I feel like there’s also another point that’s worth mentioning - Harvey’s anxiety and loneliness. He’s a perfect example/depiction of someone who’s constantly going through social anxiety, and very likely, panic. The way he hides behind a bush during the egg festival, fear for heights, not leaving his clinic for most of the time, being scared of the farmer when they first met, finding a “safe spot” on farm - speaks a lot about a person who experiences day to day crippling anxiety.

@Br00ke2912 жыл бұрын
Yes. I actually heard the creator used most of his personal issues onto the characters. Like the social anxiety and stuff which is why it’s shown pretty well and not badly. I kinda wish I got with Harvey now but I’m glad I got shane. Shane’s character also deals with alcoholism and depression which makes his character so sad
@emmathetismgirlie212 жыл бұрын
I actually heard a good theory on the " Jas situation ". It explains that maybe Marnie and Jas are not actually related at all. After Jas' parents deaths, Shane's depression began to worsen, and worrying about Jas being taken from him and put into foster care, he asked Marnie to help him take care of her, and she agreed
@ThwipThwipBoom2 жыл бұрын
Good theory
@jamzee_2 жыл бұрын
The way i interpreted it, mainly because i know an extremely similar situation irl, and since im a godfather of a cousin of mine myself, Shane has legal custody due to Godfather laws. You dont usually see it nowadays, but in the past, if all relatives outside of aunts and uncles passed, the Godparents of the child are to take custody. Obviously this has been reformed to where aunts and uncles take custody second after grandparents. Godparents can still get custody though, as long as they are proven to be their godparent. Since Shane is Jes’ godparent, and Marnie is merely Shane’s aunt and not Jes’, Shane is technically next in line for custody from Jes’ parents as her grandparents are most likely deceased too. If you want the family tree, its best to assume it like this. Marnie has most likely 2 siblings, one being Shane’s parent, and the other being Jes’ parent. After Jes was born Shane, being her closest cousin, was dubbed Godfather. In old days, before grandparents or aunts and uncles were given custody of an orphaned child, the godparent could choose to take custody of the child. Most likely Marnie’s parents are deceased, meaning there are no Grandparents for Jes. When jes’ parents died, Shane got choice to become her legal guardian. Shane then asked his aunt Marnie, if she’d be willing to help take care of Jes as he isnt fully able. also hes a drunk so… that too.

She notices you're worried about her driving the bus, knowing her alcoholism, and she tells you that she always makes sure she's sober before she drives. Also, after you upgrade their trailer to a house, Pam tells Penny that she's going to get better and change herself. I have to say, Shane is probably the most realistic character when it comes to depicting what suicidal people think and act like. It doesn't try to sugar coat it with "Oh he's just a bit sad" he literally wants to die and is most likely only still around because his love for Marnie and Jas are holding him back, but at the same time he's not constantly in a state of "Oh woe is me", at the egg festival and other community events, he's actually pretty chill, polite and happy. Having first hand experience with depression and having been suicidal myself, it was strangely refreshing to see someone like me portrayed in a sensitive manner whilst not completely trivialising what I went through and its why I still play Stardew Valley and always get Shane to at least 8 hearts to try and help him out, even if I don't go on to romance him.

Something I'm surprised no one ever mentions, probably because it's small in comparison, is Elliott's relationship with his family. In his two heart event, he mentions how they basically tried to crush his dreams of being a successful writer despite his very obvious talent in writing and speech at that time. He points out their blatant pessimism, and you never hear about them at all after that. You have to wonder what drives a young man like Elliott to be *so miserable* with his life at home that he buys a run down cabin to GET AWAY from his parents. It feels like maybe they were TOO overbearing or controlling of him. And the cherry on top is how clearly attention starved he is once you start dating him. He's overjoyed to see you, writes poems for you, snuggles you after a cold day in the rain. Its sweet, but it makes you wonder.

