In the Soviet Union, dachas (a tiny piece of land) were given to factory workers so that they would not starve to death and could still get at least some food for themselves. I was a child and I remember all this. Damn the communists.

I agree. If I had that kind of money I'd be wanting to either preserve an older building and the environment at the same time or do something not so generic at that level. That's down to the client. This building's function is to pay for itself. The design concepts are over a hundred years old now at least. Still, the architects did solve several problems in textbook fashion to satisfy the brief, which is their main job. Can't help thinking that several more invested locals had their views diminished with this building going up.
