I am a naturalized US citizen(previously German) . if I were to switch back to German/EU citizenship, is it easier to move to Portugal (without a visa?) or is a visa still required? Thanks

You don't need a visa as an EU citizen. So, yes, being an EU citizen makes life easier for moving and renewals are less frequent. Of course, it depends how difficult re-obtaining German citizenship would be if you renounced it. If it's going to take more than a few months, moving to Portugal on a D-visa like the D7 or D8 might be the easier option.
