one of my favourite exchanges with a cyberman is in the tenth planet: Polly: Don't you care?! Cyberman: Care? No, why should I care? Polly: Because they're people and they're going to die! Cyberman: I do not understand you. There are people dying all over your world, yet you do not care about them. i think it's quite a stark yet somewhat profound observation. i feel that often the cybermen's potential gets severely mishandled story wise, which is a shame.

Yeah. We were supposed to see the Cybermen as bad guys because they have no concept of emotions, but at the same time they also made us think about how flawed and inconsistent human emotions can be, and actually gave us a very good understanding of why they wanted that part of the brain removed. That is why I HATED when they turned them into the generic "Hahaha I want to take over the universe!" super villains. The original Cybermen were not into galactic conquest. All they wanted was to evolve and survive, and the only thing that made them evil were their over-logical thinking.

Lee Goodman Matt Savage, the designer of the NuWho's Daleks, also did his own design of the Cybermen (though that design was never actually used in the series, and I don't think he was even commissioned to officially redesign the Cybermen in the first place), heavily drawing the various 60s Cybermen designs. That's probably my favorite design ever, you should really check it out.

I really like the Cybermen in Earthshock, which I think is partly down to David 'Excellent' Banks' portrayal as the Cyber Leader. However, I think my favourite version of the Cybermen is the design used from The Moonbase and The Tomb of the Cybermen, because they are just so creepy. The plain robotic voices, the blank face, etc. But also, what helps to make these Cybermen even more scary in the Troughton era is that they're entirely in black and white, which creates a lot of atmosphere around them.

My favourite Cybermen will always be the Troughton era cyberchaps. They evoke such strong memories for me. Not just from the TV stories, but also from so many comic strips of the time. 2nd Doctor + Jamie + Cybermen = bliss. :)

Aren't the Telosian Cybermen different to Mondas? Or did the Mondasian ones move to Telos after Mondas was destroyed?

Officially, they are the same Cybermen from Mondas. I'm pretty sure Colin Baker clears it up in "Attack of the Cybermen" - it revolves around the events of The Tenth Planet (which is Mondas), but part of it takes place on Telos.

Cyberman history is complicated. There were a group of cybermen on Mondas who were known as the cyber faction, they believed in fully upgrading their bodies, whereas the mondasion ones retained some human traits. The faction left Mondas by themselves before Mondas came to take over the earth. The faction were the ones we see in the invasion I believe and inhabit "planet 14". The faction itself then split into two groups, the ones who conquered and built the tombs on telos, and the cyber nomads who chose to travel the galaxy. The nomads are the ones we see in revenge of the cybermen . Eventually after ages the cyber nomads find the telos cybermen frozen in their tombs and they combine into one group again, known as cyber neomorphs. These ones are the ones we see in earthshock and attack of the cybermen. Of course were not sure if this is all canon since its from a novel, but it's the only thing we have.

If the Time Lords voluntarily upgraded their bodies to become like cybermen, then they'd have no trouble incorporating the regeneration process into the upgrade itself. If they were forcibly upgraded, then they could fight it, but if they signed up for it then that's a whole different story.

