I like watching the Great Pottery Throwdown because one of the judges just cries over the beauty of each piece regardless of story. I think every wholesome competition show would benefit from someone just obsessed with the beauty of the art.

14:35 My sister told me somebody was talking about me on KZbin - that was a nice little call back to something that is indeed already nine years ago! Thank you for that. I'm also happy to answer other questions, it's nice to think back to that time. If I would have changed anything it would have been more time for the challenges - I'm mostly a fine gauge knitter and that is very hard to do very quickly and also to not kick people out since we all were super talented and creative in our own ways. Have you seen that there is a second subtitled episode? I can only recommend to everyone to watch everything anyway since there so many incredible challenges.
@emmainthemoment10 ай бұрын
Hi Rebekka!!! So glad to see you here, I was going to try and send this to you on Ravelry so I'm glad you found it! I did see there was another English subtitled episode (and I watched it too!) I just ended up not including it in this video :) Just as a viewer I felt like the time limits seemed wayyy too short so I can imagine it being really difficult to get projects finished. So cool that you got to participate in the show. I do have a few questions, feel free to answer as many of them as interest you to talk about: What was the challenge that felt the hardest to do in the time that they allotted to you? And did you have any challenges (or techniques) that you thought they might ask for but they didn't? Or things that you didn't think you'd need to know but they did?

@@emmainthemomentI'm also glad I found you too (my sister is also a crafter and following you) - I think I need to watch some crafting drama videos in the future, that's always fun! Question one: I was almost always pressed for time and in the later challenges adapted to starting from the bottom up to be able to just finish when time run out (resulting in a cropped stranded Barbie sweater) or using larger yarn and needles (which i wasn't super comfortable with). But I think the hardest was the seventh episode where the challenge was knitting a bikini bottom with unconventional yarn. I had only a tube of entrelac that I sewed together with some stitches in the bottom, that was very stressful. Ironically with the first challenge of the day, the bikini top I was finished with so early I had time to make a necklace. The other two questions I can't really answer, it's too long ago to remember what I thought before going in. I hadn't known the show really before, so went in pretty blank.

I hate that they exploit people’s trauma on all of these shows, but this was much more wholesome than many other shows. It felt like the art was a really beautiful outlet for all the participants to express themselves and that the judges and producers actually showed sincere compassion 🩷
@emmainthemoment10 ай бұрын
100%! I was worried when I first heard them say the challenge but it was not like that at all. It was really lovely to see such vulnerable moments in a show like this.
@claireloub10 ай бұрын
One reason why Bake Off was so good was because they didn't exploit people's trauma - when they tried to force it by putting a camera in the contestants' faces and saying "tell us about your dead gran's recipe" the two original presenters Mel and Sue would shut it down, and anytime someone was crying they would stand next to them and start swearing so they couldn't use the footage. You really need to hold onto that wholesomeness despite what the greedy producers might want. Some versions just haven't got that.
@pinkdarkman10 ай бұрын
Sadly, being forced to trauma dump on television in a competition setting is a great way to retraumatize someone. I thought the Danes were better than this; this level of exploitation and disregard for mental health is something I'd expect from an American tv show. Hopefully they have free therapy in Denmark and everyone was able to actually work through their traumas in a helpful way. I had a very traumatic and abusive childhood and thankfully despite being American I've been able to work through some of that in therapy. If I was on this show and got this prompt I'd just walk out and quit the show. My trauma is not beautiful, my trauma is not your entertainment, my trauma is not your profit.

