Awesome bass player, the man who inspired me to go out and buy a bass and learn to play. Dreamtime Live at the Lyceum was the first album I learned to play end to end. I was usually very knackered by the end of it!

The Astbury/Duffy/Stewart/Preston line-up was always The Cult at their best - Mark Brzezicki did a fantastic job of drumming on Love and Les Warner's work on The Manor Sessions is great, but I feel Ian and Billy made a huge mistake in getting Rick Rubin to dumb down Peace in order to make Electric. : (
@JonathanRingo4 жыл бұрын
It's only a huge mistake if you don't like Electric, but you can still enjoy the Peace album regardless. Compare them without prejudice and it is clear that one is cluttered and unfocused, one is definitely not. Has nothing in any way to do with dumb, unless of course, you don't like Electric.
@mrscientific49564 жыл бұрын
Preston is really good, but i prefer Les Warner, cos of his rythmic bass drum and snare combinations. But the bass player is great, slapping was rather rare in 80s, so I respecc.
@khorrumg3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Preston was awesome RIP
@SpliffieBee3 жыл бұрын
@@JonathanRingo One could also say that one was full of passion and bombastic, the other was very dry and thinly. IMO a mix of both styles would've made a perfect album.

Billy Duffy = Guitar God - if it weren't for him, I'd never have given up the money for my first car and bought a Gretsch white falcon (his guitar in this video) Jamie's bass-playing was always so smooth and, especially in the early days (death cult/dreamtime) had some great fill-playing - having played guitar in Ritual, it probably came naturally. On that note, I heartily advise checking them out; a sorely forgotten but great early goth band :)

Not everybody likes all eras of The Cult. The Southern Death Cult cassette from '82-83, Dreamtime, Love, Electric, and Sonic Temple are all favourites of mine, and The Cult has a few good tracks on it as well. My taste in music just shifted a bit, and i haven't really dug anything they've done since the early 90's. For anyone to say "anything after Love is shit" is idiotic. You may not like it, but it's not "shit"... Broaden your minds.

Notice the bruise on Astbury's right cheek? Legend has it that Nigel Preston knocked him out during a rehearsal a few days earlier. This must have been about their last TV appearance with Preston, 'cause its just before they recorded "She Sells Sanctuary", and by the time they shot the video for that he was out of the band. Great drummer. RIP.
