The whole LOVE album start to finish is brilliant. Saw this tour in Vancouver May 02 1986 at UBC's Thunderbird arena. Last show of the tour. Ian Astbury swan dove into the crowd, clearing the substantial "security gap" down front then swam back through the crowd where he proceeded to tear the drum kit apart as the finale was still being played. Ahh. Those were the days...

seen The Cult few times over the years, such a brilliant band that sometimes goes unnoticed in alternative music recognition, they were mystic pioneers sonically, giving us gems such as "Moya" - "Spiritwalker" - "83rd Dream" 🙏✌💜🎶 love your channel guys!

They were unnoticed at all. They were one of the major British alt bands from an American audience perspective. The reason they don’t get as much hype in retrospect is that some alternative fans felt they sold out on later albums.

The magic of the Cult is that their sound changed dramatically with every album, this was a great album but those that follow are much heavier (which is what they wanted). Try Lil’ Devil or’Love Removal Machine’ from Electric or ‘Fire Woman’ or ‘Sun King’ from Sonic Temple. Zero influence from The Edge’, this is early Eighties and they would cry real tears if they heard you compare them to Duran Duran. When Billy was asked why did you go heavier for Sonic Temple he said “We weren’t good enough to do this before, we got better.”

It has been mentioned before that Billy Duffy was trying to emulate some of The Edge’s sound when recording the Love album (listen to songs like Big Neon Glitter). I believe this was explained in the liner notes for the Love album’s omnibus edition. They were even trying to enlist U2’s producer Steve Lillywhite for this album but through bad (good?) luck they were sent to the wrong Steve (Brown), who did a phenomenal job. Not a thing to be ashamed of, as both bands came from the post-punk scene of the 80s. Ian Astbury was once a roadie for U2. The Cult were a goth supergroup when they arrived in 1983-84, and were being compared to U2 as one of the last great rock bands.

Edie (Ciao Baby) The Cults song about Edie Sedgwick of Andy Warhol fame, The girl whose family had more money than God but didn't like the company she kept so they cut her off, which made her act more outrageous. You feel her sad lonely life in the song and the hopelessness of a family that cares more about their standing with the elite than their child. At the end of the song, the studio version anyway. the band decays into this sound that recreates the sound of New York City at night in music, From high above on a highrise penthouse balcony it's beautiful.

I personally don't think Ian Duffy is overrated I don't think he's just that rated because when you think of great guitarists like the obvious Jimi Hendrix Jeff Beck b.b. King the Legendary David Gilmour Stephen Rothery from the band Marillion and even they're not my favourite guitar players but even Jimmy Page Jack White Angus from ACDC Keith Richards another ones which are ok forgetting names but The Kinks Small Faces Pete Townshend Santana even Eric Clapton it when he was in his prime that's just name a very small few that I can remember there's loads more names escape me at the moment we got so many magnificent guitar players in Duffy is I don't think anywhere near them people you know he's a good guitar player loads better than me I find him a bit repetitive not complicated and effect I quite like guitar players that are not over compliment complicated oh and I forgot the Legendary Gary Moore which is up there with Jimi Hendrix in my humble opinion it might not necessarily right be right all to other people's tastes but for what my little says worth I'm not putting Stephen Duffy down at all he done a perfect job for the Cult they didn't need anyone better I think he was the perfect man for the job at the time but I don't think it would be rated as a really amazing guitar player is a good guitar player in my opinion but I'm not you know I'm no authority figure in anyway on guitar players so it's just my words some people may fit think he's the bee's knees anyway I've waffle done enough all of us you lot I hope you can read this I'm really badly dyslexic and I have to rely on this thing I'm talking to to write what I'm trying to say that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it lol

I just cant imagine someone not knowing this song. I saw them live 4 times in the 80's. The band was always great live but Ian Astbury much like David Lee Roth is crap live. It's often like he's never heard the song before. Rushing through the lyrics at times and just skipping over stuff. Great in the studio though. Love is one of my favourite albums.
@punkoid764 жыл бұрын
29Roadie In the eighties I think it was a combination of youth and alcohol that affected his performances, a shame as he’s a great, natural singer. I think the image and posturing took over in those days. I saw them on the Electric and Sonic Temple tours, his voice wasn’t great on either. The Old Grey Whistle Test performance of Love Removal Machine is pretty good vocally though.
@terryhalligan10663 жыл бұрын
Hi there while you are entitled to your opinion I just have to mention that you'll sing saying about them a bit being a bit like Duran Duran and a bit like the Edge and U2 is kind of baffled me really because I think they might have been around before them the used to be called the southern death cult they are a gothic band I suppose now days people would say 2 bit of a Emo band all the emos copy it from the old gothic bands some of the bands are Sisters of Mercy I think one is called Jesus and Mary Chain and another one called a mission if I remember correctly most people into that type of music used to wear black clothes boots black hair vibe to it they write their own little click definitely not rock type thing it was their own type of music and definitely not a Duran Duran type thing but if you pick them up from that then that's that's entirely up to you but the Old expect quite annoyed if it's hurt them back in the day of something like that and I think the Cure was a bit of a gothic band if I can remember correctly as well well I've got some brilliant albums out from that album that rain was on was good love I got she Sells Sanctuary on it was a really big hit back in the day for them no yeah they are brilliant hits throughout their career I think they started out as the Cult in the early 80s if that's any help

Cult songs always sound like raw demos to me, like they are laying down a really great idea or two, usually a really strong riff and vocal basics...and then just repeat that. I am left wanting more, for the band to flesh out and expand those ideas to make a truly great song. I get the raw quality is their signature, their calling card. But, always felt their songs would have really taken off with some help with production and arranging. That said, the Cult song that comes closest to what I am talking about is She Sells Sanctuary. Terrific opening riff and vocal, but what makes the song take off is the bridge. Quiet down slightly, reprise the original guitar pick opening, then a great drum fill and the climatic "Ah-aaaaaaah" vocal and the whole band banging to take it home. Fine balance to strike, I know, between slightly more sophisticated arrangement while keeping that raw quality. But, that is what makes Sanctuary their best song in my opinion.