I really feel, very passionately, that you could update the Cybermen and make them very "Now" without turning them into robots. I've put a lot of effort into it already, and there's designs out there like Matt Savage as well. The way they're handled in 21st century Doctor Who, from the designs to the backstory to the writing, has always rubbed me the wrong way. Like nobody at the BBC really "get" the Cybermen and aren't that interested in them, they're just second-rate Daleks who need to look more metal and have catchphrases to have the same appeal. Imagine doing that to the Slitheen or the Ice Warriors or Weeping Angels or Zygons. Just full armour from head to toe and spewing catchphrases. Imagine a world where the cloth masks from The Tenth Planet were never lost in any other story. The bodies change and the headpieces and jug handles can change a lot, but keeping the same cloth mask, and it becomes an iconic part of their design. So just like the Daleks, they have an identity that can't be messed with or thrown away. Instead of a fully robotic suit of armour, or just metal all over, if they were always rubber and cloth and plastic and white blood and moving jaws and signs of their lost humanity. That's more interesting from a design point of view as well as from a storytelling one. And I don't mean to say any of the other classic Cybermen costumes are bad, far from it, but I'm losing interest in seeing Cybermen with helmets anymore. I want to see more human bits on display. They don't *NEED* to replace every single fiber of their bodies with metal. Why not grow artificial body parts biomechanically? Why not clone human bodies for themselves in order to reproduce? Why not replace bits and pieces of themselves like the Borg? And if Paramount ever sue the BBC, the BBC should counter sue Paramount for stealing THEIR idea. Technically they didn't, but both lawsuits would be equally ridiculous. *“Question: you take a broom, you replace the handle, and then later you replace the brush. And you do that, over and over again. Is it still the same broom? Answer: no, of course it isn’t, but you can still sweep the floor. You have replaced every piece of yourself, mechanical and organic, time and time again. There’s not a trace of the original you left. You probably can’t even remember where you got that face from.”* *THAT*'s the new series Cybermen. That's why I don't like them. There's literally nothing human left, and nothing to connect to emotionally. Rise of the Cybusmen/The Age of Steel and Dark Water/Death in Heaven had the right idea in showing us humans who were converted, but they can't do that in every story. They need a design that has a bigger impact on viewers. They can't just be metal suits or stomping robots. I dunno, I can't win with Doctor Who. If I'm totally against something in the new series, I feel like a pariah and a grump. If I like something in the new series, it usually gets torn apart by critics and I feel dumb for not noticing things that are flawed. I don't want to sound like someone who's stuck in the past and hates change, because I know the problem can be fixed and Doctor Who is all about change. But some things need to stay vaguely the same or else it doesn't work. It needs an identity.

Calling them "replacement daleks" seem like an insult when talking about the 60's Cybermen. Think about their plan in "Tomb of The Cybermen", where they let themselves be put into deep freeze and make sure that in order to free them, one must pocess a superior intelligence. That way they were able to store themselves, prolonging their lives AND make sure that those who woke them up would be intelligent enough to become a powerful new breed of Cybermen. The Daleks would NEVER have had the patience or intelligence to do that.

One thing that has kept the Cybermen cyborgs is that in order to create more, regardless of upgrading themselves further and further, they still are made from humans or humanoids and organic beings. So there are still organics inside the Cybermen - be it the brain, heart, or other organic components needed to function.

I'd love to see the 10th Planet era Cybermen meet the modern Cybermen, or perhaps the Cybus Cybermen meeting the modern incarnation of the Mondasian Cybermen. I guess they are worried regular viewers would be too confused but it would be so interesting to see and it should be explainable pretty easily.

Neil Gaiman had an ending planned for "Nightmare In Silver" that would've had one lone Cybermite escape the planet after the carnage and find itself on another, where it would have been in a room with older Cybermen (with its defacto leader being a 10th Planet Cyberman!), giving them an intelligence report on The Doctor.....

One thing that has bugged me is why the cyber men in early Moffett era ('Pandorica opens' 'a good man goes to war') who are indicated to be Modas ones look like the Cybus ones. Obviously production reason was cheap reuse of props, but story wise? Did Modas cyber men meet Cybus ones and adopt their design? Would love to see that story.

Can someone explain the Cybermen situation now? I think that from A Good Man Goes to War onwards, we now have the Mondasian Cybermen back because of their lack of Cybus logo. So am I correct in assuming the Cybus Cybermen are gone?

