unschooling is so misunderstood, I'm mom of 8 grown children ages 44 to 25 yrs old. 6 of them are college graduates all debt free. One is a creative ma5h and science public school teacher in Florida (who went to collage debt free by travling to other counties doing volunteer work as an exchange student) , one medical assistant in Colorado, one middle management for a medical group in Florida one supervisor for the department of transportation for the state of Georgia, one a successful businesses owner, one working full time in sales and on disabled, but lives independently. All still read for fun, cook, sew, still talk about all tge fun and crazy stuff we did unschooling, like how cooking they learned math, reading science and problem solving, one field trip to wildlife preserve, turned into a whole year of theamed books, foods, learing about mammals, sea life, crafts and so much more. I learned as they did along the way, as our family grew, so did the challenges and rewards. Homeschooling isnt for everyone, unschooling isnt for everyone, yet no matter how much people want to deny it, parents are their children's 1st teacher, and who they continue to learn from life long by example. What do you choose to teach? I chose love, kindness, tolerance, patience, problem solving, critical thinking, honesty, integrity, self-control, confidence, determination, giving, community-oriented, self sufficiency and above all else the love of God.

I am so glad that as Americans, we can all pick the best school option for our kids. Kids all learn differently. I probably will do box curriculum when my daughter is homeschooled, but i plan to do so much that she wouldn't get in the school system. Your kids are learning and growing. Your kids are blessed. I think unschooling gets a bad rep because of people like Dayna Martin. They had documentaries on her family and they were completely free range.....no school work, no routines, no discipline or any punishments etc....She claimed her kids were unschooling. They seemed very behind academically. I think she popped in my head when you talk about unparenting. You are a great mom and it is clear how much you love your kids.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

BRAVO MAMABEAR! I find no fault with your philosophy of educating children. My children and many of my friends children have grown into wonderful successful adults in all ways. Be of good courage! I sincerely hope those who were critical will have listened to your wonderful outlook and manner of sharing that children schooled in "non-traditonal" ways, certainly do grow into very successful, well adjusted and very happy adults. My children chose the fields they wanted to pursue as they entered college, all very well prepared. Two of my children have Master's Degrees, and one has a Doctorate in Medicine. MommaBear, I truly appreciate your heartfelt - and gentle, kind manner - in the way you love, teach, and guide your children - each of them reflect these wonderful lessons you are instilling in them, day by day! ❤🙏🌹Blessings to you and your family, including the precious little one growing under your heart! 🙏

Wow I love this!!!! So true about public schools it’s actually sad. My son graduated this past year and he had to have special help because he had an AVM rupture at the beginning of 5th grade. I can’t tell you how many times I argued with them to teach him …even with his vision support, learning support they didn’t teach him…so frustrating when a child wants to learn. My daughter is in 6th grade and has some traumatic memories from seeing her brother in PICU and rehab so I asked for extra help for her in school. When she has a question the teachers say go look on your Chromebook the answers are there. Half of her classes she doesn’t even have books, they are on her Chromebook as well. It blows my mind how these kids can’t spell or hold a pencil, read or know basic math facts. The stress of all the standardized tests 🤦🏼♀️My daughter gets so upset when it’s time for them…I told her it’s to make it look like the teachers are doing their job and I just tell her to do her best and don’t worry about it. Let it come back on them for not teaching. It’s so frustrating.

You do a great job with your kids & family. The Education system doesn't cater for children that fall outside the 'normal range' so to speak & can be lost at school most days as the teacher can't get to every child. One size does not fit all or apply in Education. When I was a young mother I had my own battle with the ED & had some wins because I bucked the system, I took heat for it & I didn't care as I knew our kids deserved better, 55 yrs later the system still doesn't meet the needs of kids or parents. It seems many people form an opinion from a place of ignorance, that's their problem not yours so leave it with them & keep doing the beautiful job you do with your family. People rarely change thir opinion until it directly affects them, so be joyful you've found your way of being & pray they find theirs. You're so on the right track, so enjoy the ride no matter what people write in the comments, as I feel there's much love for you here, you have a blessed day too!❤️ 🙏

