Sattriya is a classical dance of India, tracing its roots to ancient drama and music texts of India, particularly Bharata Muni's Nātya Śāstra.
The dance form, known as Sattriya, has been performed by monks in Assam for the past 600 years as a ritual worship before the Srimad Bhagavata.
Some of the dances are purely abstract. Others contain clear symbolism, like one representing the 10 incarnations of Krishna, or tell episodes from the life of the god. The monks are trained to depict either male or female characters; each gender has its own distinct movement quality and set of poses.
Mājuli or Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra River, Assam and in 2016, it became the first island to be made a district in India. In the 1790s, the island covered an area of 1,300 km².
