Eat My Tongue" The Tibetan Phrase "Che Le Sa" A KEY POINT MISSING: In Tibetan culture, it is common to see the old grandparents not only give a pop kiss to the small children, but also give a small candy or piece of food to children from their mouths - directly mouth to mouth. This may not be the norm of your culture, but this is commonly done. After the elder gives a pop kiss and a candy, since there is nothing left in their mouth, nothing left to give, they will say the phrase "Ok, now 'eat my tongue'" (not 'suck,' as His Holiness misspoke due to his less proficient English). The Tibetan phrase is "Che le sa" . They say that as in *I've given you all my love and the candy so that's it--all that's left to do is eat my tongue." " And it is a playful thing that the children know. This is not really done in the Lhasa region (capital of Tibet) so much, but it is more common in the Amdo region (where HH is from). However, it is definitely a Tibetan custom. If we are honest with ourselves, we know that when we form an opinion on any topic without considering many aspects of context in any given situation, we are choosing to keep a significant degree of ignorance in our reasoning.

Andrew, I hope you will see this comment. As a Tibetan, I am hurt and quite frankly offended by your comments which practically endorse China's brutal and unjust invasion of Tibet. Saying that China's occupation of Tibet might be justified is incredibly irresponsible and dangerous because it is like justifying the invasion of indigenous lands and genocide of the native peoples just because they were deemed to be "savages" or "uncivilized". China has a well-documented history of committing human rights violations in Tibet. Over 1.2 million Tibetans died in the initial invasion. Their current tactic is putting over 1 million Tibetan children in colonial-style boarding schools, forcibly separated from their families to strip them of Tibetan language, culture, and identity (aka cultural genocide). Instead of spreading harmful rhetoric questioning a refugee community's lived experiences, please spread the word about the boarding schools in Tibet if you truly care about the wellbeing of children. Here is the UN Human Rights Commission's findings on this issue: www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2023/02/china-un-experts-alarmed-separation-1-million-tibetan-children-families-and

“Eat My Tongue” is a cultural phrase used by Tibetan elders who grew up in a different time, they aren’t aware of sensitive nature we live in today. The phrase is not to be taken literally hence the Lama did not let the boy do it if you watched the clip Protect our elders! Especially when people who are used to growing up in a face pace new norms attacks them! And especially if they go after 80+ years of their hard earned reputation!

Kids in other countries kiss parents on the lips, but yours doesn’t. That’s not your culture. This is like looking at cuisine from another country and saying it’s nasty. The child wasn’t hurt, was never uncomfortable, wasn’t touched inappropriately, and the words are taken way out of context. “Suck my tongue” is just something that evokes a very different response in the "westerners". People should pause and reflect and try to understand, and not fall prey to obvious propaganda by a regime that leads the largest global economy and has been trying to besmirch the Dalai Lama for half a century.

If he says the British did the right thing in India and should invade India again and kill these Indians, would you still laugh? This is really a case of two different cultures not understanding each other. In Tibetan custom grandparents commonly make the joke to "eat my tongue" as the as the grandparent has given everything and now the only thing left is for the child to eat the tongue. The Dalai Lama miss translated "Eat" in Tibetan to "suck" in English. Additionally, showing and sticking out one’s tongue is a sign of respect in Tibetan culture.

It seems to me like you are condoning the violation of human rights, which is unacceptable and against what you normally stand for. In comparison, you are expressing that you are okay with the Holocaust. The scale of the genocide happened was comparable to that of the Holocaust, and it is an ongoing tragedy. In regards to this incident, we often perceive the world as it truly is, when in reality, we see the world through the lens of our own experiences and biases.

