Ian Scott from Anthrax in an interview said : "Tony Iommi wrote every riff there was to write, and everything that came after was just a derivative of it in some way, shape or form. But, for me, it all started with BLACK SABBATH". Tony is genius and even with his "disability" he managed to rock everyone out and arguably set the bases for any kind of metal, but we don't have to forget Geezer and Bill Ward even though he sadly doesn't get enough recognition. All Black Sabbath albums from the 70s are sacred. Effectively it was the band that created Heavy Metal. Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple also helped to create this musical style, but Sabbath is the main band in this regard. Sabbath: extraordinary excellence in every way.
@dylanadams14552 жыл бұрын
all of the stylistic things that make metal metal, come from Tony Iommi. I hear people crediting Deep Purple and Zep too, and I love those bands, but they're just not metal. There's nothing much in those bands where you go, "that's metal, metal bands do that all the time". Tritones (other than a passing blue note), galloping palm muted pedal riffs, downtuning. It's all Sabbath. The only thing I can think of that's metal where I can't think of a Sabbath song that uses it is using the minor second interval. When Zep got heavy it was usually in Bonham's beat, not the riffage.
@fabiolignelli73722 жыл бұрын
@@dylanadams1455 You are totally right. Iommi is the true creator of Metal. His genius and influence is immeasurable. I like countless bands of various styles of metal, including the most extreme ones, but Sabbath has always been my favorite and Iommi has always been my favorite guitarist. In the 80's I loved and still love bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Venom, Bathory, etc, etc, etc. But Sabbath has always been at the top of the game and always will be.

@vladdrakul78512 жыл бұрын
@@dylanadams1455 ''When Zep got heavy it was usually in Bonham's beat, not the riffage.'' Sorry but that is simply wrong. As for influences on Sabbath both Geezer Butler and Ozzy both say that after Led Zep I came out they all 'spent months on our backs, stoned, listening to Zep I over and over'. In what world are Zep not classic heavy riffers? 'Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Immigrant Song, Achilles Last Stand etc etc etc are not heavy riffers? Really?? Are you deaf?! It may be true that Sabbath are the first truly pure Metal Band in that they stuck with it but Zep, though more diverse and progressive by nature, were the first band doing Metal SONGS. For we metal fans back then (ie before it became known as 'metal' in the MSM) Zep were the first and with their atypically slow 'Dazed and Confused' shared similar dark chords and sluggish doomy atmosphere to Sabbaths early classics. I love Slayer and KYUSS both massive Sabbath fans ! Dave Lombardo is rightly a massive Bonham fan and yes he really is the best drummer ever IMHO and Zeppelins ace in the hole!

You're correct on that. I can't find the interview now, but Tony has talked about this and they started tuning down around this time to help ease the strain on Ozzy's voice. He then said it didn't work, because Ozzy just started singing higher! Looking at live boots from around this tour they had been tuning down various amounts from show to show - half-step down, whole step down, and of course they eventually settled on three half-steps by the time they recorded MoP. I didn't realise that you were unfamiliar with the origins of the band. It was Tony's final day at work when he was asked to cover for an absent colleague and use a cutting machine. This was when he cut his fingertips off. He constructed false tips himself by melting down plastic bottles but because of the pain caused by pressing the guitar strings he experimented with lower tunings to reduce the string tension. Another interesting little fact you may not be aware of is that Tony was briefly a member of Jethro Tull. He didn't stay long (he can be seen playing with them in the film of "the rock n roll circus" ) but he was so impressed with Ian Anderson's work ethic, he went back to Sabbath and made the band practice rigorously and develop a more professional approach to their playing.
