Sometimes it's hard to admit when you've made a mistake. This is especially true in a public forum like KZbin. Thanks for sharing your story. You may indeed save someone's life. Keep sharing your stories, you may tell one that saves my life. I love equipment but have little operating experience.

Forklift operator of more than 15 years here. This is literally one of the first things you're taught when operating a forklift. Always travel with the load facing uphill. Going forward or backwards is irrelevant. In any direction of travel, load is always facing uphill. I too forgot this one time. The rear of the forklift spun right around and I was able to slowly lower the pallet to the ground to stop the situation...but not before I had spun almost a perfect 90 degrees. The slope was not more than a 2-4% grade. What I thought was a trivial task turned out to be almost my worst day on a lift, ever. I've been lucky to never have an accident or damage any property while operating lifts, in 15 years...but that one time could have been the end of my streak. Glad to see videos like this, it's information most people don't consider or don't have access to otherwise. To some it's "common sense"...but even to us pros, sometimes its worth a firm reminder. Don't get caught taking something half serious, that can result in full trouble. It's not worth your equipment, or your life.

Thank you so much for this video. I was a flatlander and moved to Tn. I really enjoy the challenge of mowing some of these really steep slopes. I go sideways when I can because going backwards is so hard for me physically with twisting around to look back. ( I am old ha) I feel like I know what my tractor is capable of but your video taught me a lot. I also enjoyed your sense of humor. Thank you for taking the time to make this video to help people.

Mike, it really is amazing to see you posting this today because just this morning I was out of my tractor and had an experience that reminded me of the various dangerous situations which can happen, and I thought of you. I recalled having seen various FACE reports (from state universities and the CDC), where as you may know they recount and analyze fatal accidents from tractors (and other occupations). And I was thinking of you (even before seeing this) that maybe you could relate such stories of how people have been killed or maimed from sometimes easy mistakes. It seemed right up your alley since many new owners may not think about such risks, or know of or take the time to wade through those FACE reports. I was going to email this idea to you, but then bam you offer this very example. there are so many and the face reports could be great fodder for content if it may interest you. (And maybe others here could help you by sharing links to interesting ones for you to consy, saving you having to wade through them yourself to find examples that suit your audience.) Either way, thanks and keep up the GREAT work! :-)

Super video. I have MF and had been using FEL and grapple on several jobs around house. One day grapple got hooked on thick root while lifting debris and as fast as that the rear end shifted and tractor started to tilt and it was so fast that my thinking was not as fast as what was occurring. I immediately lowered grapple and was back to semi-normalcy. It just doesn't take long to do something unsafe or stupid (in my case). Thanks for your lessons on the many things you show us.

I'm glad you are okay. It's things like this where we get used to doing something a lot and don't think much about it that we get ourselves in trouble. It's not that we're cocky it's just that we forget sometimes or don't worry. I'm sure something like this, or other incident has happened to everyone who runs machinery for a long time. I know I have had my share so far. Sometimes we just need these reninders to keep us in check. Thank you for sharing this.

+Calvin Whitney Absolutely, good advice. I've never been fast enough to think like that, my instinct always goes to my feet and getting to the brake. The thing that killed me on this is I wasn't expecting any problem so I was totally unprepared for it. Many times when carrying a heavy load anywhere, I need to have one hand on the joystick and be prepared to drop the load in danger and I have to train myself to do that. Thanks for bringing that up.

excellent advice . I was working my backhoe on a very slight left hand grade I put the hoe down to push the tractor forward and forgot to pick up the stabilizers when I did the tractor was up in the air sitting on the hoe bucket and almost flipped over . and I've run heavy equipment most of my life ..and this was such a slight grade you would think there was no way it would tip . it being up in the air just that 6 inches have it that teeter spot to flip over thank God I thought quick enough to pick the bucket up and put the tractor back on the ground . so yes to all your viewers a tip over will happen in seconds always be aware of your surrounding and always no matter how easy something may seem take that extra couple seconds to think it through before you move .

I've got another 'almost story' to share. I was bush hogging going down a steep hill with my Kubota HST L3800. My jeans I was wearing had a hammer loop on the left side. As I went down the hill my weight shifted in the seat, the hammer loop had gone over shift lever on the side, as the HST is hydro trans, H-n-M-n-L, my weight shifted and pulled the lever into N...and away we went down the hill. A lessen learned. I hope every tractor owner remembers this when using a hydro tractor. Keep up the great videos Mike.

