On 24 April 1998, ITN filmed mullahs and students at work in the Computer Research Centre of Islamic Sciences (CRCIS) in Iran's holy city of Qom. Established in 1989 at the suggestion of the Islamic Republic's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the CRCIS sought to use modern computer technology in the field of Islamic sciences. Nearly a year after the election of reformist President Muhammad Khatami, ITN's access to the CRCIS came during a historic period of detente between the Islamic Republic and the West. The same period was marked by the advent of the internet, and ITN was keen to understand how the Islamic Republic was embracing the new technology of global connectivity, and whether the regime saw it as a potential threat to its grip on power.
