I would like to mention a missed point; shot bolts ability to wall/floor bang. Even if you miss a shot or two, they give you the option to apply pressure and force movement as people often relocate to avoid getting wall/floor banged. Not to mention hearing shotgun blasts go through walls near them are often nerve wrecking and might cause them to panic and make more stupid decisions. Probably not a tactic effective in solos but I think it is good to have nevertheless. I say the crossbow with half shot bolts and half normal brings the best out of the crossbow. Shot bolts for PvP and Normal for PvE. Another great video btw. Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas to you!

Not just that but shotbolt gives a bit more leeway with those side-shots, since if you hit the arm, the pellets will go through the arm and hit the torso for higher damage. The normal bolt, however, just sticks in the arm.

One conclusion we drew was that we wanted to highlight the differences between the crossbows and the bow and arrow more and decided to do a couple of changes, like making the strong bleed exclusive to the crossbows with its slower rate of fire, as well as making the crossbows and bow more consistent to limb damage overall by doing some minor tweaks to both weapons. We also increased the ammo pool for the crossbows somewhat to be more in line with the bow and arrow. With these changes, we feel both weapon classes can carve out their respective gameplay niche better."

The crossbow in my opinion is the strongest weapon in the game. Due to the damage and even if you don’t one shot the enemy they will have one health and will have heavy bleed so theirs no chance of survival.

​@@Yourantsally It's also borderline unusable for how much it costs. The god awful aperture blocks like almost all of your ADS vision so you're often fighting the weapon more than the enemy hunters. Not to mention it's special ammo and barely has any of it. I haven't seen a person with Nitro in like half a year almost, and I play almost every day. Meanwhile Xbow is dirt cheap, has reusable ammo, can be configured as both a pressure and area denial depending on which of the two you took and which special ammo you chose. Far as I see it, only reason to ever pick a Nitro over an Xbow is if you really intend to do something with the nitro's longer range capabilities, or you wanna burst the boss down really fast. But then... just pick a bomblance instead. Shit kills bosses just as fast, and you have the benefit of the strongest melee weapon that can also act as an explosive crossbow itself. So really, both the weapons I just mentioned do either of the Nitro's jobs better apart from the range. Xbow is fantastic in pve and you can find it's quite deadly in compounds, far more than shotguns in the right hands, even the small pistol sized xbow can oneshot, and STILL bring utility. Bomblance is not only a boss killer, you're pretty much king of the boss building. With unrivaled Melee power, a crossbow that shoots stickies and generally being very easy to use since it's attacks are diagonal and horizontal, meaning you can more easily hit people unlike most other melees, it's a powerhouse that can easily repel any push provided you play around the fact that you need to close the distance first.

Something you missed about the shotbolt is that it is ALWAYS a guarunteed one tap as long as you hit the hunter with the bolt. (If you hit the ground next to them, or wallbang them you may get a hitmarker without getting a kill) but otherwise, it does enough damage to one hit legs or arms, AND since the shotgun shell detonates on impact there is no damage fall off. This greatly increases the viability of the shotbolt and given that you can retrieve normal bolts the best combo is half normal/half shotbolts. You'll have more than enough shotbolts to win your fights, and more than enough regular bolts for PVE. Just some pro tips.

@@willchase5692 No. If the bolt connects directly to a hunter it will one shot. There is no damage drop off since the shotgun blast from the bolt is generated on impact, and it does enough damage to still one shot even if it hits the legs. (Leg damage does 60% damage, arm damage does 80%, shotbolt does 455 damage, so at worst with a leg shot you still do 273 damage.) If you get a hitmarker and it doesn't kill, it is likely that you hit the ground near the enemy hunter and a few pellets splashed on them, or you shot through something and got reduced penetration damage.