Mike, can you talk about wheel weights vs filling the tires to reduce roll over potential. And what's best to fill the tires. Is windshield fluid ok most of the time? I am puzzled to keep my tractor light weight as to not make ruts in my yard especially in Spring time vs the extra weight for roll over protection. I somewhat like the idea of bolt on weights so I can remove easily if not needed. I am not sure if that is easy or not. To remove wheel weights. Also, I saw one video where the tractor actually had a warming buzzer for tilt to warn of a dangerous angle and roll over prevention. I do have the back hoe mount which adds weight to the lower side of the tractor which helps but I still get a sense of being top heavy when mowing on a hill. Also, someone told me the brush hog provides a lot of low weight to the tractor to reduce roll over potential. How true is that?

Great video Mike, thanks for stepping up! You had a near miss because you turned your tractor into a forklift. So although the attachment is meant for a tractor, is your tractor meant for the attachment? Is your tractor rated for this attachment? Finally, if you have never had forklift traing and you you turn your tractor in to one, you may want to consider getting yourself into a class because even though you have years of experience on the tractor, it seems you could use a lesson on operating a forklift.

Great advice. The hill is about 20 degree toward where I need to move base rock and concrete mix bag of 80 lbs each. Quite steep thus I look for better machine way than my hand and muscle. Tell u just walk and carry my own 180 lbs body weight is tiring, let alone to carry bucket of 5 gallon base rock. The 80 lbs concrete mix is little easier as I carry on shoulder. But nonetheless I did about 20 bags and half yard base rock. I need a machine to move a distance about 80 ft steep hill for shed of 10 x 12, to hold a water tank of 2500 gallon. Would back down w the load work? The soil is grassy and fairy soft as we have a long rainy season. Of course I won’t choose a day when soil is still wet. What would u do to move about 3 yards base rock and about 300 bags of concrete to build up the wall and concrete pad?

Did the very same thing. One morning the grass was wet, and I started down a very steep but short hill in my yard. I have been down this hill many times when it was dry. I had a little weight, not that much in the bucket. The rear wheels started to slide because of the wet grass and before I knew it I was at the bottom and wondering how I got there so fast. The skid marks from the rear wheels told the story. Thankfully the hill was very short.

Question in your emergency, going with load facing up hill and backing down seems best. So in either case Let's say you have a run away due to wet soil, wrong direction etc. Would the safer action be to immediately set the loader in the ground as an emergency brake with or without float engaged?

I had similar situation moving a huge tree stump. I didn't have forks, so I wrapped the stump with chains and hooked the chains to my bucket. I traveled with the stump parallel to the side of a slight slope. As I was moving, the chain developed some slack. The stump started swinging to the point of destabilizing the tractor. Fortunately, I turned the tractor down hill and dropped the bucket to stop the rollover.

your right. A counterweight for the 3pt hitch is also quite ease to make. You might need a welder but the only thing that's important is that it weights so if the result looks bad etc. doesn't matter. Quite a forgiving project.Usually made with some form of container (oil barrel) filled with concrete. Since iron has a much higher density than concrete it is also good to clean the workshop/garage for iron things you don't need/should have thrown away. You just put them into the weight when casting and you got yourself some "free" extra weight.

@TractorMike
@TractorMike 7 жыл бұрын
Jim, I've never known anyone who thought they might want a cab, then bought a cab, and regretted it. I've known plenty of people who didn't buy the cab then either always regretted it, or traded later which cost some money. Having said that, you bring up one of the most important points about cabs, they are higher, if you go that way, make sure you A) install proper ballast, probably fluid in the tires so it's low B) set the wheels out for a wider stance and C) be really careful about not putting yourself in danger until you get a "feel" for the tractor. You really can't be too careful. Everyone who I know who survived a tractor rollover said it happened so fast there was nothing they could do. Also, be mindful that branches, or thrown objects from cutters make great window-replacement parts business for your local dealer :).

+STEVE ROB I don't know about small tractors (I'm using agricultural sized machines), other can maybe correct me: The front wheel doesn't need brakes themselves but if using 4WD they are mechanically locked (on HST also?) with the back wheels and when the brakes are applied on them it will also apply on the front. The 4wd version (got 2wd myself) of my 90's Valmet tractor have electrohydraulic 4wd clutch and that is engaged every time you hit the brake pedal when in 2wd mode. Also exists machines with separate "real" brakes on the front wheels. Mike, how is it on the sub-/compact tractor market?

