[Transcript 1/3] Hello, welcome to the Daily Moth! It is Monday, August 27. Ready for news? --- Two Killed in Mass Shooting at Jacksonville Video Game Tournament Yesterday (Sunday) there was a mass shooting in Jacksonville, Florida during a Madden NFL video game tournament at the Jacksonville Landing, which is an outdoor space with restaurants, bars, and stores. The gunman, David Katz shot and killed two people, Eli Clayton and Taylor Robertson. He also shot and injured nine others. He then turned the gun on himself, killing himself. Katz is from Maryland and was one of the people playing the the tournament. The winner of the tournament would win a $5,000 cash prize and then go to a bigger tournament in Las Vegas for a $125,000 prize. Witnesses say Katz lost in the tournament and was eliminated. He left the area to get a gun from his car and came back to do the shooting. Right before the shooting started, there was a live streaming video of two players, with one of them Eli Clayton, who is one of the two who died. You can see a red laser dot on Eli right before the shooting started. The video didn’t show them being hit by gunshots. After it showed the laser dot, the video switched to show the game, but there were sounds of gunfire and people screaming. The video showed an alert that the controllers were disconnected. That was during the shooting. It is not known if the laser dot was from the gun or not. The FBI and ATF went to a home in Baltimore, Maryland where Katz is thought to live with one of his parents. The investigation is ongoing. It appears Katz struggled with mental health issues. Now the gaming community is mourning the deaths of Eli and Taylor. Eli was 22, from Southern California, and considered one of the top Madden players with $51,000 in career winnings. He was a star high school football player. Taylor was 27, from West Virginia, a successful gamer with over $80,000 in career winnings. He leaves behind a wife and son. heavy.com/news/2018/08/david-katz-bread-ravenschamp/ www.cnn.com/2018/08/27/us/jacksonville-shooting-victims/index.html www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/bs-md-jacksonville-david-katz-08272018-story.html --- Senator John McCain Passes Away at 81 Senator John McCain passed away on Saturday afternoon in Arizona from brain cancer. He was 81, would have turned 82 this week. His family announced the day before (Friday) that he was stopping medical treatment. McCain first announced he had brain cancer - an aggressive kind of cancer called glioblastoma - in July 2017. After his family announced his death, John’s wife Cindy tweeted that her heart was broken. She said she is so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years. John’s daughter Meghan also tweeted after his death, saying she was with her father at his end, just like he was with her at her beginning. Together at birth and death. There was a black hearse with a motorcade of police and government vehicles that went to his ranch in Arizona. When they left and drove on the highway, there were many people who watched the motorcade, stopping their vehicles to pay their respects. John McCain planned his own funeral. This Wednesday, he will lie “in state,” (with full honors) in the Arizona State Capitol. On Thursday he will be transported to a church in Phoenix for a memorial service. After that, he will be flown to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, on Thursday night. On Friday, John McCain will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol with a ceremony and people visiting. On Saturday, there will be a memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. On Sunday, John will be buried for his final resting place at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This is what will happen this week. There are news reports that former Presidents Obama and Bush will give eulogies for McCain for the Saturday service at the National Cathedral. There are also reports that the McCain family did not want President Trump to attend. We know that Trump and John McCain did not have a good relationship, as Trump mocked John for being captured in war, and John’s famous “thumbs down” vote in Senate that stopped Republicans’ hopes of repealing Obamacare. President Trump tweeted a brief statement after John’s death, saying his deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Fox News reported that President Trump stopped the release of an official White House statement that would have praised John McCain, calling him a hero. Trump stopped this, and there is no statement from the White House. So this means the feud between the two continues even after John’s death. Who was John McCain? He was born in 1936 into a military family, with his father an Admiral. When he was 22, he served in the Navy and went into war in Vietnam. His plane was shot down and as he parachuted down, he was captured by enemy Vietnamese soldiers, becoming a prisoner of war for five years. He became a Congressman in 1982, then a U.S. Senator in 1987. In 2008, he ran for President on the Republican side and lost to Obama. People often call John a “maverick,” for speaking his mind and being willing to go against the Republican party on certain issues. So he is a maverick. There is some criticism on his hawkish, warlike mentality - that he would often advocate for the U.S. to go into wars in foreign countries. John was married twice and is a father of seven children. Many world leaders issued statements showing their respect including the French President, Israel’s PM, Germany’s Chancellor, Canada’s PM, Taiwan’s President, and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister. The world has honored him. Top Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said he wants to rename a Senate building - the