Kevyn created the Isabella Rosselini looks for a Lancome campaign. It was multiple pages in a magazine. Can you imagine the #1 makeup brand doing that today, taking a risk like that?! It was gorgeous! And epic!! I had all the images on my dorm room wall in the mid 1990s. Loved them. Thank you so much for this video. The way you two can articulate what you see and feel with each image blew me away. It showed what true artists you both are by the little details you called out. More content like this, please! Also, Kate Moss b&w was inspired by Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde. Kevyn was clearly inspired by the 60s and the 20s. That dark, crisp upper lip line is giving Clara Bow vibes from 1920s silent film.

Trying for perfection in makeup is SO different from hair. I've known cancer patients who got through the emotional trauma of their condition and treatment, including losing their hair, by pursuing and attaining stunning makeup looks. I've been told several times that if they felt their face looked great, they could pop on hat or a wig or just go bald and still feel great about how they looked. Our faces are the first things everyone notices.

I totally agree, and I think makeup on bald people is so striking and cool, it leaves the focal point to the face

@@AngelaSmith_1970 - Skincare makes all the difference. I've always had challenging skin, and now that I'm maturing it's even more challenging. It took me this long to finally figure out how to take care of it and it's been a game changer. I actually like my complexion better now that I'm in my 50s than when I was even in my 20s, wrinkles and all.

For me it's Max Factor as the founder, doing Lucy's makeup on "I Love Lucy" & of course having his pancake makeup. Then, it's Kevyn Aucoin, as you said, the Godfather of modern makeup. Makeup as we know it today doesn't exist without either of those men.

