The Cult was my first rock concert. I saw them in Lubbock, TX back in 1987. Dangerous Toys and Bohnam were the opening bands. Wow! I can still see the concert in my head like a movie when I hear those songs. Over 20 years after that concert, my band opened up for Broken Teeth (Jason McMaster of Dangerous Toys) at The Deadhorse in San Angelo, TX, and I told Jason the story of how he was the first rock band I had ever seen live when he opened up for The Cult and Bohnam. It was a pretty cool moment in my personal rock history books. Now, 35 years later, I just bought a Gretsch G7593T Billy Duffy Falcon, and came across this video to keep me entertained while I wait on my guitar. Liked and subscribed!

Billy I'm 49 now and it seems like yesterday that I discovered You and Ian . ( THE CULT) It ceases to amaze me how Ya'll keep coming up with really really good songs. A lot of bands would be tickled to have 4_ 5 songs on there albums. A bunch of bands don't have 4 or 5 good songs during their whole career.

Just discovering this guitarist after reading his name a billion times in all sorts of guitar media. He’s an amazing artist. Like a mix between Johnny Marr, Slash, Johnny Ramone and Keef Richards. And the kicker is that what I’ve seen him with is white falcons and les Paul’s. They’re completely different animals! I wonder what the relation must be in his mind. I have a les Paul...

as a younger man I did some work as a roadie. I did Death Cult on one night and coveted Billy's Gretsch. The following night King Kurt were playing. Sitting backstage with them and having a chat with them they got a Gretsch white falcon out of a case. I told them that Bill had been at the venue the night before and he had the same guitar. They said ' oh but mine's better and has gold trim etc and other bits' A bit later they we're on stage...using the guitar as a tennis racket to bat away eggs that were thrown by another band member. Billy would have cried

Billy is a genius. A great guy - and definitely the reason that I now own 5 Gretches including a White Falcon. What confuses me here though is Billy saying that he had to sell his "Theatre of Hate" double cutaway WF to buy the single cutaway - as there are a number of photos of early Death Cult gigs where both guitars are visible on stage. Playing the single cut with the double cut perched on a stand at the side of the stage. One day I'll ask him in person! 😅

Just bought my first (rancher) Gretsch, after over twenty years of lusting after them. Biggest regret was Norm, of Norm's Rare Guitars, offered me a '57 Chet Atkins 6120 with a matching steer horn amp, for something like $2,400. By the time I made up my mind a short time later, they were already around 8k and climbing..

Billy's work on The Cult's early stuff was amazing. That mix of country twang, alt-punk and rock. Some of my favourite ever playing. That said, he's an utterly average rock guitarist which is why The Cult tailed off so hard when they went down that route.

Did Billy just play the riff from the U2 song I Will Follow off their Boy album? ;-) I'm a U2 fan too (early stuff mainly), so I detect a very strong "peer" influence of (U2's guitarist) The Edge in Billy Duffy's playing style. However, Billy Duffy is the perfect combination of The Edge & (AC DC's) Angus Young/Malcolm Young. Not to mention, I'm a die-hard fan of The Cult. ROCK ON! \m/

Yep. My strat would be the first non-living thing I'd go for in a house fire. Doesn't sound odd at all. Those things have personalities as much as my cats. All my guitars have names and respond to me like girlfriends. The only Falcon I ever played was better than sex. If I'd had the 3 grand for it, I'd have totally walked out with it.
