Tokyo Revengers (Japanese: 東京卍リベンジャーズ[a], Hepburn: Tōkyō Manji Ribenjāzu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Ken Wakui. It has been serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine since March 2017. An anime television series adaptation by Liden Films premiered in April 2021. A live-action film adaptation is scheduled to be released in Japan in July 2021. As of July 2021, the Tokyo Revengers manga had over 32 million copies in circulation. The manga won the 44th Kodansha Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2020.
Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old freeter with no hope in life, learns one day that his middle school ex-girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, as well as her younger brother Naoto, are killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang. When Takemichi is pushed in front of a train, he teleports exactly 12 years into the past to 2005. Takemichi relives his middle school years, and after revealing to Naoto that Hinata will die, Takemichi is suddenly transported back to the present, creating a time paradox where Naoto survives and is now a detective. Naoto deduces that Takemichi is able to travel back 12 years when they hold hands. Using knowledge from the future, Takemichi vows to save Hinata.
Takemichi's determination gains the attention of the Tokyo Manji Gang's leader, Manjiro "Mikey" Sano. With clues from the present, Takemichi learns that the results of Tokyo Manji Gang's rumble with Moebius will cause inner conflict and lead to the death of Mikey's second-in-command, Draken, on August 3, 2005, which will then lead Mikey to succumb to violence. After Takemichi helps resolves their dispute and prevents Draken's death, he returns to the present, only to find out that Hinata and his friends still die in the current timeline. With only the clue that Tetta Kisaki transformed the Tokyo Manji Gang into a violent organization, Takemichi learns that the gang was absorbed into Valhalla and Mikey has become violent, having killed Kazutora over murdering Keisuke Baji on October 31, 2005, in an event called Bloody Halloween. Though Takemichi is unable to prevent Kisaki from becoming a member of the gang, as well as Baji's death, he encourages Mikey to forgive Kazutora.
After returning to the present, Takemichi once again discovers that the Tokyo Manji Gang has grown into a large-scale crime organization, and Hinata and his friends die once again, while Draken is framed for a murder he did not commit. Takemichi travels back to the past to prevent the Black Dragons from being absorbed into the Tokyo Manji Gang by resolving the events of December 24, 2005, resulting in Kisaki removed from the gang. However, he and Naoto discover in the present, that Mikey died as well after learning Kisaki is still on the loose and uses Tenkiju as a new crime organization, and both Takemichi and Naoto, including the Shiba family, will be their next victims. While Takemichi and Naoto are being shot to death by Kisaka and Takemichi’s childhood friend, Kakucho, they manage to use time-leaping ability to transfer Takemichi back to the early 2006 and put an end to Kisaki’s conspiracy once and for all.
