I imagine the difference between the two is yin n yang Chakra. I'd wager given sasuke bein an Uchiha the seal of heaven gives more Yin Chakra whereas kimimaro's abilities seem steeped in taijutsu which given how yang Chakra works it would be more beneficial as it does assist with vitality in some form which we know kimimaro was terminally ill. Honestly after we leaned about sage mode and Gamakichi told Naruto he had to "die" my mind immediately went to the curse mark, as Sakon stating that Sasuke had to "die" to master the curse mark was the first to use that metaphor. And since the confirmation it's a sage ability (I believe Juugo offhandedly called his transformation "sage transformation" several hundred chapters before Kabuto made a big deal out of it) I always thought, the "mind awakening pill" was just an overdosed roofie. After all Sasuke is literally put into a cage in which he cannot die in. Sakon explains that this is what the vessel they put him in does. Fukusaku explained to Naruto you have to sit still to sense natural power. So my best guess for the actual workings of the curse mark is: As you explained, Juugo is permanently drawing in natural energy. And we know since the war arc each CS has a bit of orochimaru in it, kind of like a shadow clone I guess. And Sasuke notes the CS is actually draining his strength so my guess is: Orochimaru is draining physical and spiritual energy from Sasuke and infusing it with natural energy creating OROCHIMARU'S sage chakra not sasuke's. (or whoever recieved it) hence the body's violent fight against the CM. The pill then renders the bearer entirely immobile, to the point where it would actually kill you (like potentially stopping your heart and lungs, that's what happens if you OD a muscle relaxant.) this Od puts the bearer into a state where he can sense natural energy himself and partially understand the curse mark. And that is, whatI think triggers the monstrous transformation of stage two: it's both Orochimaru and the bearer drawing in power via Juugo's enzyme. (Kabuto stated it's a specific enzyme that is similar to the toad oil of mount Myoboku) and thus taking it to far. Stage one is a weakened form of perfect sage mode. Orochimaru is balancing everything correctly. Stage two: the bearer screws everything up for a bigger power boost.

I personally think The Curse Marks is somehow related to the Karma Seal and that Orochimaru knew about the Otsutsuki clan very well. Orochimaru wanted to become Immortal and wanted to have vessels so he can take over the body of the test subject just how Momoshiki is slowing taking over Boruto. And the Reason why Orochimaru created Mitsuki was to become an Otsutsuki so he can be the one to illuminate in the darkness with his Sun (Boruto).

That’s why Orochimaru created Mitsuki in the first place: Remember that episode when Urashiki tried to attack Boruto and he immediately recognized that he was from the Otsutsuki clan? This feat alone tells me that Orochimaru told Mitsuki everything the knows. Thats why Mitsuki is constantly observing Boruto and the Karma Seal, to gather intel, Mitsuki didn’t hesitate and immediately went into his dragon sage mode. Although Urashiki is a waste and the most disgraceful character introduced, he mentioned that Mitsuki has some great powers that even the Otsutsuki don’t have. Sage mode / senjutsu is something critical for the Otsutsuki. Even Shikamaru told Naruto and the rest that Orochimarus intel will help them to defeat the Otsutsuki.

there's more than 2 kinds of seals. heaven and earth are the two mentioned by name but all of the sound four have their own as well. This is referenced by kabuto talking about how sasuke is the only one out of the 6 of them to have the heaven seal which is just as strong as kimmimaro's earth seal. (The two strongest seals). Coming back to video after a long while, a new question popped in my head. Orochimaru sought out so hard for a compatible person, but wouldn’t an Uzumaki been the perfect individual at least for transfer between. They possess an extremely high vitality and chakra reserve so it would seem only natural that- that would be the best direction to look in. Hell he had Karin, but didn’t use her (I understand why, but still). I wouldn’t suggest Naruto because of the rejection of the 9-tails that’s more likely to happen.

I have a theory where Orochimaru knew about the Karma seal and tried to add that to the curse seal, they both give insane power boosts they both change the appearance of the person using it(the more of the karmas power you use the more your appearance changes same with curse seal) and they both allow the person who placed it to reincarnate through that person body.

