14:51 Tanith was a dancer in the Land of Shadow??? Also, it'd make sense during the veiling of the Land of Shadow by Marika this potion was given to her to forget as this place was basically removed from history. I think it's possible that these tonics of forgetfulness were given to the lords of the Lands Between, but Rykard refused his hence why there was one remaining for Tanith to give to Rya. This could be how Rykard still embraced the blasphemous existence as an ally to Mesmer (assuming the depraved perfumers were servants of Mesmer as suggested in their garments and perfume/sleep stuff seems quite relevant in the DLC trailer)

Rykard is not the only one who rebelled against the golden order. All the demi-gods except Morgott did. The fact that Marika was unable to stop her children from defying the Golden Order conveys one of the most important ideas of Elden Ring: The gods are fickle. The suffering of the world is because they are not all-knowing and powerful. Most of Elden Rings endings basically spit on the gods in some way by establishing a new order that exposes their powerlessness. Why is that? Because in the presence of free will there cannot be absolute order and without free will there cannot be faith and therefore the gods lose their power. Ranni's Age of the Stars attempts to fix this dilemma by establishing an order that is uncertain. We have to assume that Ranni's order is imperfect just like Marika's because Ranni could not be a god if nobody believed in her. But by keeping her order a secret she makes it hard to be defied because nobody knows what constitutes an act of heresy.

This has got to be one of the best questlines I've ever experienced in a game. There's so many mythic motifs in this quest that get turned on their head and given a whole new realm of meaning. The snake amnion and the blasphemous birth. That alone feels like a mythological motif I would kill to hear people like Joseph Campbell just go off on. And then that ending of finding Tanith devouring the devourer is utterly epic. All of the traditional theological themes of Lilith and Luciferian pride that western culture is already familiar with just amplify the potency of this questline even further. I can't stop nerding out about how badass the story line of this quest is. I really hope the right writers, crafters, and meaning makers expound upon the elements of this story and do it justice in other mediums as well. It's simply too good not to explore more! Thank you for the brilliant synopses!

Great video as always. My question is: What were they doing at volcano manor? What's with all the tortures and the imprisonment of the abinaurics? He builded an army of machines for the sole purpose of torturing people, but why? Also was Rykard actively trying to "replace" the humankind with men serpent throught rituals or they are just "natural serpent spawn", a byproduct of the snake god?
@abakedtater8553 Жыл бұрын
One thing I find interesting is the reversal of expectations. We're led to believe Rykard fell into disgrace and everyone abandoned him, but what we see is actually sort of the opposite. Before, as a man, he was a depraved butcher and torturer, a "might makes right" enthusiast supported by equally depraved knights and inquisitors. Once he transforms, they all leave him or die, and all of his remaining followers are people who love him or are genuinely onboard with the idea of rebellion against the Erdtree. Even those he consumes live on forever as part of him, and while the knight's ghost implies the serpent had control and Rykard is no more...in the boss fight it seems the other way around. Rykard got his happy ending, bizarrely, became immortal and found out who his true friends were. I could be wrong but that's how it felt to me, like he's a sort of inverse Ludwig where his grotesque form is an improvement.

To better understand the serpent symbolism, one only needs to look for Eochaid and it's tracings. The gladiators were originally from Eochaid, as per item descriptions. In which, I believe Tanith is also from this faraway land. In grand colosseum, they would engage multiple prisoners and/or heretics to fight to the death, clad in serpentine iconography (gladiator set). This was done as a way of showing the enemies of the Erdtree, the Serpents, destroying one another. In which, they would be corralled until only one would remain at the end. In this case, it may follow similar colosseum rules of "last one to live earns freedom." The Path of the Champion, so to speak. Why else would the weapons of Eochaid dance (regalia of Eochaid/Marias Executioner Sword)? It was all a part of the *spectacle.* Various combatants would be equipped with "kits" or "loadouts" of varying serpent weapons, some with range, some with defense, some outright offense (serpent bow, serpent fang, serpent shield for example) and they would all be let loose to have the best snake win. It is all a very gruesome window to the actual colosseum and their tactics of *"entertainment".* Prisoners were sent by boat from the Lands Between (Elemer of the Briar's set) and Rykard, being essentially the Lord High Inquisitor of his time, would have oodles of prisoners to donate to one of his favorite spectacles. Eochaid must have been a foreign land conquered by the forces of the Erdtree a long time ago. Rykard, being a 'ruthless justiciar' would obviously have enjoyed such a spectacle, to see enemies of the Erdtree "rightfully punished." After all, he was an ambitious sort that obviously sought to invoke the fear of god into those who partake Blasphemy. Such can be easily derived from the fact that the confessor set comes from a merchant in Mt. Gelmir; as well as the gruesome, almost 'inquisition-like' torture mechanisms going on at Mt. Gelmir and the volcano manor. Rykard was a justiciar, or more apt to call him a leader of the Erdtree's very own Inquisition. His Confessors would seek out those accused of heresy and torture them until they got the answer they wanted, using weapons such as rot and stealth and all manner of torture once their prey was abducted. Yet Rykard, due to his ambition of wanting to see all enemies laid bare, became susceptible to a particular dancer of Eochaid, Tanith. As Patches says, "This is what happens when the lord of ambition is head over heels with lady blasphemy." Tanith must have had some idealism based around the strength of the champions, which is most likely what enticed Rykard's ambition. He wouldn't be happy until all his enemies are gone, why not become the all-devouring god of his enemies? The intent changed, obviously, once Rykard gave himself to the God-Devouring Serpent, Eiglay. This can be extrapolated from the spirit of the Gelmir Knight that tells you about the serpent-slaying spear. How everything changed once he gave himself to the serpent. I've done a lot of looking into the principles of Eochaid, as well as it's symbolism and how it leaks slowly into the Lands Between. This is my current theory, that Rykard's ambition became enchanted by Tanith's blasphemy. They truly did love each other, at least, as much as sociopathic/psychopathic couples can.

