Everyone in every generation likes to say they're "breaking the cycle" but 99% of the time, they end up either acting just like their parents, going the opposite extreme and traumatizing their kids another way, or being only slightly less toxic but still mostly the same. If more people were self-aware and put ourselves in our kids' shoes, then that leftover 1% can grow bigger. All we can do is hope this will be the case.

My mom wasn’t treated badly but her dad had to go the hospital when she was ten because he got Alzheimer’s and she never saw him again then 4 years later he died. My grandmother on my moms side was from England and lived there during the war so her house got bombed and she was forced to move away from her parents later she had very serious PTSD. My grandfather on my moms side (yes the same one that got Alzheimer’s) lost his entire family (even his 1 year old brother) during the war and he was forced to join the army luckily he survived but as I said earlier in my comment he did die of Alzheimer’s and last but not least my moms oldest brother died at 2 months old so my family went through a lot (namely grief and suffrage) just not abuse or narcissism.

The cycle in my family is pretty clear: The firstborn gets used, abused emotionally, and kicked out of the house at 18. It happened to me, my father, and my grandfather. One by one. I am raising my child in a household devoid of violence and with mutual respect. I am breaking the cycle. Therapy was a must for my father and for myself. The reverse cycle is working. I started therapy first and reconnected with my father who then started therapy to cope with being unable to reconnect with his father. We are healing our family.

@Daydream_10182 жыл бұрын
My siblings and I still plan to have kids, we plan to go easier on them than our parents did with us, make sure they know they're loved and a negative thought never crosses their mind Edit: Okay, before I get anymore stupid comments telling me shit I already know. My intention is to raise my kids knowing that they're loved while not giving a damn about what anybody says to them, my parents have always compared me to them when they were younger and talked down on me just because I didn't have to put up with as much as they did, but I actually AM because they're the ones I'm putting up with, making me feel like shit, I will *NEVER FUCKING EVER* make my child feel as worthless and hurt as me, I will give my life to make sure they never have thoughts of hurting themselves or if I don't love them, I'll never make them feel like the world would be better off without them... But I'll still make sure nothing a stranger says to them, or a friend, or a toxic family member will get to them, I'll make sure they are emotionally strong and confident, and yes, I'm aware that life will get to them, but it happens, it happens to everyone, we can't control it, but I will be there and make sure they are comfortable enough to talk about what they are feeling and know they have a shoulder to cry on, and because someone said it *YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE HARD ON YOUR KIDS TO TOUGHEN THEM UP* .... THAT'S ABUSE... As a parent, it's your JOB and RESPONSIBILITY to love and care for your child and never put them down because you're not happy or satisfied with the way things are going... Children who know they're loved and secure, and you've talked with as they grew will not go doing something stupid you disapprove of... Being raised with 6 siblings and mentally abusive parents who fail to speak to their kids, I've watched it 3 times now, it DOES work that way and it's on YOU to prevent it from happening. I'm probably gonna get a shit ton of hate, but idc, I may not have kids, but I've watched enough of my siblings grow up and become depressed and broken (myself included), and know what could've been done to prevent that, I'd take my knowledge and time travel with it to help my parents be better. People look down on younger generations for being the way they are, but for over half, it's their parents to blame. I'm not gonna be that parent, never
@innovativeberry60982 жыл бұрын
That's not as easy as it sounds. When you grow older, you're ideals and emotions change and when you see your child that you've raised so hard does dumb stuff, it is natural to feel pissed. I told my mom I’d keep my last name since I’m a family of all girls, and she said it doesn’t matter because her grandkids won’t even be related to her. It may hurt her, but it won’t hurt worse than the way that hurt me because I’m adopting 6 kids and having none of my own
@Punkinkat2 жыл бұрын
She shouldn’t care if they’re blood related. That doesn’t matter at all. Love and family is what’s important! I want to (far in the future) adopt an “unadoptable” kid. Kids after 11 get that title in some places because parents want to raise a baby. I only care about giving a kid a place to call home.

But we gotta remember that most people try to do better than their parents, and so while someone’s parents may abuse them, they might not even realize it because they think they are doing better than their parents. Obviously not an excuse to abuse, but just keep in mind that they may be trying at least.
