Also - if that opening montage of the other artists doesn't show how absolutely necessary punk rock was to the survival of popular music, I don't know what does.
@markofsaltburn2 жыл бұрын
I always thought that it wasn’t prog rock that caused punk, it was the tyranny of the BBC Radio 1 playlist and the appalling mess that Robin Nash was making of Top of the Pops. At the turn of the 70s R1 DJs were music lovers who played what they wanted and they weren’t scared to voice their opinions about the music they aired. The BBC become a light entertainment wasteland when things started to be over-managed, however, and pop acts were forced to conform to secure any exposure. In the album market and on the live circuit there was loads of great stuff happening in the UK in the mid-70s (Deaf School, Doctors of Madness, Dr Feelgood, etc) but you never saw any of it on the telly. Let’s not forget that the Feelgoods even had a No.1 album in the UK pre-punk.

I was about 14 and me and my mate were on a day out in Conway with my family and we all went into a local quaint teashop. In the adjoining room there was a significant amount of Mothers and Toddlers having a party, alas the jukebox was in there. As This noisy punk rock 45 was in the charts i put my 10p in and I can still see the Mothers look of horror as Algy Ward's pounding Bass riff hammered the room..........

I cannot believe this band were so underrated - they were brilliant and way way ahead of their time and with so much humour too - quite unlike the Pistols who I also love and who incidentally were their mates - and Dave Vanian was the original goth, just look at him - and they claim that the batcave was where goth supposedly started - bollocks! The Damned are legends

Right, Dave started goth.

Early goth was post-punk anyway - the later goth of wafting round graveyards in three miles of lace, being sad and quoting execrable poetry was almost divorced from its early roots. It became so OTT and elaborate but originally it was much harsher. The Damned rule tho. Machine Gun Etiquette is one of the finest albums ever, even if I am bloody ancient now.