So I am re-posting a comment (Now with link) and I couldn't find the original to delete it and send it to this more relevant location. Anyway it is about an escaped captain from the Galifreyan military arrives in the middle of a battle between humans and the Cyberiad remnant (Sometime after getting infected by a fungus from another dimension). Warping a sergeant by accident in the battle from his TARDIS (Type 58 and has a working chameleon circuit. Ohhhhh how rare) by the door being open while the sergeant is looking for cover. He runs off when a Cyberman notices him. To put it short he gets mad at the soldier being a stowaway. Captain regenerates after infection gets to his heart (Plot missing between need help with it). Soldier gets cyber-converted and the captain has to save him. Being a cyberman with emotions the captain has to keep him in check all while taking on a huge dalek civil war. So, enough talking here is the first page and link to edit: Admiral Dean! Sir! Do you read? This is Sergeant Asread stationed on patrol satellite tower six do you read?!” said Asread. “What seems to be the problem Sergeant? It better not be another petty theft,” replied Dean sarcastically. “Sir, its urgent! Whats coming is not to be made fun of,” shouted Asread into his com. “Okay, okay… What seems to be the issue?” “Sir, we have incoming unidentified ships. No ships have been permitted to enter at this time. They are currently in the upper atmosphere. Sir we could be falling under attack!” Asread said in a quickened tone. “Calm down soldier! This isn’t that big of a deal. Open a channel. It’s most likely a lost cargo fleet that miss jumped. Redirect them,” replied Dean. “Yes sir I’ll see what I can do. Over and out,” said Asread. “Over and out Sergeant,” replied Dean as he cut the transmission. “Morgan,” said Asread. “Yes sir,” replied Morgan. “Open a link I want to see who these people are face to face,” said Asread. “Yes Sir,” said Morgan typing in the transmission data. Suddenly, the screen flared up the image was blurry but they could make out a human silhouette. “Hello! I am Sergeant Asread of the Alliance of Earth. You are in orbit above a military only planet. We will give you full instructions on how to leave our shield system. Do you read?” asked Asread. The image cleared slowly from out of the shadows the stuff of nightmares came out. The man that used to be. A man stuffed inside of a metallic suit. No humanity, no emotions. It’s cold eye gleamed at the crowd of gasping soldiers and engineers. Not one person could say a thing they were all still. No movements whatsoever. Everyone acted as cold and lifeless as the being they were staring at. “I thought they went extinct! You know during the Hedgewick's Crisis,” said one officer. “Well clearly we were wrong. If only Dean could see this he was at that battle. One of the only survivors,” said another. “Cybus the returns again,” said Morgan. “Cybus these are clearly from Mondas and Telos,” said another soldier. “Silence. We are the cybermen. You will be converted and join our ranks. You will become equal. You will become like us,” said the Cyber-Planner. “No way in hell! The Cybermen are what our ancestors fought! You think we will not get our vengeance! Stories have been passed down we have not forgotten! My ten great grandfather was converted and killed six of the men in his platoon before being blown to bits! This story has been passed down through all my families generations. We will fight! Who is with me!?” yelled Asread as a rallying cry. The room went silent. Everyone was paralyzed with fear after the Cyber-Planner spoke. “Vengeance is irrelevant, grief is irrelevant, fear is irrelevant. We will take your emotions and you will be free,” said the Cyber-Planner. Is the Cybermen in Nightmare in Silver not the Mindasian Cybermen. Im sure that it was stated in the episode. It appears the alternate timeline cybermen have been gone from the series for a while now...Anyone else agree or can add to this?

UPDATE: From a Good man goes to war onwards is supposedly the return of the monasian Cybermen as it is after the cyber wars which they took part in. Therefore the alternate universe cybermen have been gone for longer...

JCtitanic15, I think the original Cyberman had some but very controlled emotions as for them improving over the years I think it's down to the cyber planners looking at their current form and working out what would be a improvement. And I think the current ones are a mixed of both Cybermen.

The cyber-planners also yes they have to have emotions I mean the doctor in Nightmare in Silver still had emotions in his Cyber-Planner form. That shows that not all emotions are inferior to the cybermen. But most are.