Penny gets paid to teach the kids If you marry her, she talks about going in to WORK in town on the days she tutors them Sure, Jas and Vincent only go to school three days a week (excluding summer vacation and holidays), but conversely, they are getting a 1:2 teacher-student ratio. From that perspective, they're likely getting more attention with their studies than they would in a town with a more typical public school system. Not to mention, while Pam is unemployed, it's likely that Penny is supporting the household financially from her teaching gig, although we don't really know the state of long-term unemployment and welfare benefits in Pelican Town Although Penny and Pam don't have much, they never seem at death's door financially or otherwise So, while Penny certainly is taking an interest in the children and supporting their education as best she can as a stand-in teacher, it's unfair to say she's being uncompensated and that the children's studies are being neglected by their parents You can even find Vincent's report card so it's clear that Jody is taking notice of her son's education

As much as I long to hate Pam, I can't. One event you have with her/Penny is where you help Penny clean up the trailer and Pam gets pissed off, claiming she had everything exactly where she wanted it. But, after your character visibly leaves Pam makes it obvious that she's not mad that Penny cleaned up, but it was more anger out of embarrassment of an "outsider" seeing how shitty their living condition is. She also has dialog where she says that Penny is all that she has left, and makes it clear that you better not EVER hurt Penny in any way. Plus, she tends to talk about Penny a lot, as if she's bragging about her. It's obvious that she used to be a lovingly devoted mother to Penny, until the male parental figure up and abandoned them both. Which makes me want to find the dirtbag and turn him into fertilizer.

Ever considered that section was just poorly written, like maybe ConcernedApe just made a mistake and didn't correct it? Clint may be virtually spineless, but he's not a bad character. Even goes out of his way after befriending him by giving you the ability to break your own guides. Definitely a misunderstood character.
@woobgamer5210 Жыл бұрын
@@ronwatford7331 I'm pretty sure its intentional. Dude always could never try to win over Emily, not until his 6 heart, however if you are at 8 hearts with Emily and saw her cutscene, even if you don't persue dating Emily, he is too sad to try and ask her out, because HE thinks you got to her first. Clint is so bad with trying to start dating because A. he is too scared, B. he fails to understand the concept of 'just friends'. C. He literally complains so much about why girls dont want him, he is designed to be a nice guy, thats why he is not a batchelor, he only wants Emily. Which is quite sad if you think about it, a player could fall for Clint's shyness and plight for wanting love and affection, yet he is doomed to fail at love unless the player doesn't become close with Emily, and chooses to help him ask Emily out to a festival (as friends by the way so even when he wins, he fails)

THANK YOU for talking about how nice Penny is. I have seen so much Penny slander that she's boring, that liking her means you have a saviour complex etc. Someone needed to air out how good she is.
@wallamazoo01 Жыл бұрын
I had my guy marry her because of her unconditional love for the community of Stardew Valley. He wanted more out of life and decided to open the letter from grandpa. He never realized it was possible to meet a woman with such deep compassion. But by Concerned Ape’s dialogue written for Penny, it’s clear she fell in love with the PC the moment you meet her. So while her cutscenes aren’t romantic like leah’s or trippy like Emily’s, you never see a side of Penny that isn’t a natural her. Later I learned it’s not at all the PC feels bad for Penny. You give her an opportunity to be alive, to be a mom, and she loves taking care of the farm much more than the trailer. It’s perfectly fine she is bashful about helping out on the farm. I’d honestly say that Penny is truly the destined love interest for the player. It takes an equally compassionate farmer to understand Penny’s “simplicity.” I know it all too well myself. Almost 10 years ago I married a woman who Penny, for all intents and purposes, seems based on.

Shane is one of the best written depressed characters in fictional history. He actually feels like a real person who's dealing with depression, the dark humor, the bleak "wise" advice, the rampant alcoholism, his unhealthy diet. It's all been seen before and is displayed ever so brilliantly in an indie game that not even most AAA game studios would come CLOSE to recreating. I always pursue his heart events every playthrough. Even if I don't date or marry him, I at least can be comforted that he's doing better in the town than he was before I arrived. Plus, *_BLUE CHICKENS!!!_*

Alex is such a sweet guy. He has these big dreams of being a sports star and comes off as arrogant. Shane's 6 Heart cutscene highlights my single biggest criticism of the game, the way that Stardew Valley handles the heart events as separate from gameplay, it creates a SERIOUS mood whiplash when instead of regaining control in front of Harvey's Clinic you regain control from where you triggered the heart event like nothing actually happened. With other cases this isn't as much of an issue due to the more light-hearted nature of them, but this one in particular suffers the most from the gameplay/story disconnect that the heart cutscenes cause. I would have liked it where the heart events actually have an effect on the world in a more direct way, like having Shane still be in the clinic for the day. Would it be annoying if you were trying to get to the ranch for stuff, yes, however it would make the more serious tone heart events feel more connected to the world than these separate things that seem to exist in a vacuum of what's happening in the immediate vicinity.
@moyaienjoyer30372 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the opposite problem happened to me. I went to go deliver something at night, I forgot what specifically, and triggered Shane’s first cutscene where he gives you a drink. Unfortunately they had to be realistic, and while cutscenes usually don’t take time, this one actually does debuff you and decrease your movement speed. I got back before 2 am but it was still kind of annoying