I dont understand why yall are mad, I dont know if there is a flaw in the translation, but no one is being forced. The woman know what they walk into, they knew before hand. one of them said: I dont know what story im going to tell, I have watched others and cryed at the telivision from their stories, so I cant just talk about.a bad hair day, its my turn to give back. The first person desided she didnt want to tell a traumatic story so she said: My story is not tough but hard, I wanted to make a peace to repressent being busy with work kids and burning out. (I shortened it) These are art peaces, so they need to have feelings behind them, what you guys cant see, cause not available in enlish, but this is not the first episode not even the first season and these woman knows eachother well and have become friends. No one is forced to do anything but these are not weird question in denmark, we have a pretty honest society and people are in general open about hardship. We dont have a culture where people take themselves to seriusly and we are in general not affraid of other peoples opinion and not afraid to be laughed at (this ofcause is up to the individual, but we rank as top three countries wich people are not afraid to be laughed at, maybe number one but im not sure still) I know if you come from a place culture where it is important to have a facad on to be acceptable, this might seem strange and maybe even very pushy and intimate. But here it is not as people here dont talk to strangers, instead we have friends for many many years and this make a very closed yet honest and open society. its hard to explain… its not weird okay.. 😂😂 trust me😂😂 This could be a first schoolday get to know you question, thats how little weird it is 😂😂 its hard to translate a cultural thing.. They would bring in the shepherd to shear the sheep, then someone would spin the yarn, and then the women mostly would knit the sweater, which was Pretty ugly but it fulfilled the purpose of the contest. That would be a cool concept to have the same contestants for the entire show and at the end they decide who win. You could even have a few categories like "Most improved" "Viewers Choice" (have a way for the audience to vote on their favourite piece every week and keep track who gets the most votes) Sometimes I am left shouting at creative type shows when you know someone only went home because that weeks challenge wasn't their thing, not because they are not great at what they do. I am in Australia, and I would watch that, but it would probably need to be on a streaming service like Prime or Netflix but only because I am barely aware of commercial TV anymore, I don't even have an aerial for my TV to watch free to air.

what, i'm danish and i didn't even know we had this! thanks, now i know what i'm going to be binge watching today! also, good job on the danish :) your pronounciation was surprisingly good, no joke! :) and btw, if you want to see more danish knitting tv, i suggest the tv show with lærke bagger, where she travels around the nordics and knits something in each region.

In the Netherlands they also have this painting one where they're trying to find the next Rembrandt. I think they do that one on Norwegian TV too, but without the Rembrandt. In Norway we also had The Great Sow Off (so for sowing) - and MY MOM WAS ON IT :D

As a royal watcher, I'm at peak Denmark right now because the Queen is abdication on January 14. This isn't helping. Queen Margrethe is an artist when not Queening and has worked in fabric crafts so its all coming together.

Daisy is an all around artist! She did the illustrations for Tolkiens books. Under a penname obviously. Note: Her Royal highness, queen Margrethe II of Denmark is lovingly referred to as Daisy, because of her love of George Jørgensen's daisy jewelry

The price is the honour if being the winner. I have not seen the show myself, but I found an article telling about the price. So the people joining must have a great joy in knitting and doing it, not for the money or any other price, than the joy of being in the show and the hope, that they can call themselves a winner.

Love this. Check out The Great Pottery Throw Down (British)! The stakes are raised with materials that can shatter, crack, and disappoint in the firing,

Aww you have a soft heart, that's awesome. My youngest daughter and I cry at everything, even some commercials. My daughter hates watching competitions of any kind as she ALWAYS feels bad for those that are eliminated or lose. She watched the superbowl then cried for SF. Love the videos and ALL the work and research you do for these. Cheers!!

Hi, Danish person here, sooo on mysterious Vithard… it is really no surprise when you see how sweet he is in the show, but I can tell you that he was a wonderful pedagog as well while doing the show😊

oooh it would be so cool to have a project runway-style challenge where they have a budget or time limit to get materials and then reveal the challenge, or like an rpdr/ink master-style challenge where they bring people w unique circumstances and then make them items to empower them

We (as in Denmark) had another show similar. It was about finding Denmark's next big designer. I only watched the first season, but it was quite fun to watch. They were trying out each other's fields of crafting, like woodworking, I think jewelry making was in there too (it's been a while and my memory was never been particularly good 😁), but they were about 5 or more contestants, i think with each their own special field of talent and knowledge. I just don't know if it's available to watch, or with subtitles for the rest of the world!

I don't know if you want to stick strictly to fiber arts for show watching, but if you're open to a wider lens for arts/crafts, Full Bloom (floral arrangement competition; HBO/Max) and Blown Away (glassmaking competition; Netflix) were both quick watches and SO fun

I saw all the seasons in 2 days. Funny that I just had a dream of this like 3 days ago, and wanted to rewatch, this video just brings back the 2020 vibes for me

Good job speaking danish 👏 And I to love this show, sad they stoped making them. I have met the 2nd host on a knitting festival on Fanø, before I saw the show, it was so fun. We just sat down at his table and had lunch because no one else was sitting. We talked to him a bit about his knitting (he was knitting a sweater with small - if I remember correctly - pink sheep on it). People occasionally came over and said hello, and it became more and more clear that others knew him. It was only later that I caught who he was🤭