Had one of my most satisfying kills the other day with a Snake Seer. I was at fishery on the new map, all teams were there in a cluster cuss firefight. I ran down below on the under dock area and killed a player with my tanto, his partner chased and threw a dynamite bundle at me, I ran and survived the blast thanks to bulwark, made a 180 turn and fired my bolt through the smoke while he was chasing AND playing the jackass theme music at me. I nailed him dead center, the jackass music abruptly stopped. I laughed. My dead partner laughed. 10/10 would crossbow again.

I run a Winfield with Levering and full poison bolts. More of a tool at that point but being able to lock down people inside their own hideouts is very nice.

@@sandmaneyes Also the fact that you can drop a poison bolt a little bellow the feet of someone you downed. So the enemy thinks they're safe to be picked up. But when they revive, the character model stands up into the poison and you get another kill. Seems to work 2 out 3 times! Thanks for the tip though, I'll do some Winfield Hand crossbow today to see how it feels!

After quite some time playing the game, and picking the same few weapons, a friend and I decided to unlock every gun variant to really get experience with every weapon, and I have to say the crossbow was shockingly good. It's basically a silent romero+. It's only annoying, because it kind of needs the reduced reload close up. Well, doesn't *need* it, but it's pretty huge. Like the perks for rifles increase their usefulness by like 10%, but the crossbow perks make it almost 45% better feeling, which is a big swing. I still might prefer the bow, because it feels a little more fun for me, but I do highly recommend the crossbow. My personal loadout for it is crossbow with quartermaster and a shorty Springfield with a scope. The crossbow covers the close to mid, and long is covered by the rifle. You still get screwed by the distant mid range fights, so maybe a shorty winnie instead. And then a derringer. It's the perfect quick firing gun to follow up a bolt that *just* doesn't kill someone. Also the hand crossbow is a top-tier single slot weapon. there's no room for missing, but if you have a bolt action rifle especially, you're already good for every range but super close, and being able to one-tap to the chest with no perks and still bring a long gun is MASSIVE.

I second what someone else said, half shotbolt crossbow is the way. Side shots are no longer an issue, you can wallbang really well (a really good example is when someone is peeking a window and you shoot the wall below their head for a bodyshot one tap) and if you practice with it you have a nitro with unlimited range at one tenth the price. Regular bolts are still great though and make killing AI a breeze. Great video!

Nah, there are a lot of advantages it has over the bow, first of all no draw-time making it a way more mobile weapon. The bow is good for ambushing, the crossbow is better for pushing.

The small crossbow and poison darts is my utility tool of choice. It one shots most of the smaller annoying enemies such as flamers and armored grunts. You can take out mobs of regular grunts in one shot silently. It can be used to silently deal with crows, ducks, horses and animal pens. You can use it to block doorways as well as player resurrects. With the exception of the spider it does mega silent damage to all the bosses. Its the perfect tool to accompany a rifle.

Didn't like it at all when I started playing Hunt, but now it has become my favorite weapon. The combination of one-tap potential, stealth and bleeding damage is very strong when playing solo. I like to play it with the Conversion Pistol with FMJ ammo for range and wallbang potential. Uppercut works too, but it takes a while to unlock and shoots/reloads too slowly.

Good secondary's for the crossy are pax, lemat, officer, and I guess uppercut if you got the bucks or you're using explosive. Due to the 1 bolt nature of the crossy, you really want backup firepower for CQC in case you miss which the officer and lemat do wonderfully. On the other hand, if you're confident with your crossbow aim, the pax works for giving you some better firepower at range as well as for finishing off an enemy your crossbow didn't quite kill. If you're using explosive, uppercut is the only secondary you should be using, it pairs way too well to use anything else. I'd go as far to say if you're not willing to use the uppercut, just don't run explosive.

Half shotbolt, half normal bolts and an Uppercut. That's my most played loadout in Hunt. It is effective at all ranges (except long range sniping), can shoot through almost anything with Shotbolt or Uppercut, can apply bleed pressure. The only thing holding it back a little bit is the fact, that you have to be good at aiming.

