switch the region 4 times before it permanently locks, ergo you can only watch a film from another region twice, then you're done.

Criterion does suck. To me, the worst part is how they are taking movies and making them 4k. Now, I am very hesitant during sales. The Kino 4k of 12 Angry Men is better. Watch In the Mood for Love; it is an unbelievable film

Great stuff - Here are some of my rules that I made for myself before buying a movie (that I often break!). - you should only buy a film that you have seen before and really like and that you know you can't wait to get it home to watch it. - don't buy the movie for the extras, as these can often be very boring such as commentary tracks that meander and those involved don't know what they are talking about ( 2 great examples are - Dario Argento commentating on his own movie in English - a language he cannot speak and came to a dead end about 2 minutes after he started the commentary track; secondly - someone like Frank Djeng - who knows his stuff but speaks so fast you can barely understand him). - Packaging is a gimmick. - try and check beforehand if an upgrade is really worth it. ie Goodfellas on 4k looks just the same as the old blu ray. There are enough reviewers online and on you tube who have done a comparison to be able to make a decision. - Its going to be collectible bullshit - how can you know - are you a prophet to know that? The are lots of limited editions on the shelves 2 or 3 years after they were released. Let me know what you think

You should start getting into Arrow Video’s limited edition sets & Second Sight’s as well (if you haven’t already). But yeah, it’s an addicting hobby but given how fantastic the picture quality & audio is it’s worth it for me. Especially with the LG G3 oled I bought recently- the HDR on some of these restorations just pops off of the screen. The grain on 1970’s films scanned from the original camera negative. The gorgeous packaging & box sets & slip covers Etc etc. we are truly living in a golden age of physical media.

When you say you on Disney+ I assume that it is a casual comment, yet it is one which can be used to defend the criterion collection. The reason being you pay to stream movies not to own a copy you can own as your own under basic copyright constrictions of course. The other thing is that shows and movies that don't sell well on streaming platforms do actually get taken down making them impossible to watch. So, for all the ridiculous amounts of movies out there online 9and I fully agree with your analysis on this) some still fall by the wayside. Finally let's face it, many of us love to hold an object that is beautifully designed and crafted in our hands. What the future for film viewing in the future has never been so difficult to predict. Thanks for your excellent video and I apologise for leaving more than one comment.

Criterion is great but overrated these days. You definitely don't need the 'Criterion Version' to enjoy the film if on a limited budget. Regular Blu-ray are usually FINE for enjoying the actual movie.

I dont dislike Criterion they have a rep thats unsurpassed, they are pricey and there does need to be more UK releases.

BFI own the rights to Kurusawa films in this country. You may ask why hasn't Seven Samurai come out in 4k yet? I don't know?

Criterion was incredibly special 20 years ago when most of these films were unavailable elsewhere. Now most of these films (and more) are available elsewhere, in better transfer quality, less expensive and with just as many extras. I really don’t understand the cultish devotion to Criterion. Save your pocket money 😀

I thought you look like the guy on the dvd cover (criterion) After Hours. People in the U.S at least get the half price yearly sales. The rest of us are ignored. It is a real conundrum in my opinion. I watched In the Mood for Love which got rave reviews yet it put me to sleep. Your video is very timely for me and you have uncovered the psychology behind the temptation of Criterion brilliantly. There's a film waiting to be made ' The Temptation of Cult of Criterion.'

Watching this video in its entirety is the equivalent to buying a third copy of 12 Angry Men (when you already own 2 versions). In other words…highly recommended!!!

Criterion is too mainstream. Become a collector of Vinegar Syndrome for true hipster cred. Seriously, though, for the working man's Criterion (meaning cult films), there is Arrow, Severin and Vinegar Syndrome.
