i absolutely love the chaos behind these videos, they always bring a smile to my face, and i always enjoy watching system setups that in theory shouldn't work absolutely chug along, this entire channel has a sort of mad scientist vibe to it and i love every minute of it :D

15:44 Alpine doesn't use sudo, it uses doas which basically does the same thing without a bunch of extra functions most people don't even know sudo has

One of the features missing from doas is privilege escalation.

Wish Druaga1 was still doing KZbin. This is also a great channel. Good vibes just like Druaga1! Great job. Hope to see more setups in the future.

My NAS only has one optical drive, the only case fan is powered by jumper wires jammed into a USB header and I currently only have room for 2 drives as I removed the front cage with an extra 2. I still have a lot to learn it seems. Using SFTP over SAMBA for now at least somewhat exceeds this.

For my NAS I use Proxmox, it's not intended to be used as a NAS OS but it's just Debian underneath do I can manage my files and share using the command line and then use the Proxmox features like the nice web GUI for managing virtual machines.

The screws are similar to both older Apple hardware, and Compaq. as for the SSD Icy-Dock makes a tool-less 2.5 to 3.5 converter, mine has room for two 2.5 SSD/Sata drives.

you should take a look at ceph, it has erasure code by default unlike zfs and raid, is way easier to expand disk-wise or node-wise. although it's harded to setup since it's thought out for f-ing data centers

but why go with a old HP with 3 slots when you can get a old gaming case that can hold a dozen or so? And have even more options like more fan bays and take a larger board? And don't forget the old school rails option of using the 5 1/2 bay for a floppy but substituting a 3.5 inch hdd instead, that works too., after all there is some early Core i series that can have up to 16 hdds without a expansion card, and there's a AM3+ with up to 24 sata hdds. Imagine THAT combination for a NAS, just hunt for motherboards with more sata slots or that come with sata expansion cards.

Btw I honestly run Arch on a laptop-server. It's 3rd gen mobile intel but idle power consumption is great because it's a laptop.

My orignal NAS was an AM3 2 core CPU paired with 8GB of RAM and 3 1.5TB WD Green HDDs. This was a PC I pulled from the trash and had to zip tie the CPU cooler on, it SUCKED. My new NAS is also from the trash, but this one's a rackmount server. I can proudly say I have acidently hit my server with my car. Twice.

I don't see anything wrong in your setup though. Alpine is just lightweight and functional, your CPU is enough (and NASes don't need too much specs) and having a superb machine for NAS, thinking for work 24/7, is just massive overkill and a crazy energy consumption. Also that case is well designed for the purpose.
@darth_dan8886
@darth_dan8886 4 ай бұрын
It defo feels overkill. Especially physical volume wise XD Neither power, size, nor storage efficient... But it's a NAS!..