Russell Senate Office Building - in John’s name to honor him. heavy.com/news/2018/08/john-mccain-dead-death-died-dies/ www.ajc.com/news/national/john-mccain-funeral-senator-honored-three-cities/OGlW7LnLepSnrnr49zLXqI/ www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/08/27/trump-decided-against-white-house-statement-praising-mccain.html www.dw.com/en/world-leaders-pay-tribute-to-us-senator-john-mccain/a-45232718 --- Update on Tropical Storm Lane Hurricane Lane was downgraded to a tropical storm over the weekend, and never actually hit land, but Hawaii still saw record amounts of rainfall. Between 2 to 4 feet of rain fell on Hawaii over the weekend, and the Big Island reported at least 51 inches of rain in 48 hours. That ranks as the third-highest rain total from a tropical cyclone in the US since 1950. The third highest rainfall. Widespread flooding and landslides forced evacuations and has caused damage to a lot of homes. 39 people were rescued, but no storm-related deaths have been reported. Forecasters say another hurricane may be on the horizon. A tropical storm has developed off the coast of Baja, California, moving west, and is expected to stay that course for a few days. The storm ‘Miriam’ may turn into a hurricane by late Monday or early Tuesday. www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/photos-hawaii-endures-devastating-flooding-as-lane-drops-third-highest-us-tropical-rain-total/70005887 www.cbsnews.com/news/tropical-storm-miriam-path-track-latest-weather-forecast-hawaii-today-2018-08-27-live-updates/ [Transcript continues below]

[Transcript 2/3] Homeless Vet Claims Fraud Against Philly Couple Who Raised $400,000 for Him GoFundMe has launched an investigation into a homeless veteran’s accusations of fraud against a Philadelphia couple who raised $400,000 for him. In October 2017, Kate McClure ran out of gas while on a freeway in Philadelphia. Johnny Bobbitt, the homeless veteran, happened to be standing nearby as she ran out of gas. He gave his last 20 dollars on gas for McClure’s car. McClure, touched by his kindness, first came back with food and supplies, but decided to start a GoFundMe page for Bobbitt. She was hoping to raise at least $10,000, but the story became viral, and within a few months the campaign raised more than $400,000. Both McClure and Bobbitt appeared on Good Morning America and the BBC for interviews. McClure said the plan was to get Bobbitt back on his feet, get him a house and his dream truck. Bobbitt also planned to donate money to organizations and people who had helped him as he struggled with homelessness. Pictures showed Bobbitt spending Christmas at McClure’s house. But instead of a house, McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, gave him a camper and a used SUV, which was parked on land owned by the boyfriend’s family. The SUV and the camper were in their names. They also bought him a television, a laptop, cellphones, food and clothing, but Bobbitt claimed he never officially took ownership of the $400,000 that was supposed to be for him. The boyfriend said he put $200,000 - what was left after buying the camper, SUV and other expenses-in a savings account for Bobbitt. He said he was waiting for him to stop his addiction to drugs and to see if he could manage to keep a job. The boyfriend said Bobbitt needed to get his life together first before he could handle the money. In April, 6 months after the two met, Bobbitt admitted that he had been clean for only three weeks, so he still had a drug problem. The small amounts of money he’d gotten was spent on drugs, and he’d gone to rehab twice already. He agreed that his addiction would be a lifelong struggle for him. But Bobbitt believes McClure and her boyfriend’s good intentions had turned into greed when they saw how much money had been raised. McClure bought a new BMW, and the couple started taking vacations to Florida, California and Las Vegas. They each took a $500 helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. The boyfriend admitted to gambling with some of the GoFundMe money but claimed that he’d repaid it quickly. Nowadays, nearly a year later, Bobbitt is back to sleeping under bridges and panhandling; he does not have any access to the funds that were raised for him. According to the website GoFraudMe, if Bobbitt’s claims of fraud or mismanagement turned out to be true, it would be the biggest case of GoFundMe fraud. www.straitstimes.com/world/united-states/homeless-man-claims-couple-who-raised-us400000-for-him-spent-it-on-vacations www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/philadelphia-couple-gofundme-fraud-raise-money-homeless-veteran-a8508786.html ------------ Archbishop Alleges Pope Francis Long Aware of McCarrick’s History of Sex Abuse In a shocking testimony from Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, a former Vatican ambassador to the US, he claims in a letter that the top of the Catholic Church’s hierarchy is corrupted, and calls for the resignation of Pope Francis along with several other senior Catholic officials. The letter is about the scandal regarding former Archbishop Theodore McCarrick of the US, who resigned in July because of allegations of sexual misconduct. When he resigned, Pope Francis was quick to accept McCarrick’s resignation and sentenced him to a lifetime of prayer and penance (repentance). However, in the testimony, Viganò claims that Pope Francis was aware since 2013 of McCarrick’s history as a sexual predator, as a “serial predator.” He said although he already knew, he still made him one of the highest and most visible Catholic officials in the US. He said he already knew, but still advanced him. The testimony was released as Pope Francis was touring Ireland to apologize to victims for sex crimes made by Church officials. It