This is GORGEOUS! I love this era of The Cult! Best dancing ever from Ian! I am obsessed with Jamie too. For everyone who doesn't like the Electric album, I always think it was inevitable. Watching performances from The Cult from before 87, they were always a rock n roll band live, including as SDC. I feel Electric was a natural progression, although yes it had that mega production for a US market. Either way, for me from Dreamtime to Electric they are just such a special band, and remain so underrated. The Cult will always be my favourite band ❤️

stumbled across this and it's great to read so many comments regarding Nigel, like many others here i loved his drumming and he was an inspiration for me learning as a kid 30 years ago, the cult were at their best with him in. I still drum and I still love his drumming so it's great the internet is about and i've managed to fill in some of the gaps in his story. His drumming is so good on the live at the marquee record and the resurrection joe old grey whistle test, i would say it's even more on point than the studio records. That drum solo on resurrection joe is tricky, clever and always played so beautifully, he used to make it look so easy. then there's the drumming on 'bonebag' which shows how versatile and technical he could be. I had a bootleg of a full gig at the hammersmith palais from this time which had a few more of the tracks that would appear on 'love' on with his drumming on, they sounded fantastic, he made the songs bounce. it's such a shame what transpired. RIP Nigel, always one of my drumming heroes.

Under rated means nothing. It is rated like it is. He belonged to underground environment and he's a drummer, not the apropriate place in a band to become famous.
@shannon67083 жыл бұрын
@@arnaudbleu still. this band is recognized by those of us who were exposed to the underground sound whatever that means. I just know good music when I hear it. I've been listening to this band on tape with LOVE since I was 12. Honestly, though they should be recognized in the rock and roll hall of fame or something. because they were a big part of my life growing up and I still listen to them now. same shit going on in society. music still good and relevant. for those of us who grew up after punk and before grunge. where are the real drummers these days its all drum machines and well, it's nice to hear a great drummer somewhat of a dying breed these days? Ian sings from his soul and they can't be denied or underrated.
@krasteff3 жыл бұрын
Southern Death Cult's drumming was more tribal as was all goth bands drumming style at the time. They were the ones who are underrated, Nigel went later into heavy rock style and lost his identity.

I am responding to a very old post, but didn't Nigel leave the band literally within days of this performance? I think "She Sells Sanctuary" was already charting at this time. I can remember this precise time period fairly well in my life as it was so chaotic.
@TomTremayne6 ай бұрын
The Cult were due to do a performance for television, I think it was for Top of the Pops. Nigel was meant to be there at 4pm but was late getting ready & gearing up for it etc. At 20 to 4 he started the journey by car. The car was an old Mini, either borrowed or recently bought second-hand. He was late, rushing & near the end of the King's Road somewhere he clipped a curb going round a roundabout which rolled the Mini over. He was OK but couldn't continue & didn't make the recording slot. The police had arrived after a member of the public called the emergency services thinking the crash was more serious than it was. The police made Nigel stay with the car & get checked out by the ambulance men thus delaying still further any chance of making it to the television studios. It was this failure to show up for the TV recording that was the catalyst for him being thrown out of the band.

I saw the Cult numerous times from directly in front of Ian. First row center. I was shocked how loud his voice is! The shows were loud of course, as was the crowd. And I had loud stage monitors 5 feet away, turned away from me of course. But Ian's voice was SO much louder than everything else from 7 feet away! I'd hate to have to record him in the studio. Talk about clipping microphones and preamps!

The Cult BURIED u2. I was into u2 but tired of them after achtung baby. They're nothing more than a 38 Special call vet band now and about half as interesting. I would have loved to see Adam Larry and edge (duh) actually progress musically but that would have left Sonny Bono floundering in Michael Buble's territory. The Cult had an authenticity and dark charm that u2 lacked. It was somewhere in the sky above love and rockets, zero boys, and Peter Murphy. Ian and Billy have the duo quality without the NFL level ego.