FYI- the viral video was taken back in February and has become a topic of interest now in April. The video was taken in India, where his holiness has been living in exile and no one questioned his holiness’ intentions because we (Tibetans) are all privy to the Dalai Lama’s playful childlike nature. He is seen giving kisses to Desmund Tutu, does that now make him gay? Another thing to note, the little boy asked his holiness for a hug NOT the other way around and his parents were in the audience. His family did not find this vulgar or sexual in any manner. It is our hyper-sexualized mentality that needs to change. If the little boy’s parents spoke out against it and condemned the act, then all the ruckus and barking can be of meaning. But that did not happen and will not happen because his family as well as the little boy himself are familiar with his holiness’ playful childlike innocent behavior. Lastly, it is normal in our tradition and culture for elders to stick out their tongue and say “eat their tongue” out of humor. It was mistranslated, misinterpreted and sadly misunderstood. I have done that with my grandparents when I was little and NO they did not sexually abuse me. His holiness is seen as a spiritual leader and is revered by Tibetans all over the world. His holiness’ sister is regarded by Tibetans as “Amala” which means mother. We have a familial fondness and profound respect for both his holiness and his sister because they have contributed and sacrificed so much for the Tibetan community worldwide. That is why the expression of innocent love, affection and compassion is not tainted in our eyes with this modern hyper-sexualized mentality. His holiness has never had anyone accuse him of ANY misbehavior in his 87 years of being. Let that sink in. 87 years old and not one rumor or allegation against his holiness. Now the one allegation that everyone is appalled by and jumping to conclusion is ON CAMERA. His holiness became a monk at the mere age of 5 in Tibet and still to this day remains “a simple monk” as he likes to refer to himself. I don’t blame you all for not understanding the Dalai Lama’s upbringing with the responsibility of a whole country thrown upon him as a small 5 year old. No one can begin to understand or relate to his holiness’ tribulations in life as a simple monk yet a revered spiritual leader. His holiness witnessed Tibetan monks and nuns slaughtered, raped by the communist Chinese and his beloved country/home demolished. Yet amidst these horrific atrocities till date, his holiness always has a warm smile on his face and greets everyone with compassion. In this day and age, we are quick to judge a few seconds on a viral clip rather than understanding and educating ourselves with factual evidence. I understand this may seem odd to many of you but please take the time to educate yourself on Tibetan culture and Buddhism. Talk to your Tibetan friends if you have any and ask around. If you don’t have any Tibetan friends, then don’t judge right away. Please I repeat, take the time to educate yourselves. We cannot look at the world through one perspective, there’s always two sides to every story. If you guys have any questions and are open to dialogue, please comment below and we can converse with factual evidence instead of clickbait cancel culture mentality.

Sucking an adults tongue isn’t sexual!?! You’re saying an adult, who presumably has more power than the child, is telling the child to do something they clearly aren’t comfortable with, there’s no issue here? It’s not fair to the kid! And saying the parents haven’t come out is just silly. If he is their leader/prophet/guru or whatever, of course they are going to feel pressure to stay silent, or even defend this behavior. Not a good look. You’re not going to be convincing anyone with your essays.

You may think what u said about Dalai Lama was funny but it was anything but funny. To us Tibetans Dalai Lama is literally everything to us and you just make a joke out of him like it’s nothing. Dalai Lama since child to now (87 yrs), he has dedicated his whole life to spread positivity and joy and help any and everyone he comes across. Sure the word he used may not have been the political correct but take it into consideration that English is not his first language. He does not even reside in a country where they speak English as the primary language. He would have never let the child actually suck his tongue. Dalai Lama is known to joke around quite frequently. Example when he meets famous individuals with long beard, he will pull on them and if ur bald he would rub on the head of the individual and say bald bald etc. if you would have actually took the time to watch the full vid of the interaction you would have seen that the Dalai Lama was teasing the child. The child’s mother was present at the event and they both gave an interview after and spoke highly of the Dalai Lama and how grateful and honor it was to receive the blessing. You having such a popular platform and spoke so easily on how China was right to invade tibet. Was China right to kill, rape and in-prison millions of Tibetans. China taking millions of Tibetan child from their own home and putting them into a boarding school without the parents permission and teaching them nothing but Chinese and basically converting them into Chinese. Was China right for that. Plz I really do hope you will look more deeply into the situation and not go off that 10 sec vid clip and judge so harshly on his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. 🙏🙏