While Shane 6 heart event answer are all neutral (in a sense it still somewhat help him and didn't effect your friendship). I think the 4th option is the most suitable one. - Option 1 is basically indirectly ignore his true feeling/emotion and try to make him 'see the good of the world'. - Option 2 while it may seem innocent enough, it's almost sounded like you were trying to guilt-tripping him using Jas. - Option 3 is almost like option 2, but i could've swore there's a dialogue saying something about him not believing in Yoba (i think it's random? I forgot, my bad). - Option 4 while it may seem like a gamble, it also in a way trying to give Shane a shoulder to lean on and helping him until he was able to walk by himself. It somewhat sounds like the player offering to be Shane anchor, someone outside of his family that still care about him despite seeing all his ugly flaws. Please do remember, while giving words of encouragement to a depressed person isn't necessary a bad thing (it's a great thing in fact). But don't forget to actually *show* them that you care, sometimes just spending time with them could help. Take care.

Yeah, something that really hurts is trivializing it, or God forbid "Oh, you're depressed? Just cheer up!"
@X-SPONGED2 жыл бұрын
But it can also be a double edged sword by saying, "If you wanna end you life here, it's ok. I'll vouch for you". Personally, I like Jas' Option more. Emphasizing he needs to fulfill his duty as a Godfather and be there for Jas. He seems to also really care for her which would make this statement more impactful.
@Reicha2 жыл бұрын
I've had to use 2 in a dire situation, but then I followed up with a modified 4 which I by far prefer as both a long-time affected person and someone with affected friends. It grinds your self-worth down in a way, to hear that you should stay alive when you're miserable, for other people's sake - but it's a good anchor in the moment. I would have gone with 2 if Shane had seemed anxiously on-the-edge and flighty, but dejected and energyless I felt safe with no.4.
@Nixahma2 жыл бұрын
As someone who has had depression: People with depression rarely want to hear "it gets better". Chances are, they've heard that their whole life, or they just don't feel strong enough to hold out that long. Phrases like these sound hopeful, but more often than not, they're just meaningless phrases to the recipient, and sometimes even to the one speaking them. From my experience (not only with myself, but also talking to suicidal people), suicidal people really appreciate having someone be down-to-earth with them, even if it's not strictly positive. Option four is a great example of this.
@woobgamer5210 Жыл бұрын
I feel like option 2 is probably the best words Shane needed to here. Like sure, he feels worse in the moment that Jas needs him, but, we're clearly right, Jas DOES need him. Jas only has Marnie, who is usually working the farm, Vincent who wouldn't understand her, Penny who she only meets with to learn, and Shane, the guy who's been there for her since she was a baby. Jas, NEEDS Shane, Shane NEEDS Jas. Which makes it sad when Shane is stuck working at Joja and when he's not doing that, getting hamerred until way after Jas goes to bed. TBH Makes me wish Shane's 7 heart cutscene wasn't him filming an advertisement for Joja, but instead getting so sick of Joja working him to the bone for so little, with Jas wanting to hang out with Shane due to feeling super lonely, and Shane finally snapping and going over to Joja to yell at Morris and demand his release, while Marnie is shopping in an aisle to watch, and when Morris tries to pull the 'remember, youre here forever' card, Marnie reminds Morris that she despite being more on the plumper side, she is the strongest woman in Pelican Town, and could legit destroy him, so Morris gets taken down a notch ego wise and lamentably lets Shane go

tbh I have a theory that Gunther is practically Vincent's therapist. Think about it, his father is a war veteran who is a completely different man when he returns, meaning Vincent essentially 'lost' his father, Jodi, his mom, is stressed out dealing with Alex, a problem child who barely listens to her, who also barely acts like a brother to Vincent. Maybe Vincent, despite being an obliviously happy go lucky kid, deals with severe loneliness that comes up in the night, and going to Gunther late at night helps with that loneliness, with the library being such a calming place and Gunther wishing the best for him. Maybe he sees Gunther as a second father.