was released at the same time. In the testimony, Viganò outlines several reports of sexual misconduct made against McCarrick, and describes what he believes were cover-ups by various officials within the Catholic Church. Viganò also claims that the previous pope, Benedict XVI, imposed sanctions on McCarrick in 2009 or 2010, prohibiting him from traveling, giving lectures, or even celebrating Mass in public. He said he was sanctioned. Viganò claims that when the papacy was passed over to Pope Francis, Francis himself asked Viganò for his opinion on McCarrick, and Viganò personally explained McCarrick’s misconducts and Pope Benedict’s sanctions. He said after that meeting, McCarrick was free again to travel, give lectures and interviews, and served the public for another five years. He was also a trusted counselor to the new Pope and advised Pope Francis to appoint a number of bishops in the US. He was confused. Pope Francis, after the letter’s release, refused to answer whether if he knew anything about McCarrick’s allegations of sexual misconduct, whether he knew beforehand. He refused to answer. He said: “I will not say a word about this. I believe the document speaks for itself.” Two US bishops have called for an investigation. www.ncregister.com/daily-news/ex-nuncio-accuses-pope-francis-of-failing-to-act-on-mccarricks-abuse www.scribd.com/document/387040553/TESTIMONY-of-His-Excellency-Carlo-Maria-Vigano-Titular-Archbishop-of-Ulpiana-Apostolic-Nuncio#from_embed www.npr.org/2018/08/26/642061113/archbishop-alleges-pope-francis-long-knew-about-abuse-calls-on-him-to-resign [Transcript continues below]

[Transcript 3/3] John McCain’s Impact on the Deaf Community John McCain had an impact on the Deaf community in various ways. Gallaudet University President Cordano issued a statement. She said they knew Senator McCain on a personal level - that he supported the university during the “Deaf President Now” movement in 1988 and supported three laws that benefited us then and now: the Telecommunications Enhancement Accessibility Act of 1988, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the Television Decoder Circuitry Act of 1990. Cordano said McCain frequently visited the Gallaudet campus. In 1995, McCain became a Public Member of the Gallaudet Board of Trustees and served for 11 years. Gallaudet shared a photo of McCain shaking hands with the Gallaudet Student Body Government President and DPN leader, Greg Hlibok, and giving him a letter from President Reagan after the signing of the Telecommunications Accessibility Enhancement Act. He gave him the letter and they shook hands. Now, let’s discuss on when McCain stopped serving on the Gallaudet Board of Trustees. He resigned from the Gallaudet Board of Trustees after the 2006 protests against the university’s appointment of Dr. Jane Fernandes. This was after Dr. I. King Jordan announced his retirement. He resigned because he didn’t agree with the termination of Dr. Fernandes. At the time McCain wrote in a letter to Jordan saying he can’t in good conscience continue to serve on the board, because he believed Fernandes’ termination was unfair and not in the best interests of the university. A person who knew Jordan told me that he was close with McCain. Now, let’s go back to Gallaudet’s statement. Dr. I. King Jordan said McCain was the most involved and active Public Member of the Board during his presidency. He said he often attended to meetings and had dinners at House One (the President’s residence on campus). He said he visited often. He said he and his wife Linda was with McCain as they drove to the White House for the ADA signing ceremony, an experience he will never forget. Dr. Glenn B. Anderson, a former chair of the Board, said what is etched in his memory is the easy-going rapport McCain displayed with President Jordan. He remembered that and said it was evident that he had a great deal of respect for Gallaudet. President Cordano said flags on campus will be displayed at half-staff until after his funeral. I posted a picture of McCain on Daily Moth’s Facebook page on Saturday and asked people to comment on what they remembered the most from him. I will share some of your comments. Pam Holmes applauded McCain for supporting the TV Decoder Circuitry Act, saying it is why we have built-in captions in all TVs today, because of his support. She said with McCain’s support for the ADA, we now have 24/7 relay services and direct access to 911. Suzanne Milford said in 1989 McCain proposed a bill to have deaf and hard of hearing people to have access via phone relay, saying they should be able to call the White House. He, as an Arizona Senator, asked the superintendent of the Arizona Schools for the Deaf and the Blind to pick a student to call President H.W. Bush, and they chose Suzanne. She was a part of a 5-minute talk with President Bush. That was her memory. Dave Brown said his Deaf parents were fond of McCain knocking on their door in Scottsdale, Arizona when he first ran for public office, and that even though his parents were Democrats, they always voted for him. Geo Roarke said he was never a fan of McCain for many reasons, but he had high respect for him because when he was a prisoner of war, he turned down an offer for an early release, he demanded his men be sent home first, which caused him to suffer for a few more years. He said he was a true hero. Annette Merestela thanked McCain for his love and support for DACA Dreamers. Several said they remember McCain’s “thumbs down” vote to stop the repeal of Obamacare and for his comment defending Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign when a person in the audience said she didn’t trust Obama because he was an “Arab.” They remembered McCain’s defense. Thank you to those of you who shared your thoughts.