I absolutely love the Crossbow, it has been my main weapon for the past 3 years of playing this game, been through all of the shitty bugs and issues with it, to the wonderful buffs it got with the ammo update and now even the heavy bleed changes all of the bolts serve a use, yes even explosive bolts, the strongest factor of the Explosive bolts is how good they are for finishing off Hunters, in the future, try doing a strategy where you shoot someone with a heavy hitting secondary, say an Uppercut, something that is beyond the 1-tap range of the Crossbow, then use the explosive bolts to finish them off particularly around corners. Shotbolts are dangerously close to being OP, i'm not even kidding, in the land of bullshit that is Slugs and Long ammo, Shotbolt having a technically infinite 1-shot range is nothing short of amazing, and it can eliminate the risk of not 1-tapping a hunter at close range if you somehow strike the limbs, (though granted, the changes to the bolts causing heavy bleed is nothing short of excellent) only issue i have with the Crossbow is unfortunately more of an issue with how most 5-6* lobbies go, and how the Crossbow feels a tad redundant to use when Slugs exist, with Slugs IMO fundamentally breaking the game with how strong they are at close range, making the Crossbow, an already difficult weapon to use, even harder.

@@HomeReel you make a valid point, but realistically you are going to bring a secondary, and usually it will be a pistol, even a basic Caldwell Conversion Pistol can work with the explosive bolt procedure i made earlier Explosive bolts are also pivotal for taking out a serious nuisance with some people....Concertina Wire, it is a monster for taking out wire, not to mention destroying any doors, slides and Shutters to provide more visual range for the attacking team

Crossbow main here. Love this weapon. I pair it with a lemat with slugs and regular small ammo. So many situations multiple people will corner you and rush you in pairs if they can. Let them. Crossbow to the chest to the first one and slug to the chest with the 2nd one within a second. My 2nd favorite load out now is the bow with a silenced vet.

Might I advocate for the handcrossbow? So... I have this favourite build where I pick a Handcrossbow + dual pistols. Another thing I pick is decoys of both bullet and dynamite variety. Anyways, I hope you know where im going with this. Handcrossbow is hands down the best utility weapon in the game. I have many, MANY times fooled players into making bad decisions and look in a bad direction just because of the Chaos Bolt. Dynamite decoys is good for throwing into a compound to give space for a rush, bullet decoys is good for throwing out from a compound to make people waiting outside look elsewhere. The chaos bolt is the fight shifter. And with good use of dual pistols, you ensure good enough firepower and fighting speed.

Crossbow is great! I have wiped countless trio servers with it as a solo. I will usually bring one slot shotbolt for wallbanging and one slot normal along with a uppercut for longer range shots or duel conversions for teams that put a ton of pressure. Imo it's really all about positioning and timing. Knowing when to break away from a fight and when to reengage. Don't shoot at the first person you see the moment you see them. It is also way more reliable than any of the shotties. I agree it is one of the best weapons in the game.

I remember seeing psychoghost having to deal with some bugs with the normal bolts. The target would stay still and not even see ghost shooting him with the bolt but it would simply disapear leading to obviously bad situations. I ended up trying and getting similar results sometimes even with the bow... i still don't know if it's a bad connection or simply the server eating up the shots. That plus getting stuck in the "no ammo" animation after resupplying did force me to stop using the bow and cross at the very least till i hear some news about it. I haven't tried again for the christmas event but the "no ammo" bug is still recent.

I like to take 2x Bows and Plug half the ammo slots with concertina, so I have same amount of Normal arrows as before but the ability to switch between Concertina and Normal arrows really quick, can be helpful when in a large fight.

You need poison arrows for the hunting bow to be even close to the crossbow, still the crossbow will always be better because of the ability to move while still being ready to shoot. The movement penalty of the hunting bow is what really kills it IMO.

