The D&D movie breaks druids - here’s why

I know everybody's going off about the Owlbear, but that's tied to her backstory, as explored in the novelization. It's that 7-shapes-in-as-many-minutes that would REALLY break the game!

Yeah, I was like "how high level is she?" Before ultimately deciding it didn't matter and acknowledging, as Ginny said, it's a fun sequence, who cares. Similarly, there's a moment where a caster probably should have been aware they were counterspelled, RAW, but it was a fun moment, and it doesn't need to strictly adhere to the rules, it just needs to capture the vibe of playing DnD, which I think it did rather well.

Most importantly, it felt like D&D. the nonsense the party got up to was believably stuff players would come up with. The player setting off the trap midway through the explanation and then the DM making up another way for them to get across because crap, I didn't have a plan for what to do if they fail at this ("Um, sorcerer, roll Arcana. 8? I actually think the party was at level 17 and Doric was using Shapechange (she’s limited in what she can turn into because of her sheltered upbringing). Simon had access to some pretty high leveled spells and seemed pretty certain he could Counterspell the Time Stop indicating he had a 9th level slot. Also Ed may be credited as a Bard but he took the Valor Bard subclass at level 3 and then went Mastermind Rogue the rest of the way.

According to their statblocks on d&d beyond they're all CR5 except for Xenk, and they're not direct 1:1 equivalents to normal character classes. Occasionally I grant druids one or two additional transformations (dependant) whenever that wouldn't involve them exhausting themselves and only outside combat etc since it gives them more options for solving problems with flavour and creativity whilst the rest of the party are sprinting at the speed of sound across the map, reading peoples minds etc. I've seen the table really enjoy it when the druid used it to mess with an npc and frame someone for something hilarious. It's then that they realised they didn't need combat to solve every confrontation or quest and started gelling as a group. You can also give them the option for an extra transformation in a dire situation but only into a small/tiny creature if you want a more combat based house roll, basically if they fail to escape and regroup after that they have so few hp that the enemy can one hit them but it gives them and the party a small chance to survive the encounter.

My DM and fellow player who I went to see the film with spent the e tire car ride home pointing out all the little inaccuracies 😂😂😂 But we had the same exact thought about all of them that you expressed here: We didn’t mind!! The movie did a good job of showing off and making a film out of the game mechanics, even if they weren’t exactly accurate. They still payed homage to all the fun times we as players and DMs remember from all our games ❤️ The first one I can think of off the top of my head is the Speak with Dead. They made it 5 questions like a Contact Other Plane, even though Speak with Dead is one of the few where you just get to chat infinitely in the 1 minute or 10 minutes or whatever it is that the duration is! But that shows off the funny quirky flavor of so many other DnD spells like Contact Other Plane that have those “arbitrary numbers” involved, while using a much more lower-level and accessible spell that keeps the energy of the movie at a good place early on. Like, they couldn’t exactly have them contacting an Archdevil to ask a question 30 minutes in 😂😂😂 Also the Wildshape!!! She transforms into an Owlbear which isn’t a Beast, so for Wildshape or polymorph it would be impossible!! OH and a bonus one which was weirdly very specifically accurate 😂 The Paladin!!! First scene with him, he is seen talking to a fish and gently calming it down to get it to cough up the tabaxi child. And the first thing I thought was “Umm, Speak with Animals or Dominate Beast or whatever isn’t on the Paladin list”. BUT THEN LATER when he is about to leave the party, he gives this whole speech that starts with “I remember the Tenets of the Ancients” and I went “HEY!!! An Oath of the Ancients Paladin is all about protecting nature; they totally have spells like that on their list!!!!” And sure enough, Ancients Paladins so get Speak with Animals! So that one is weirdly nichely quite accurate when it totally didn’t have to be 😂

Since her primary wildshape is the owlbear I didn't mind she used multiple ones during the escape sequence as it was just flavorful.

I totally agree. Dorics excessive wild shape was the only thing that I couldn't say was a direct mechanic in the game that worked one to one, but they did it for the right reason. And overall I loved the movies so It still works and is fun

Couldn't agree more! That scene was SO much fun. It wouldn't have been nearly as exciting if she only wild shaped twice, or remained a fly.

Also to note is that Doric (iirc) doesn't use any other magic. This was probably so a viewer that's not familiar with DnD wouldn't get confused by all of the differences between how different classes can cast magic, but it also lets you explain it away by just saying "well, this was a homebrew circle for the druid. They were allowed to cast wildshape at will and with less restrictions on what they transformed to, but they gave up being able to use any other spells." At the end of the day, DnD is a collaborative storytelling game, the rules are there to give guidance and help the story flow but they shouldn't get too much in the way of the story itself.

They released the character sheets on DnD Beyond and it's not even technically Wild Shape anymore. She has a custom ability called Change Shape. Fun homebrew, lol.

There's a possibility that Doric is using the spell animal shapes which would allow her to change into different animals as an action on each turn

Personally, I've been running a rule that allows you to use spell slots to wlld shape since watching the movie, it makes sense considering Doric never actually casts any other spells lol

After we watched the movie my dad said "I want to be whatever that girl who shifted into like 20 things when we finally play." My grandfather said something along the lines of 'I don't think you can actually do that, I'm definitely no expert but it seemed unrealistic even for d&d' and my grandmother was just there like I'd probably be able to the d&d people were shocked about all the 'nat 20s' I was rolling. She's probably right I'd cave if her level were high enough and she rolled another 5 nat 20s in row.

Pretty sure Simon is channeling 2 concentration spells when Ed and Holga find him at the tavern. The half cast of blur is one, and then whatever ongoing spell that is collecting all the coins and trinkets. Both of these dispel when he sees Ed in the back, which could have been him taking psychic damage and failing the concentration check or just losing control of both out of shock.

The way Time Stop worked was very different, but also cooler than the 5e Time Stop. Attunement was different but way more cinematic and a nice way to do that. The things they changed in the mechanics made a lot of sense. And I'm glad they stuck as close to the rules as they did so that you got to see different things that are hallmarks of D&D like an owlbear even if druids can't usually shift into them.

I was waiting for someone to bring up that scene, I liked it a lot but I was waiting for someone in the audience to call it out, the biggest things that I feel like I would have enjoyed seeing (maybe in a potential series or sequel since they've talked about them) would be to have Dorick and Edgin be spellcasters like their classes in the game are, I appreciate it. The focus on the druids wild shape, but I also really would have liked to see her cast some spells alongside Simon, I also feel like they were pushing Edgin as a bard really hard in all of the promotional material, but after watching the movie, he feels a lot more like a rogue, specifically a mastermind after his multiple rants about how much he plans things out, and the fact that he didn't cast any spells or do anything that seemed very similar to bardic inspiration.

In one of my games I allowed a player playing as a moon druid to change into a new animal by expendind a spell slot. Their current shape's HP carried over to the new shape (unless the base HP of the new shape was lower), but they could still use combat wild shape HP recovery. They just wanted to be able to shape into animals a lot and didn't care about casting spells.

This scene made me want to homebrew Wild Shape: instead of 2 per rest, which last for half your druid level in hours, you get to wild shape a number of total hours equal to your druid level. So, it's the same duration, but you have more flexibility, allowing you to turn into 7 forms within a short time frame

Which is why I honestly would want to change wildshape rules to where you have at max 8 slots or so. But the kicker is that each slot is worth 1/4th cr. If you want higher CR, then you have to do more slots spent. If you are moon druid, you get more slots. Total number by normal druid rules would be to CR 1 Twice. (Forgot if base druids go to two or not)