Rya: I was an unwanted child. Tarnished: Not true. You’ve got a mother that wants you. A mother that cares for you, in her own way. SHE wants you. Rya: Born not of grace, but of a hideous ritual. Tarnished: Just because you’re born as one thing doesn’t mean you have to remain that way forever. And from what I’ve seen in this world no one is born a monster. Rya: Something that can never be accepted, not by men, nor serpents. Tarnished: Maybe…maybe you’re right. Maybe the world won’t accept you. But there’s a woman in this manor that loves you very much. And besides, I accept you. As long as you’ve got people in your life that accept you for who you are, then that’s enough.

Maybe she forgot that she gave birth to a lovely snek girl. Or maybe I'm just throwing theories at the wall and seeing what sticks.

I definitely ascribe to the notion that Rykard assisted Ranni with the Night of the Black Knives. Namely, that he's was to one to carve the other half of the death rune into Ranni's back. She may not have trusted him with the entirety of her plans, but she could certainly trust that he would help her in rebelling from the Golden Order. Anything to get one over on the gods, eh? (On a funnier note, she can then claim that both of her brothers stabbed her in the back, both literally with Rykard and figuratively with Rhadan's star stunt.) There's no proof of this of course, but until proven otherwise that's my headcanon.

In response to your last question: Conceptually, rising against the Erdtree is probably good. Marika/Radagon is a bit of a shit, and the Greater Will clearly does not have good intentions in controlling the Lands Between. But eating a bunch of people to gain their power? Probably not the most optimal way of bettering the world, I must say. Tl;dr Rykard's plan: Good concept, 0/10 execution

That seems to be a constant. Every faction which openly opposes the erdtree is generally pretty awful. Volcano Manor also orders you to hunt tarnished who are pretty good people like Tarsog as well as, you know, eating people. The Dung Eater is the Dung Eater, enough said. Those who live in death are, actually no they don't seem that bad. Goldmask is damaging simply because he's so enigmatic. The frenzied flame is nihilism taken to an extreme. Ranni kills all her allies at the end of her quest and started the night of black knives. Miqella is implied to be manipulating everyone around him for his own benefit. Informative and relaxing at the same time, despite the darkness of the information itself haha As for the question, I think rebelling against the Golden Order is all well and good, and most likely would require some level of sacrifice to achieve. His methods clearly went too far in a number of ways, but it seems that where Rykard truly failed at his stated goal is when he lost his ambition. At some point after the war between Volcano Manor and the capital, he seems to have lost the drive to actually attempt to defeat or devour the gods, despite his grandiose claims. He became content to just sit around in his chamber and wait for Tanith to deliver lunch to him on a silver platter All of their plans revolve around pitting Tarnished against each other to find only the best meals to him, rather than actually making any progress toward their goals, like you do with other Npc questlines, like Ranni's

I was FLABBERGASTED upon returning to the game after hearing Miss Chalice's voice and realizing how much she sounds like Melina and Ranni. FLABBERGASTED.