I am a big fan of the handcrossbow when I am going solo. The poison darts are great for pve, and denying revive, while the normal shot is having basically a romero hand cannon with slugs (without penetration).

Note: shotgun bolts have zero damage falloff since as long as you hit your target, they’re essentially getting a point-blank shotgun blast to the gut. It might also be possible to use these to wallbang, but I have yet to test to see if the buckshot of the shotgun bolts can penetrate. Explosive crossbow bolts can prematurely detonate explosives, especially when they’re being cooked. I once shut down an enemy push by blowing up a frag bomb in their hands using explosive crossbow bolts. The fact that you can chip away at an enemy’s health regardless of the cover they have makes it fairly viable for PvP, if you don’t mind wasting three-to-five bolts on every duo/trio you come across.

Yes it was! So I have a professional grade mic at home, but I am on the road for the holidays so I have a cheaper mic with me. Audio processing could only take me so far, but future videos will sound better

I‘m one of those chads which use the Bow most of the time, like 275 damage in close combat and a Mosin Nagant Obrez and you have already a cheap and effective loudout. Throw in poison arrows and the Poison Sense trait and you are already way better off in close combat.

That's okay. There's a reason I don't talk about damage drop off: the numbers aren't public. And for bolt drop, just given the nature of a ballistic trajectory, the elevation and angle you fire from greatly affect how far the bolt goes. The graphs are a bit of an attempt at showing that. Here is the ballistic tool I was playing with if you want to see what I mean: www.physics.smu.edu/fattarus/ballistic.html Basically, there is far too much variability for both topics. If you notice, some clips I fire from the ground and some from a roof. It is something that comes with practice but it's not necessarily quantifiable for something like this. Anyway, hopefully you enjoy the next one!

Imo Bolt Thrower should become base kit. The animation looks like it should be default instead of pulling back the string, placing the arrow, and then carefully placing the CB on your shoulder before firing

funny thing...just at the time i got back to Hunt and try the crossbow...i managed to score some kills with it when back then i had no idea how to use the crossbow...after these video about crossbow i starting to realized how to use it properly my only concern right now is shotbolt is now 1/6 and i will find myself run out of ammo quickly...oh well standard bolt gave me 20 shots and retrievable plus cause enemies bleeding too...probably better choice

I did actually manage to use the pull arrow to kill someone once. Got an arm shot in shotgun range and instead of going for the 6 second reload the mechanic dawned on me and I ran at the guy tapping f for the kill.

Crossbow + Uppercut very fun loadout

I think you really downplayed how powerful crossbow custom ammo is. The shotbolt basically means, if you hit them above the waist, they are dead. 100m bodyshot? Dead instantly. Granted, you aren't likely to hit crossy shots at those ranges...but you can. It also makes arms a much better target as a lot of the shotgun pellets will go straight into the body, meaning arm shots are still generally lethal, even at range. Explosive bolts are a bit funky. The best way to use splody bolts is in combination with your secondary (which really should be an uppercut). With this loadout and playstyle, you have VERY powerful utility and can easily do AOE chip damage, then swap to your uppercut to finish the job. If you do this playstyle right, it's scary effective.

The difficult thing about these is there are so many viable strategies that to cover all of them would take much longer. People CAN take special ammo, but pairing with the uppercut diminishes how effective the crossbow is for how cheap it is. It would be difficult to go broke running the standard crossbow every game with the officer pistol. Really, I want people to use it how they want to, these videos are just my suggestions

@@HomeReel I rarely use uppercut with the crossbow if it's not explosive. I agree, it just doesn't fit the crossbows price. But when uppercut pairs with explosive so stupidly well, I can't recommend anything else.

i never use crossbow without explosive ammo in the 2nd slot because of breaching doors and windows which helps rushing compounds so much and isn't as niche as you might think

I'm pretty sure I used the special darksight trait to track my target upon a limb hit up till they stopped the bleed cause I lost track of my arrow. Was using a bow at the time.
