I remember reading a book written by a guy that had escaped one of the many “camps” they have there. It was brutal. When he was a child he’d be so starving that him & other kids would have to catch rats to cook & eat. Also he would try to hold in his poop for as long as possible because he thought it would help his stomach to feel more full. This occurred in early 2000’s so it wasn’t that long ago either. Anyone that escaped was instantly killed so he was the only person to escape & tell about it. I wish I could remember the name of that book, I’d love to read it again. *Update: name of the book is called “Escape From Camp 14”, I highly recommend reading this book*

I was in North Korea for a week in 1992 for a "goodwill" visit. During one of the tours, our tour guide proudly pointed out the "still under construction" hotel to us and I asked her when it was going to be completed, she gave me a dirty look and walked away. Another American member of our group laughed and explained to me how it would likely never be completed because of the structural issues (like the crooked elevator shafts).

We live in a disturbing world where a government has so little regard for their own citizens. Like imagine being so poor you are living in poverty while meanwhile your government has hotels full of furniture and empty space that aren't used, unless by random visitors who rarely ever come. It's like being a child in a house where the parents make you live outside in the grass and starve, while people rarely come over and get treated like kings...it's bazar how people get in power who are so neglectful towards those who they're responsible to take care of. Some suffering is good to experience, because it creates empathy towards others experiencing the same or worse suffering. It's probably hard for someone born into the lap of luxury who never experiences harsh living conditions to imagine what others suffer and want to help. Priorities are so important for people in power to have, because people are infinitely more important than things. I wish more people realized that. You know what's better than appearing well off? It's treating people well. Life is not about competing with each other, but helping each other. We all have differences, but not one person is more important than another. Countries are made up of people who are all equally valuable and important. It's delusional to think otherwise. It's cruel to deprive those we're responsible for in exchange for trying to keep up appearances. What good does it do anyways if you just fail miserably in the end? None.

So basically, money that could've been spent on the country to make it better was instead built just to prove "whatever u can do, I can do better". If there was nothing wrong with it and if it was better than the housing the people live in now, I'd say let the people move it at the same cost of rent, to at least give the illusion that the country is better than others, which is what they're trying to give off. As the phrasing goes "a kingdom is not a kingdom without its people", so u can't really call this a hotel unless u have or at least once have had guests staying inside it

Went to North Korea in 2018. When in Pyongyang, the tour bus will only take routes that pass through the 'modern' and 'scenic' parts of the city, which is why we passed by this building umpteen times... we were excited when we saw it the first time, same for the light show at night. Yeah just don’t believe everything defectors say, especially North Korean ones. So many of these “defectors” were proven to be lying or exaggerating because there is just such a good market for Korea bashing in our media. Stories of North Korea are especially absurd because they’re essentially unverifiable. I have no stake in this game but just be skeptical of really convenient narratives. It can be harmful in caricaturizing The country and dehumanizing Korean people. Just recognize that there is an incentive to lie and exaggerate so don’t take every horror story you hear as fact.

It truly saddens, but also disgusts me that such tyrants as Kim Jong-Un become “so called” Leaders and have always led a lavish and expensive life style with absolute total disregard nor a kind thought for the Human Beings who provide it all to him. It also angers me that the rest of the world sit back and allow it to happen. This man and his coadjutants could be permanently eliminated by the rest of the world and a few willing helpers in North Korea if it suited them. It only needs the will and a few moments, but I suspect it suits those other countries to just let him go on being the evil oppressor and despot that he is. My heart goes out to those people doing it tough there. I thank God I was born in a Country like Australia. 🇦🇺

Those items are in short supply and even if they weren't, no one could afford them. The citizens are literally starving to death and living in squalor. The sanctions (well deserved IMO) basically keep everything out except what China and Russia will sell to them - which is probably hard to buy because they are sanctioned by nearly every government on earth save for 4 or so. Even private operations (such as a hostel in Germany) are not allowed to operate and are immediately shut down if the owner(s) are found to be funding the regime. In turn, many countries will not sell or sanction China and Russia so any goods they're buying from these two countries are probably not of great quality.