If you look at the most beautifully brilliant and creative artist. From writers, music, art and makeup, they've been sad, depressed and struggling with their inner demons. Very unfortunate because they gave us such beautiful things to see and read.
@ghoulishtoad
@ghoulishtoad 11 ай бұрын
Yes my mind goes to Franz Kafka for some reason. it is a beautiful irony in a way the most depressed suffering people make art that brings so much joy, but in my opinion I remember making the best art when I'm happy and confident, and I used to go to an arts high school and I figured this out myself, as a Gen z it is a crisis how much depression and anxiety we have so of course I was surrounded by it, struggled with it myself as an undiagnosed autistic all of school.. sorry for the rant, tldr I agree ❤
@josephinejones9392
@josephinejones9392 10 ай бұрын
I agree with this sentiment and was not tldr, I sometimes write novels as captions so this was literally 1/2 eloquent & concise sentances. Don't worry :) Yeah I'm an artist and I am best trusting my innate cicadium rhymn of my proccess, those longer and shorter cycles, almost lunar (but completly unique to each person) and I was taught -- and I have come to believe -- be it nature, nurture, or something else entirely -- it's about figuring out and accepting as quickly as possible the way you work inherently and those REST, PRODUCE, REASEARCH, INSPIRE, PLAY, THINK, DISSOCIATE, EXPERIMENT or as simple as MAKE / NOT MAKE kind of productionary individuation, largely genetically or broadly fixed and we can come to see do we make every day for an hour, or do we do 2 48 hour straight immersion once every week and a half, or anything else or imbetween cycles... I did fine art Ba at Goldsmiths University of London (it was incred. 9 or 10/10 literally, although imperfect ofc) and one of my tutors in 2nd year told me to figure out my cycles and be prepared to , if i was to create, with ease (or at least give myself a sodding break ) accept one's calling, desires of what and how and when to produce, and the-- very important -- NO MATTER HOW individual or 'unconventional' these artistic 'lunar'-esque individuated and self-acknowledged learned patterns and rythmns of how and when and with what regularity one is productive / creatively producing work. Like, when I (and it's non-liner, but it's been a decade since I graduated art school I more and more realise as i type at 6:11am on a Monday morning having been working all night that this is unconventionality in terms of structure.... yes But, accepting these personal flows and quirks, without rejection makes when I do make and more significantly the like other relative like (*insert percentage unique to each individual here *) those 'other' times, re: immaterial labour, reasearch, rest, play, play but without specific artistic 'output/ destination'... those times (for me most of the time, is so reasearch heavy. I am an aesthetics/style/fashion/history/psychology/philosophy/dressing/visualculture/beauty nerd. In every fibre of my essence. Anyway poss we can change these inherent / easier arriving rhymns. I am imperfect and forget this helpful advice, but it's so soothing to remember that just because I work like X, and person A works more like Z than X, that's cool! Because peoples way of artistic rhymn, will (and should?!) vary wildly. It totally takes the pressure off. As for being trauma-informed. I'm an orphaned human and a trans woman, foster home graduate from outside of London, so there's alot of material. I guess only speaking from my experience, I find the switching off I am able to do whatever percentile I am, when making, SOOOO cathartic. Like more than therapy, more than... alot of things. But then again, it cannot be like that all of the time, or, most even (for me). But those moments (such as tonight a little, as I listen along and style some wigs for a project, I am calm and serene and content. Possibly this creativity /being SO invested and focused / "in the zone" -- with reasearch etc too, no doubt but theres something special about like Kevin, the getting lost in the making. The meticulousness. The particular-ness-esque-ness of it all. I respond deeply too. And wow, he was, his work lives on and is so iconiclastic, referenced in high fashion / creatives as mentioned in wonderful deep dive above by the boys, with Gaga's bad romance video, still super spot-on, was, burned brightly, inspired many, and still is. d'être. Like, one can work on with their 'artistic temperment' an exhibition or in my case, video art, fashion collections, multiple works for exhibitions, in a very long-form manner. And perhaps that is just so much more (or relative, speaking for myself here) the idea of every week going from idea to inception to production post production edit and to post -- and be *happy* in the way, of automatically, refining, for as long as my artistic profession has luckily provided me with the support and structure to; take pause, research, refine and curate, excavate meaning, persue many experiements be they fabric prints on silk chiffon or nuanced creative writings to tease out a nuance that I will archive, invest my time and soul into, like this post (which was surely illucidated my own 'TLDR' nature, as a baseline. Again trusting the rhymns.... Shaming one's self is waste of time. Anyway hats off to Johnny and Kevin, and if they have a team, the team behind podcast. I can't wait to figure out what that shorted cycle is and how to trans+*-(lgbt joke intended lol)-late, this wonderful artistic symbiosis, which was a way of working, I have long practiced, of everything from manic or euphoric sober exhausted eyed creativity, just channelled, from some source, almost, spiritual in it's intensity and rapidity. Into, patterns of immense immersion for X amount of time reasearching or needing space from the other individual parts of the mechanical complex interconnected individual parts of a machine when you take it apart or something. Or all the cells if you divided them in a waterlily. Like, they're all going to build to make a waterlily, but I have to trust, longer-form creativity, established through practice, trauma-informed or sheer love of (insert YOUR specialist subject or inspiration here) ((Haha)) what you do, like a garden tending to all the individual parts seperatly at first as they go into Winter, but truly eventually in this metaphorical or conceptual SUMMER of one's own aforementioned artistic indivuated way of working -- format/logistically wise -- working through these 'LUNAR' phases of development which trusting , is the most important, and get's easier, but is so hard. Because often (so easy to forget, espc at first, or when in crisis for example/extrenuating/excruciatinly emotionally tempestuous of circumstances to navigate, this info -- on productivity, trust, faith in the eventual coming together in an immensely complex, web artistic, verbose, articulate, or not, rather, EXACTLY as the, you, individual is contented with the coming together of these small blooming roses here, the waterlillies over there, the grass now longer and weedy and clover-filled, cow-parsley rich and with wildflowers, made all of those disperate reasearch phases, (especially -- for me, easier to doubt/ less automatic / those thinking, mulling over, overthinking, forgetting, putting down, and picking back up (seemingly ) interconnected aspects of a larger whole. The search for meaning when trauma-informed individuation, in the face of having to carry on, artistically express... anything, having been shaped by, everything one has been subject too in one's life. It's a perculiar occupational hazard, the intensity of feeling, but in a way, a million ways, individual jigsaws where each artist has all the pieces, but how quickly to spend on painting each piece, researching around the making and physical assemblage, meaning making, blah blah, is unique and I find myself keen to find faster ways of making. But am (perhaps because am so trauma-informed lol? AND add innattentivity, surely doesn't make things, much easier logistically/ structurally, although... when in 'flow' (aka this comment which has become a veritable chapter in some larger thing, or a part of a greater whole which seems like a strange misuse of time. And perhaps to some it is. I guess one's engagement with life, and the thinking through, or not, or the production / manifestation of that in whatever medium it embodies and is shown publically/privately, is up to one's own essence + soul, one's framework and desires and all the rest.

