This 70 year old first time seeing this movie. The dialogue is sprinting , and the writer is to be congratulated, posthumously. The acting is superb and flawless. The only slight flaws,,, the falling scene,,, they just didn’t have the technology. And then the death scene at the end for the old husband; he kind of fell hoaky. But barely a hair of a difference to give this great movie 2 big thumbs up. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to. 👏👏👏👏and Lucy ❤!

It has been said that her voiced changed after playing Lucy Riccardo for years - her character's voice was higher than her real voice -
@LJ-ht4zs
@LJ-ht4zs 14 күн бұрын
Not only the smoking altered her voice - she spoke in a higher pitched voice in playing the Lucy character - which strained her vocal cords - but the higher pitch was in tune with her Lucy character. Desi Arnaz told her not to go on tv interviews during that time - her natural voice was much lower and huskier and would blow the Lucy character.

What an absolute gem! This film is like peeling onions without tears. The tempo and suspense are sustained by superb acting. music score and lighting. it's by far the best film I've watched in nearly 10 years. It does take a while to catch fire, So, it's no surprise that it struggled to gain traction back in 1946.

Nothing like a great Noir film like this one. Good story, great lines, love everything about it. The scenery is great, wardrobe, every detail is what makes this an awesome movie. Why can’t they make movies like this anymore? Lucy plays the kind of gal who can take you or leave you, but makes you feel she is right for you whether you think so or not, ehh, either way she comes out a survivor, strong character. In any movie she played her eyes alone can make the scenes intriguing, suspenseful, and keeps you guessing for the next turn around the corner. Fantastic actor!! Lucille Ball was the most powerful woman in movie industry. She co-founded Desilu with Dezi Arnaz but soon did run the company alone, she did not only produce countless classic series like I love Lucy, Mission Impossible, The Untouchables and Star Trek but owned RKO and at some time her company was the biggest player in Hollywood. She could do whatever she wanted. No other woman - or man had so much power in Hollywood, not even Walt Disney or Louis B. Mayer who actually were employees of their companies.

Ball and Stevens are simply wonderful together in this film, and I can’t think of another noir that offers this particular male/female dynamic. Stevens worked a lot in the next few years after this, never quite attained major stardom but was dependably watchable. He later did some interesting work as a director (Time Table and Cry Vengeance).

Ya' know, if a person was just listening to the audio & not watching the movie, you would know Lucy by her voice. I think Lucy & Carol Burnett were/are the two best female comedians. Love Clifton Webb, especially in Cheaper by the Dozen. I love old Hollywood movies the best.

Clifton Web was a fine actor. In the 1953 movie “Titanic”, he and Barbara Stanwick (another favorite of mine) played a scene that reduced me to tears. They were a wealthy estranged middle age couple, who basically came to despised each other. Now faced with death he reveals his true feelings, his love and devotion for her and the moment he first saw her, saying she was the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen. It’s a beautiful scene, that really stirs up emotion. He played it well, especially when you consider he was a gay man. You could feel the emotion. Wonderful actor, class act.

@@ricardocantoral7672 - It’s “TITANIC” 1953. Barbara Stanwyck co- starred with Robert Wagner, who was 23 years her junior. She was 45 and he 22. They started an affair that lasted 4 years. It’s my favorite version of Titanic. Fabulous actors, a real tear jerker.

The problem with Lucille Ball in her earlier career is that they didn't know exactly where to cast her. I was told this by a friend who knew everything about Hollywood and cinema from the 30s and 40s. She passed on but I learned a great deal from her. She knew everything even the direcectors and so much about Ida Lupino. I still miss her dearly.

Lucille was Queen of the ‘B’ movies. She never really became a strong leading lady in the major films, like Lana Turner, Betty Grable, Barbara Stanwyck. I don’t know why. She was tall, gorgeous, pretty and could act drama and comedy. She owed her career to Lela Rogers, Ginger Rogers mother, who was an agent and liked Lucille and pushed for her to get bit parts in Gingers films. IMHO, the timing was wrong. By the time she was recognized for her acting ability she was getting old for Hollywood standards. I’m her biggest fan!

@@mchapman1928 I read somewhere that she was going out with a big director (married) but when he wanted to marry her - she broke it off. (He was married with 3 children) After she broke it off with him, somehow his wife got wind of it and she was not going to get the big roles as she was put on a list (they said it was the wife, but seemed more like the jilted director - how come the wife found out after she jilted her husband?)

@@LJ-ht4zs - That’s probably true, wouldn’t surprise me about Hollywood. I recall an interview with Desi on the Johnny Carson Show in the early ‘80’s. He said Lucy was “way ahead of her time” with her thinking on sex and dating. He chuckled. Lucille did date, and she didn’t want to get married. She felt safer dating married men, no pressure to wed, she once claimed. The situation you mentioned, the director was Gene Markey, the wife most likely knew of the affair and wasn’t threatened until hubby wanted to marry Lucille, then the vindictiveness started. Who really knows? The “Latin Lover” craze was in full swing back then and she fell head over heels in love with young Desi.

I loved "Dance, Girl, Dance" with Lucille Ball & Maureen O'Hara. Even though they co-starred Lucy was by far the more outstanding. She played a burlesque dancer in the movie & did all her own singing and dancing - it was great. In one scene, Maureen & Lucy had a physical battle and Lucy was all beaten up, dark makeup under her eyes, and kind of tacky clothes on from the show. She was introduced to Desi Arnaz and she did not interest him at all. Later in the day, she walked in all fixed up and Desi asked, Who is that? The person said you met her earlier today, that's Lucille Ball. He was telling the story to Johnny Carson on the Tonight show, many years after their divorce and Desi described her the 2nd time when they met, you knew that he was seeing her image in his mind - describing exactly what she was wearing and saying with her blond hair and her beautiful blue eyes. You could tell how much he still loved Lucy. You could tell my his expression that, Johnny Carson felt it too.

It's a shame Lucille Ball didn't do more noir. She had that snappy, sarcastic, half-amused, half-contemptuous snarl so essential to the genre down pat. A quintessential noir with a lot of holes. For example, how could a guy in a cheap suit and beat-up fedora who doesn't quibble at the offering price be mistaken for a fat cat art buyer?

@@kiwitrainguy Plus, no one buys a Donatello on the spot after glancing at it in an art gallery. Doesn't happen. He needs to know the provenance (its history of ownership); proof that it's really by the artist; and a dozen other things first.
