For everyone bashing Scott's "technique," anyone that mixes live makes mistakes. Some more than others. Making zero mistakes is either a sign that 1) No actual mixing is happening or 2) The DJ isn't doing much interesting other than playing tracks in sequence. He's not relying on Ableton Live and a Macbook to do the heavy lifting. This is the "old-school" way. Still sounds pretty freakin' great to me.

Crystal Method breaks down music layer by layer, he peels it like an onion until only parts are left, then he takes those parts dismantles them down to their molecular level, until what you are hearing can barely be considered music by your ears. Just noise. Then he takes you on a trip where he takes those basic pieces of sound and puts them back together bit by bit until you are hearing the most beautiful melody. That is how I describe it to someone that has never heard Crystal.

On a side note, the tour manager for The Crystal Method is none other then Sean King from Studio Sound Stream in LA... for those unaware, he's another legendary DJ from the heyday of the LA party scene. At one time A list DJ's visiting LA would stop by Sean's place to loosen up, hang out and warm up before their shows, it was a crazy place that was always in the throws of creative flux. I remember spending a few weeks there while working on a project years ago. It was an great and very memorable time, so many creative talents flowing through, at any and all times of the day and night...and you could wind up going from working away in one of the studios.... to... ummmm, anything else... like being on the roof, with god knows who, for example, while anyone, from pretty much anywhere, was lighting up the decks in one of the other rooms... it could go from 3 people to 30 faster then you could say, "wow it's quiet in here today." I remember a specific inncident when Sean started spinning some records as daylight was creeping in, he was really really casual, just kind of playing around... as he delivered a tour de' force performance demonstrating his ability to spontaneously spin literally ANYTHING and everything in reach of his hands into the mix. He played it all that morning from trance to breaks, an old mariachi record here....a Led Zepplin record there, it was surreal to watch. Not taking anything away from Scott and this killer set right here, that's got me going back down memory lane... If I remember correctly, one of The Crystal Method's earlier album covers was a picture taken from the roof of Sean's Studio ;) Wow seeing Scott play dubstep was also a little surreal, but the rap lyrics... was perfect... another guy capable of dropping anything at anytime. Amazing.

No, CM has always been active. Until Sirius XM dropped the channel, they had Community Service, which was their weekly show that both Scott and Ken did, and then when Ken retired, Scott continued on with. If you do a Google search, you should be able to find some of them online to stream. Well worth your time.