When I saw Kevyn Aucoin’s name I couldn’t click fast enough!! I graduated high school in 1984, and I remember reading Vogue and Allure magazines when he was first becoming that go-to makeup artist. I loved what he was able to do with makeup, but I was even more drawn to him. I’m not quite sure how to describe it, but he had this almost haunted look in his eyes. I’m still stunned when I look at the looks he created, but I felt very protective of him, too. It feels weird to say that. Thank you for reminding us of his genius, and I can’t wait to try and find the documentary. Love you both!! ~Leslie~

The contouring idea you talked about is based on looking at real light and shadow on a real face. The bone structure makes that shape you're pointing out, not a dark sort of widow's peak as so many people do. I learned that in figure drawing years ago. Follow the bones.

My writers are the same way after finishing the final draft of a ms - completely drained, emotional, exhausted. I think any creative endeavor is the same, if it's the real thing, it's exhausting.

You’re both so incredibly talented and wise beyond your years. If you ever want to revisit Kevyn’s story, please reach out. I had the pleasure of meeting him and would love to share my experience. I was a website admin for Kevyn Aucoin beauty when the line launched in 2001.

I loved this episode, your knowledge and admiration of the artform was a joy to listen to. You made me sit at the front of my seat glued to the TV, afraid to blink in case I missed something. And what you said about some makeup artists not being able to adapt to the person they are doing the makeup on is so true, as is the knowledge to do brown people's makeup. I'm doing TV on a regular basis and the people doing my makeup is always doing something for a white person and not bringing my best features forward or shades that complement me.

Love this tribute! Kevyn's work is what made me want to learn makeup as a teenager. His passion reached out from his work and grabbed your soul and shook you to find your own passion. I still love makeup and now I'm also a watercolor artist. I love breaking all the rules to find magic in my art and that's just what Kevyn did.

I obviously enjoy makeup, but not to the depth that you both do. Nevertheless, it was fascinating--engrossing, even--listening to you going into the tiniest minutia of Kevin Aucoin's techniques and artistry. Your passion is galvanizing. I'm heading straight for my sewing room to make something beautiful.

Yay! You two are great, always uplifting, thank you. I love how you drift off topic, sometimes those are the most interesting bits! It’s a dream of mine that one day you will do my makeup. This is very negative, so I apologise in advance; I don’t like Charlotte Tilbury.

Hello guys! Thank you for this episode! I have both Kevin Aucoin's books and they were my encyclopediae of makeup, they really blew my mind then - even now, I feel like I learn something new everytime I open them! Could you please share the name of the documentary in the description of the video? (P.S. there's a typo there, you called him Aucion, no big deal but thought I'd let you know) See you next time! 💜

I hate when people say, "how can you love someone else if you can't love yourself" it's simply not true and feeds into a belief that is truly detrimental for many people. Yes you can love others and yes you can also work on yourself. There is nuance and this phrase is meant in good faith (typically) but it's really not as positive as people may think it is.

I've had the Kevyn Aucoin documentary saved for awhile now. About 3 months ago I tried the Aucoin foundation and although he isn't with us anymore, the foundation is beautiful (IMHO), matches my skin tone (I think) and is like a whisper on the skin yet covers my "woman of a certain age" imperfections. I then ordered 2 eye shadow compacts (the one with 6 colors each). I still need help with using them but the colors are gorgeous. I'm not used to using some of the saturated colors but working on using a light hand and practicing to get better at where colors go on my eyes. This video is one of my favorites that you two have made! I love how you're so excited about Kevyn's artistry and that you are educating us on his unique techniques. I'm now going to watch the documentary tonight as I can't wait any longer the way you are talking about it. Thank you for sharing!
