I clearly remember watching Batman Begins, and seeing that joker card at the end was so exciting. Then I found out the Joker was being played by Heath Ledger, and I was so confused because I always thought of him as the romantic movie heartthrob type. But then I found out he took his life, and for some reason that shook me, even though I'd never seen him in anything but Home and Away (which I didn't watch, just saw the ads for it on TV). I'd already decided to watch The Dark Knight after seeing Batman Begins, so I watched it as soon as it came out in the cinemas. It left me absolutely stunned. Heath Ledger's performance was incredible, in the most literal sense of the word, it left me incredulous. I didn't believe I just watched Heath Ledger play the Joker, I thought _that was the actual Joker._ I'm grateful that I got to experience his Joker, and I'm glad you enjoyed the experience as well. It's going to be interesting to see your reaction to The Dark Knight Rises.

It's a great film, but there are much better superhero movies that embrace their comic roots without trying to overly ground themselves in our reality. Spider-Verse is a perfect example, as is The Incredibles. And while I love The Dark Knight, I can't call it the heavyweight champion of superhero movies, up there though but it's like the white bread of Superhero films.

Ledger already had substance abuse and insomnia problems before this. Maybe or maybe not the role came at a more difficult time than normal and maybe it exacerbated his insomnia more than normal, but there's not really much evidence of a link otherwise. It was the concoction of six drugs that did it - mix multiple opiates and benzos are you're playing with fire. It's sad all the same, and he's phenomenal in the film.
@Nightfly_692 ай бұрын
All reports were that he was in good spirits during filming as well as profoundly excited and happy to make the role his own. I don't think the role broke him in any way.
@friendsfan20752 ай бұрын
Utter bullshit. His death has nothing to do with the role.
@inigomontoya40322 ай бұрын
There is plenty of proof that that's not the case. There are numerous videos and pics of him having a great time. His death was accidental. Unless there's actual proof it wasn't, that's a false claim. And his final role in Dr Parnassas was great. The story of how that got finished is beautiful.

Both of the villains so far...Ra's al Ghul and the Joker (I don't know much about Scarecrow's backstory), can make one feel empathetic for them. There is so much pain and heartbreak from their pasts, that it's easy to see how easy it was for them to go down the wrong path.

@@LippsReacts Ra's' pain came from losing his wife. I never liked superhero movies, at least not growing up. I can well understand why people like them, but personally I just can't put up with the stupidity of the characters and plot crutches in the form of superpowers~ And that's why The Dark Knight is probably one of the few movies I liked. It's still a fairy tale, but much more serious - I find myself involuntarily more immersed in it, I believe in it more. And remembering the superpowers - I can't criticize the stupidity of using/not using some powers: the characters are human - rich, smart, talented, but human

Heath Ledger carries The Dark Knight for me, but I'll always prefer Batman Begins. It just has more visual personality with its Gotham City, color grading, and overall atmosphere. I’m not the biggest fan of the new Batsuit, and Gotham just looks too much like Chicago. I would’ve liked to see Two-Face survive into the sequel, as I always thought he was a little underused. And, of course, this film is the beginning of Bale's notorious Batman voice that I just do not like. But as a film it's damn good, simply prefer Batman Begins. The film also had the negative effect of influencing every superhero movie, mostly DC afterward to adopt the same style as The Dark Knight, including Man of Steel, a Superman film. This led to a trend where everything became overly gritty and dark, while also trying to be as grounded as possible. In the process, many of the cool comic book elements and iconic designs were stripped away. It also created the misconception that DC, by default, is "darker than Marvel," which isn’t really true. Edit: These replies be salty.

Re: Chicago. You are correct about Dark Knight's Gotham resembling Chicago, IF you're talking about inside the loop (and probably most of the North side). There's even a nod to Upper/Lower Wacker Drive. However, a lot of Chicago, mostly on the South and West sides, looks very like the Gotham of the first movie. Especially at night. I actually thought the Gotham of Batman Begins was modeled after Chicago, most of my memories of there being West Side. Tale of Two Cities? 🙂