I did the same with a forklift a few years back (kind of) even though I had plenty of experience.. I hit the brakes/clutch brake too hard by accident with a load on the third stage, it tilted forward taking my rear wheels come off the ground. Luckily the load under it was only a few feet away so I kept my brake on and tilted the mast forward slowly to where my counterweight was close to the ground maybe a few inches then I lowered my forks a little and lt let me fall back those few inches opposed to forward or slam back down really hard and do some damage to me or the equipment.

+Mow's Lawn & Iron That sounds really scary! I've seen more than my share of dangerous forklift situations. I used to unload stuff at the dealership when trucks showed up late and I was closing. I feel for the drivers and I always tried to get them unloaded and on their way. My least favorite product was 13 foot discbines. They come in on a pallet on their back, they're heavy and tremendously hard to balance, and on our forklift, only about two inches of fork went under the back half of the pallet. I always got them unloaded but it was an extremely slow process and one of my least favorite things to do. Especially fun when the driver parked uphill.

Good video about an important topic. There are even more to consider about tractors that new users forget. Because tractor have a rigid axle and a central pivoting point they have a triangle (from each back wheel's ground contact point to the front pivoting point) where the center of mass must be kept within to not fall over.In your example, it had been a little bit less incline so it would have been possible to drive forward downwards, if a little bump had pushed one back wheel up from the normal level of the ground, it could have started tipping the tractor over from the side just by getting the center of gravity to the side of the tractor. With he loader close to the ground this is may not happen but those who drive with the loader at maximum height are much more in danger since the a lot more weight gets to the side of the tractor.I really urge everyone to use a counterweight for the back 3pt hitch. It gives a lot of stability when keeping both back wheels firmly to the ground. Also, it offloads the front axle from some of the weight of a loader, bucket/forks/whatever and the actual load. Everything that eases the wear on the front axle is good.

+subwarpspeed I agree. In addition to Mike's excellent advice to back down a hill, make sure you keep the pallet forks (or bucket) low to the ground and ensure you have sufficient rear ballast. In fact, John Deere's recommendation for my tractor includes weighted tires, wheel weights AND a rear ballast box for loader work.

Going forward down a hill you can touch the load on the ground and push it down the hill of almost any size....if you have to.

The most important things is to get the right gear and dont break. You cant reverse down a hill with a silage trailer on , if you slid at all you would be finished

The most important takeaway is that the vast majority of tractors do not have brakes on the front. Therefore if your rear wheels lose contact due to a heavy FEL load, there's no way you can stop the tractor quickly.

True, except that if you are in 4wd, the rear brakes will apply some stopping power to all 4 wheels through the drive-train.

Should you ever get caught in same runaway situation...bucket or forks config tilted all way back for travel...drop the front end immediately into the ground. Forget the load. Get control of and stop of the machine.

I think if you would have immediately dropped the load to the ground you might have got the weight back on the rear tires.

Why on earth would someone who keeps saying that safety is the most important thing to think about turn around and make a video with the machine incorrectly set up? Hills or flat ground make no difference there should be a counter weight on the rear of the tractor. A box blade, rotary cutter, or a weight box should always be hanging on the rear when using the FEL. Your videos seam to be made with the right intent but a dry run should be done to make sure you cover as much as you can on your topic. Have your friends watch the video before placing them on KZbin. Overall very nicely done.

I am a fairly novice tractor driver, and I been there already with this exact situation, and that is exactly what I did. It was very scary, but I just hit the lever to drop the loader and my back wheels dropped and made contact and everything was ok.

Dropping the forks does not always stop the slide on a grade. Be safe and go up correctly. One day when you least expect it loaded or unloaded I hope you come out of that slide or etc ... It only takes once. Be safe

Alot of people think that 4wd means you can go either way, especially some who have run 2wd for years and are new to the 4wd thing. I wont take a 4wd anywhere I wont take my 2wd internationals.

How about yes always back down a hill with a load but never back up a hill with a tractor they dont tell ya that.tractors have no traction backing up a hill.no weight even a 4wd has difficulty but not everyone has a 4wd .