There's always something about these avatars or profits of modern day that always turned into this at the end. Remember Sathya Sai Baba? I mean he would make Epstein look like an amateur and got away with it until he died. He had insane amounts of celebrities on his side to the point where they weren't just in his pockets but totally devout to him. The hard cafe's slogan is one man's quotes. I mean at least america tried to indict jeffrey epstein before he got suicided. The CIA and Interpool's position was to just a written or verbal direct warning to anyone traveling to that country to be extremely cautious around living religious or spiritual figur especially with children present. There was plenty of evidence of American and U k minnors being assaulted over generations. The worst part Is after the second generation it was normalized and all the parents knew and were expecting it to happen with their children eventually. They were just normal spiritual rituals that would help the family prosper. In reality he just kept a tight of affluent families giving him the most satisfied with what seemed like a favorable return every time and proof of their spiritual convictions. But really he just Used all the money and goods that the normal poor people gave him everyday to cover that. The giant masses of poor people would give him all kinds of money every day for doing a simple transmutation for them ( Literally a slight of hand magic trick anyone can learn).

There is only one way in this universe to understand and experience a holy thing, 'that is to see and observe by purifying one's own mind.' After birth, along with age, human life is surrounded by things like sensuality, greed, infatuation, anger and anger. It is not so easy to go beyond it or get liberation. One who can know and cut its root by experiencing it with the vision of wisdom and enlightenment. Only he can get rid of that trap. And one can become a holy man. And only that person can live freely in the open boundless sky. Otherwise, life is sad like a caged bird. Dust on your face cannot be cleaned by wiping the mirror.

The true evil Dalai lama tongue action is sickening. It shows who he really is on the inside. Religion, and freedom eh? Do you really think this is his first time ?

You just thinking that, it's just a your imagination nothing more than that. Even body language can't refers which you speaking here. We know limit of culture and physical boundary, In familiar case, playing with child and go to close and kiss them, it can not break any boundary. If you are still not satisfied in this incident please you can take a flight ticket and land in India then meet the little boy and retake his statement and then proceed the case in the court. I will satisfy with your steps. But why are you speaking&viraling here in social media? The boy said after met with HH,"It's a great experience meeting someone with high energy. It's a nice feeling meeting him, And you get a lot of positive energy. it's not just that, once you get positive energy, it's a better thing, and you smile a lot more, It was really god experience." The boy's mother said "Im Dr.Payal Kanodia Trustee M3M Foundation. We've been working in dharmshala on this skill centre which we started last year and since then we were looking at seeking blessing from HH. And you know... Today we got this opportunity, especially my family was there with me... We are totally totally blessed to have got this blessing from HH. He came, addressed us in the person, and taught us about peace that the world needs and how everyone needs to feel together like brothers and sisters. I absolutely cannot express how I feel getting blessed by him." Show me the tongue sucking video clips. That was not HH commandment. Buddhism teaches various ways to behave and talk with people, It's also a compassionate philosophy or way of life, laugh and happiness is also part of buddhism. /Laughing Buddha/ That was little boy, not a young man. So HH behaving like childish. There is not single way to behave compassionately/(Kaarunik),itself a huge scope. HH's apology is just for peace and patience. If HH speak more even people will criticize Him. Then He apologized and stay silent. 'Stay silent' is also teaching of Buddha. Dhammapada (227) O Atula! Indeed, this is an ancient practice, not one only of today: they blame those who remain silent, they blame those who speak much, they blame those who speak in moderation. There is none in the world who is not blamed. He apologized it means not that HH is guilty. HH's apology was just for maintain peace and patience. It clearly says in His apology. HH's intention was not to harm or abuse the little boy. Just there is bit a misunderstanding in some people's mind. When we see and observe with right mentality..there is no way to feel bad.