I perceive the ''Lands between'' to be exactly that, the world / purgatory between a certain fantasy world/universe and its afterlife. Every aspect of the lands between consist of pain, grief, turmoil ,suffering or sad desperation. All the beings in the Lands Between are sent there after death in the real realm ,to either suffer in this purgatory or to rule over/maintain the Lands Between (as a ''god, demigod or Elden lord.). Endless rebirth into a hellscape until the correct criteria is met for the being to pass on to the afterlife, heaven or hell. The Twin Bird is the representation of this. The black death bird transports them to hell or the Red Death bird transports them to ‘’heaven’’. Even with the ferryman of Greek mythology seen across the Lands Between , one can see that the Lands Between is the transition stage between life (in this fantasy universe) and the afterlife of this fantasy universe. We even have the Valkyries of Norse mythology , Melania + her daughters whose sole purpose it is ,to identify great warriors that HAS FALLEN IN BATTLE and to carry them to the afterlife of this fantasy universe. Prator Rykard, a symbol of Egyptian Mythology ,the serpent god Apophis , demon of chaos, who had the form of a serpent and was the foe of the sun god, Re (Foe of the current order) Apopis threatened the underworld….the lands between. The serpent devouring itself , a symbol of constant destruction and renewal… The entire realm of the ‘’Lands between’’ is a realm which depicts the transition/deliverance of the ones whom have died, to the afterlife Christian/Greek/Norse/Egyptian/Japanese kegare, thus the ‘’Lands Between’’ is the realm of transitioning from the world of a certain fantasy universe and its afterlife via purgatory. The Thrones of the NOX ‘’Night king’’ = king of darkness. These gigantic skeletons are like eldridge beings, ruling over the Eternal cities , as they sit there, they are undead, dormant, until a suitable amount of lost souls are brought in front of them. Upon which they wake and devour the essence of all the tormented peoples in front of them, sending the devoured to hell. Thus all the beings in front of them are left petrified, left in their state of anguish, screaming in torment and pain and fear , in doing so the eldridge lords gain power to rule further. The ferryman of Greek mythology seen across the Lands Between are of his kin, his servants whom serve the same purpose , to either lead the damned in purgatory to the afterlife , or to lead them to the Night king…

Idk why and I feel a little bad about it, but Raya brings out my weird sickness I get when around other peoples blood. I literally gag uncontrollably until I run away from her. It makes me wonder if fromsoft did something intentional with her design to make me feel like that, considering where she's from

Aww I think she's cute. I would totally own a Raya plushie.

It annoys me how blatantly evil the Volcano Manor is because none of my characters would ever want to join them, but if you don't you don't get all the goodies and recourses the quests provide. Though in Diallos's case its probably for the best.

Oh, I didn't know about Rya's "true form". That's why is always nice to watch lore videos even if you've done the quests yourself. PS: I know people've told many times, but you've got such a calming, beautiful voice 😇

What an interesting video, you have a pretty cool way to explain what you have to explain ! In France we have Loudic who do some great video about the Lore of that about this deep game. Rykard could have gone far, his fight for oppression is kind of a metaphor... I think he was worthy of his mission. ( I like the paralelel I made between Aldrich and Rykard )

I'd honestly irl have done nothing but talked to her, let her learn the less harsh truth of her have being wanted. And loved, by Tannith Lady of Volcano Manor. In game I will give her the potion, let her forget. Poor innocent child.

..oof. I actually sat & thought for ten minutes after Rya asked me to kill her. I mean.. it's a tragic world, so I did it. ...then beat myself up abt it for a week learning that she actually overcomes her despair. I was no one's champion that day. -_-

My guess is that Rykard birthed Zorayas as an act of adultery. He then gave Tanith the tonic so that she would forget his adultery but she refused to do so, staying devoted to Rykard and opting to raise Zorayas as her own. As for what happened to Daedicar (Zorayas's mother)...I think Daedicar may have been the god serpent, but was killed. I think this story is about a god (Rykard) making a pact with a demon (Daedicar). Per Daedicar's Woe's description, "Disturbing likeness of a woman whose skin was flayed. She smiles with a serene tenderness. It is said that this woman, named Daedicar, indulged in every form of adultery and wicked pleasure imaginable, giving birth to a myriad of grotesque children." The key words there are "adultery" and "flayed". Who do you find in the ritual room but a Godskin Noble. Godskins carry flaying weapons which could explain why Daedicar was flayed. Perhaps it was Tanith who sent the Godskin Noble to the manor in an act of jealousy? Nevertheless, in the end, Tanith is likely responsible for Zorayas's good nature by raising her as her own child, hence her not wanting her to learn the truth that she was actually the child of a demon. Just my take.

But was daedicus a demigod? The godskins flayed them too... I think... but tanith really kinda seems like raya's mom... and Raya is the only female manserpent we know of