I got a curse mark of heaven tattoo. I felt like you forgot to mention how each curse mark gives you extra extremities, wings for Sasuke, a tail for kimimaro, fangs for sakon and Ukon, proper horns for tayuya(kidomaru and sakon get more spike like horns and less than tayuya), third eye for kidomaru, and, easily the lamest one, toad-like warts for jirobo maybe his curse ark is closest to toad sage, even seemingly gives him the biggest brute force amp of all curse marks). Im also pretty sure there more than two curse mark as Sasuke (and Anko), Kimimaro and the sound 4 all have different ones. Last thing I feel you forgot to mention is how the hair drastically grows in length and fades into a duller shade of the original color.

Okay so the only real difference between the Cursed Seal's markings is that the normal ones the Sound Four used aren't nearly as powerful as Heaven's which are held by Anko and Sasuke and Earth's which is held by Kimimaro, and based on my observations of both in action, I think I've concluded that Earth is stronger than Heaven at a base level and has some added defensive power to it while also greatly enhancing it's power, while Heaven isn't nearly as strong at first, but it can keep getting stronger the more it's used, which can explain the massive power jumps Sasuke has when using it, it's stated that Cursed Seals in general are around 10x your base with the second stage, but I'd have to be far more than that for Heaven in particular because Sasuke's second stage could equal a one tail cloak of Kurama's cloak, and later on he's compared to a version 2 3-4 tails Kurama cloak on Naruto who should be stronger than he was when they last fought, even with Sasuke's base surpassing multiple Naruto level opponents, 4 tails Naruto is stronger than base Jirayah before the training and would logically be stronger after, and a version 2 cloak is considered about 6 tails of power on top of the amount of tails there is, which just speaks to the absurdity of Orochimaru and how he created such a powerful seal.