I see the lessons that are being taught in the every day life living that are enriching them in ways that they would not get in schools. I am an observer of what is going on in the back ground of living. The options that your children have in life is beyond measure. Keep up the awesome job that you are doing. I don't fit inside the box and never have. I didn't have an easy life because of it. I tried really hard to treat my children as individuals. I love them all equally and emphasized to them that, and that they would all be treated as individuals. I wish that I had been confident enough to unschool my children. I am a retired early childhood teacher (23 years) I have a BS & Masters in early childhood. When I graduated from college the trend was whole language (very,very much like unschooling). I was so excited! And. Then. I. Got. A. Real. Teaching. Job. Whole language??? Nope. Test geared curriculum. Test. Test. Test. About halfway thru my public school career (11 years) I was sent to a workshop on a curriculum called Manners of the Heart. I was required to teach manners (parent’s job) and character/morale traits (parent’s job). I got a little bit of a break when I went to private Christian schools. But I was amazed at how little time parents (not all) spent with their children! They would drop them off at 7 am and pick them up at 6 pm (before & after care) then off to football or dance classes. I now homeschool our youngest (middle schooler)and see so much much irony between “structured” education and homeschooling (however you choose to do it). Many schools have gardens that the students may get to spend 2 days a week or so in for less than an hour. But if you use gardening as part of your homeschool? You are questioned. I have found homeschooling to promote a love of reading like no other. In both the public and private schools I taught in students were pressured to read X amount of books so they could TEST on those books. Ugh. And who knows what’s best for your own child? The government or a parent. And on a side note: we have school way more than the required days bc of developing life long learners. Tornado day (I’m in Alabama) - schools are closed? We rock on. If my child is ill - we try to do something that day. And how many days are wasting in test prep and testing??Too many to count. Just know that as a retired educator - who has been on both sides of education - I support you. ❤

The interesting thing about this video is while I don’t agree that anyone should judge you as well as making assumptions that are incorrect. Maybe you shouldn’t make assumptions about those of us that send our children to public school and teach them valuable life skills. To make the assumption that people who send their children to public schools or private schools for that matter, don’t also teach them the skills that we feel appropriate to live their life in unfair.Unfair judgement goes both ways💕 I feel like we all “ indoctrinate”our children in the ways our individual family’s beliefs, I would never tell you that you are “indoctrinating” your children. All 3 of my sons went to public schools and they all have careers they are passionate about including one son that is career military. You are also judging parents that choose to use a homeschooling curriculum. Maybe if you don’t want to feel judged, you should look at your own judgment of others.

Could you share specifically where you disagreed with what I was saying? So I can be held accountable for my misrepresentation of the public school.

Yes in a way we are all indoctrinating our children by sharing beliefs or views. I think the main take away is parents need to be parents like it sounds like you were/are. Thinking about there child’s education not just sending them somewhere blindly.
@lisatakeitorleaveit5 ай бұрын
@@mommabear2many well I understand you have a passionate opinion, and I completely respect that. I also feel you made blind statements about children that are sent to private schools and the families involvement and the raising of their children. If a child goes to school during the day, there is still many hours and summers and vacations in which we teach our children other important skills. Also as a mother who sent her kids to public schools, I was extremely involved in what I felt was appropriate and what was not appropriate. When we would get summer reading, I would always send a letter that we weren’t doing it because the summers were for the things I chose to teach my children and they had the entire school year to teach. The summers were mine.

@@mommabear2many yes parents need to be parents, but that is regardless of how they decide to educate their children. You’re not more of a parent or a better parent than I was because I sent my children to public schools and I’m not a better parent than you are because You unschool your children. The take away here is just as you don’t want to be blindly judged harshly those of us who send our children to public schools deserve the same.

You do a great job. I do know un parenting children who couldn’t read in high school. My friend volunteered to teach them. But as you said that happens in the public school as well. I do believe that tests like the ACE are geared for the knowledge that is important no matter the direction the child goes. The military test is the same. A book like ACE for dummies was very enlightening. There does need to be a core to give children an opportunity to succeed whether it be college pr a trade. That’s not saying a parent teaches for the test but it is a summary of what is required if they do opt for further college or a trade of their own business. Every child should develop their skills accordingly to their interests I was fortunate that in the last 1-3 years of education my children were in a conservative public school. Their teachers were Christians. One teacher was a former pastor. So whether it be Christian, home, or public school as you say the children need parenting and direction. .

The biggest red flags for me are that these are mostly videos from people who don’t usually talk about education, are unfamiliar with the U.S. system of education, previously had very small accounts/low views, AND defend public school within the U.S. (not all videos are from creators that meet all of that criteria.)
