Paul Gray is the best bassist to play in The Damned..... well apart from that bloke who played on the first two albums. I wonder what happened to him? 🤔🙂

In watching this post, I was just wondering, what, as professional musicians, do the Captain or Paul, - in case they, by any chance, read these KZbin comments, - feel the advantage is of recording in a "proper" studio nowadays - as opposed to just using the virtual / digital software recording studio suites (Pro-Tools, Logic etc, etc)? From the mid 80s through to around 2007 / 2008 I used to co-own and "run" (into the ground!) a "proper" studio. Mid 80s to mid 90s it was 24 track analogue with a tape machine. From the mid 90s until we shut up shop it was Protools and a large digital desk (with, virtually, unlimited track availability). Once the likes of Cubase and, later Protools and then Logic etc, became feasible for very good home recording setups it became financially none viable to continue paying ground rent for the studio premises because most of the punters just disappeared to record in their rehearsal spaces, garages or bedrooms! My studio is now a room at the back of my house. I run Logic and, - because the "tech" has come on so quickly in the last few years and is now so good, - I've got to say that, when used in conjunction with third party plugins from the likes of Native Instruments and Izotope, (as well as outboard gear such as valve vocal mics and valve pre-amps) I feel I can currently achieve better quality recordings than I ever managed in the "proper" studio prior to us closing a decade ago! (I know it's not to everyone's taste but, due to the advent of very good midi drum kits - linked to suites such as BFD or Native Instruments' software - my drummer certainly achieves kit recordings infinitely better than we could achieve with mic'd acoustic kits back in the day and, if you can tell these recordings aren't actually well recorded acoustic kits, you've a better ear than me!). Along with amps, I get that acoustic instruments: strings, brass and - in particular - an acoustic drum kit / percussion need a room with good ambience and the isolation to be able to play at volume; but, for everything else that you once had no choice but to use a studio for... what's now the advantage? If the advantage is, as mentioned, just the room in order to play at volume then, why not save yourself money by hiring a room for a period, and pay an engineer to use the software and digital platform for recording? You can still all record live / simultaneously as a full band after all. There's even plugins out there for pre or post production use whereby you can add excellent emulation of room ambience and / or modelling of analogue tape bleed / compression if you should so wish! So, yeah; given all that, I was just wondering; from the perspective of people who make a living from music what they feel the advantage is of nowadays still going into a "proper" studio as opposed to recording "wholesale" in the way the Captain has here re-recorded his guitar parts?

Hi, great and interesting comment.. you're right too cos a Damned album COULD be made far cheaper by avoiding big studios but being an older band this is the only way we've ever worked and we like it I guess. 1st thing is we neem a great live room with lotsa space for all the amps and keys.. there has to be a proper acoustic piano too.. AND a Hammond organ. We spend most of the album session playing live as a 5 piece so a spacious, nice sounding main room is essential. After that a kitchen is nice.. plenty of cold storage for beer of course and a lounge for hanging out and discussing lyrics. However, the TV NEVER gets switched on. Accommodation is a fabulous bonus - Rockfield has that (where coincidentally, I was told I'd chosen the Brian May room) as did the Chapel where we recorded Little Miss Disaster and Perfect Sunday (amongst others). If we wanted we COULD record for a quarter of the price and still with the same quality results.. but only if the engineer and mixer have a great set of ears cos posh studios invariably come with this included.. if you're lucky! PS - My fave studio room of all time is the BBC session studio at Delaware rd, Maida Vale - its perfect, the sound is incredible, the vibe is fab and they've instruments lying around like the celeste I used on My Baby Don't Care (King, John Peel session).. oh, and the engineers are quick and brilliant too. Always helps! Soft Machine recorded The Moon In June session version in this room.. with reworked lyrics all about the experience. That session has been released, and is probably on youtube if youre lucky! Cheers.