If you want more, there are 3 significant things I would like to talk about regarding Orochimaru and his knowledge prior to the beginning of Naruto. First, I'd like to discuss his ultimate goal. Second, There is the first vessel we knew about, Kimimaro Kaguya. Finally, I'd like to dive into the significance of the Curse Mark and it's similarities to the Karma Seal ----------------------- So let's start. On the surface, since the OG Naruto, we've know Orochimaru's goal was to learn every jutsu created and not yet created. He realized his time on earth wouldn't be enough so he found a way to prolong his life via body transfers using someone called a "Vessel" But let's dig a little deeper. At first, It appears as though he just wanted to obtain the Sharingan to make his job of learning jutsu easier from either Itachi or Sasuke. But, we know he had Sharingan's from Shin Uchiha so it wasn't necessarily just to obtain the Sharingan but more so to obtain Uchiha DNA. We also know he had Senju (Hashirama specifically) DNA from Kabuto as he mix it with Madara during the 4th Great Ninja War. I believe Orochimaru's real goal was to obtain a Rinnegan making learning/knowing all jutsu as easy as possible. During OG Naruto there was a time the Rinnegan was just a rumor and it was believed to be the most power Dojutsu derived from the Sage of 6 Paths. There were many rumors about the Rinnegan and both eye dojutsu's was rumored to have been a watered down verison of it at the time. With Orochimaru being as cunning as he is, I don't believe its far-fetched to think he found out that by mixing Uchiha DNA with Senju DNA you can unlock a Rinnegan similar to how Madara Uchiha did before he died the first time. ----------------- Now, lets talk about the first vessel we of, Kimimaro. From his flashbacks, it appears as though Orochimaru just stumbled upon him and decided to make him his student after discovering his abilities. Knowing everything we know about Orochimaru now, I can say that's quite BS. I believe Orochimaru went specifically looking for the "Last Kaguya Clan Survivor" or Kaguya Clan DNA specifically for Edo Tensei (as we know at that time Orochimaru had a beta type version of it not yet perfected like Kabuto's). Because we all know Orochimaru just doesn't select random people, all of them had a kekkei Genkai or something that made them special or unique. It wouldn't be hard since they got genocided trying to attack the Village Hidden in the Mist, right around where he found Kimimaro. What we know about the Kaguya Clan is actually quite alarming as well. They was a Barbaric-type clan that was obsessed with war because of the power they possessed. They acknowledged their strength came from a powerful ancestor who had bone manipulation abilities. (Kaguya Otsutsuki) When a "chosen one" was born with said kekkei genkai, they was sealed in a cage until time came for them to be used. Not necessarily because they cherished their ability either, it was purely out of fear of said individual and the kekkei genkai. I wouldn't doubt Orochimaru obtained that knowledge and was looking for a vessel not only for the kekkei genkai but the ancestry lineage as well. Orochimaru still preferred Kimimaro over Sasuke but due to his illness, had no choice but to stick with Sasuke. ------------------ Finally, we can get into the Curse Mark in OG Naruto. Originally, it was a technique created by Orochimaru to slowly replace one's own chakra with Orochimaru's Chakra as they use the seal thus preparing them for the body vessel transfer. Sounds similar to another Mark we just got introduced to a decade ago? That's exactly how the Karma Seal works but instead of replacing the Chakra, it replaces the actually DNA. But the question is, How did he develop such a technique and where did he get the inspiration from? We know the Uchiha Tablets did fall into Orochimaru and Kabuto's possession and they was able to make an accurate hypothesis based on years of research but there was never an Uchiha using a body transfer jutsu. Now the problem Orochimaru's has is once the vessel transfer is complete, The new body will start to reject him after a while. (Probably because he was re-writing the Chakra instead of re-writing the DNA) I think he purposely chose Chakra instead of DNA because he wanted to keep the Host DNA and Manipulate it to obtain a Rinnegan so it was purposely flawed. Orochimaru was a scientist and historian and and I believe he knew about the history of the Otsutsuki's. I think he thought the So6P was a real person and could be walking the earth today using their Karma. Worst case scenario, he wanted to become strong enough to challenge the So6p and put his own Curse Mark on him to obtain his body. The reason why he didn't do it then is because his body would reject it so he needed Sasuke to be closer lineage. --------------------- This only leads to one thing, Orochimaru made his Curse Seal upon learning about the Karma Seals and his real goal was to obtain a Rinnegan so he can easily learn and create jutsu's without trying. Maybe he was trying to became an Otsutsuki himself? I think maybe he wanted to get Sasuke's body to evolve his Sharingan into (EMS and then) a Rinnegan to become an Otsutsuki but probably changed his mind after he seen what happen to Kabuto, Madara and Kaguya. Now we now this again, because that's the same tablet Madara had read and that's what he tried to do and ended up turning into Kaguya. ‐-------‐------------------------------------ But Kabuto broke the grounds for Orochimaru with his inorganic Reanimation jutsu (isn't Mitsuki made of inorganic material) breathing life into nonliving things. What if Mitsuki is a product of the Sage Art: Inorganic Reanimation Jutsu? Which is why he has Sage Mode without ever having trained for it? And now with Orochimaru's new knowledge he doesn't even need to find another vessel because he is creating Mitsuki using his own DNA making Orochimaru even more invincible than he already was because now of something happens to his body, he can take over Mitsuki's and use 1 of the other 3 he has in storage to go live life with Boruto and get stronger for him in case he needs another body.

Heres a thought about the biting thing: we know that the cursed seal has Orochimaru’s DNA as a core part of the seal. What if there are multiple methods of administering the seal. In a battle, biting the subject while forming the signs might be the most advantageous way to inject the DNA and gain direct contact to place the seal in that chaotic situation. But in a more controlled environment like in one of his many labs, he could simply use needles on a willing/restrained subject hence the various places that these seals seem to show up. The injection can be anywhere, but the seal placement is determined by the contact point of the caster on the subject.

I think his life-force/consciousness IS his chakra. It is Oro sharing his chakra to not only power up his followers, but they become extensions of him. Its like how Muzan from DS shares HIS blood to lower demons for them to become stronger. When the curse seal comfortably adapts to the user’s body, it actually makes their body closer to Oro’s signature thus finally ready for Oro to move in. 9/10 die, and possibly the ones that do make it through may still be too inadaquate. it’s similar to how Jigen wasn’t an ideal vessel for Isshiki, dying some days later. the same probably would happen if oro were to take over anyone. probably the lesser candidate that Oro did end up taking had a shelf life of three years. If not for Itachi intervening, a chakra-depleted sasuke wouldve been taken over by Orochimaru.

Actually there is a difference between the Curse seal of Heaven and Earth.The Cursed Seal of Heaven appears in the strongest of those attuned to spiritual energy and the Cursed Seal of Earth appears in the strongest of those attuned to physical energy.