Personally i think Mr.Qi and Grandpa are either highly advanced Wizards or Deity and what we are seeing is their astral projections. I say that because Mr.Qi started out as a "normal" boy and became extraordinary through willpower, It's almost the same as in Grandpa's letter he talks about losing his sight of what mattered most and decided to get rid of everything to move. It's almost as if Mr.Qi is a wizard or deity of Mystery and Fortune while Grandpa is a wizard or deity of Life and Death. I say that Mr.Qi is representation of Mystery as he says in the dialogue that without Mystery the world is bland and Fortune because he runs a Casino that's being paid for generously and he also supplies the loot in dungeons which could be affected by luck,His possibly a good friend or the boss of Welwick the fortune teller as you could see her in his Casino with a hangover,and as we know it's exclusive to members. Meanwhile i said that Grandpa is a representation of Life is because he sought the most in life and went to Stardew valley to start a farm that's creates life in the form of crops and animals. His presentation of Death is rather shallow but him appearing in our Dreams even though his dead could mean he could have some control over it,he also appears to be sleeping and wearing a nightcap which could represent Eternal rest. All of it is a bit of stretch but it's something that i came up with when i was scrolling through the Wiki

Gus Theory because he deserves more love- Gus not only feeds Linus (as seen in Linus' two heart cutscene when Gus catches him looting through the trash at night) despite being in financial trouble himself. I also suspect was asked by Mayor Lewis to keep an eye on Pam after she crashed the bus. Its strongly suggested through the dialogue, and Pam grumbiness with her constantly demanding Gus to give her "the strongest" while asking us the Player for booze, that Gus also may be gradually watering down her drinks as a way to subtley combat her alchoholism. Which is why he is so patient with her, knowing her attitude is due to withdrawal. We also learn through a cutscene that she has a tab large enough to put Gus out of buisness, which may have been a factor is Gus trying to get her to sober up. But in his defense it seems to work, as one of the quests on the long term bulletin you can take is giving her a bunch of "potato juice" showing she is trying to quit.
@katnissever-meme93182 жыл бұрын
I wonder if Mayor Lewis would've been willing to fix the bus if Pam wasn't the town drunk. Maybe she started the job before she became an alcoholic, and when the bus finally crashed due to drunk driving Mayor Lewis claimed that there was a lack of funds because he didn't want her back on the roads.

ngl this kinda just gives them more character. makes them feel a little bit more realistic, when they all have their own little flaws. for me i feel like that just makes it even more worth it to befriend all of them, because their dialogue progressively gets better and suggests that they become better as people aswell (easiest examples are Alex and Haley who outright treat everyone else like trash at the start) which really makes it feel like you're actually doing something for them, despite the only actual interaction you can have with them is by giving them gifts and seeing them at the right places at the right times it makes me hopeful that in the future, ConcernedApe will add more opportunities to do more for them and help fix their problems

With Shane and Jas and Marnie, I assume that Shane became estranged some how, and Jas never knew him growing up. Then her parents died, and she was Shane’s responsibility. Either Shane was already a depressed alcoholic, or Jas’s parent’s death caused this, but either way, he wasn’t equipped to raise a kid by himself. He and Jas moved in with Marnie, the only stable family either of them had. Shane didn’t want Jas to know that they were related, probably because he didn’t want to explain why he was estranged, and so just claimed he was her god father, and didn’t go any deeper. I assume they are definitely related judging by the hair colour. Also, interesting fact, even if you have godparents, you usually end up going to close family and not your godparents. I think it’s more likely that Shane is Jas’s brother, because of the hair colour. I also can’t think why Marnie would allow some a depressed drunk that she hardly knew to live with her, unless he was Jas’s brother, and they were both sent to live with Marnie.

I'm not sure if anyone else has commented about this, but that heart event is not the only reason people think Clint is creepy. He stalks Emily at work, and even worse, he sees her as an object. The two are friends, but Clint's only interest is to win over Emily romantically. We know this because in the fashion heart event, after everyone leaves Emily's house, Emily and the player huddle together and it seems to have a romantic context. Suddenly Clint walks in, Assumes that the player and Emily are together, and congratulates the player, as if they've won a prize. After that, Clint stops talking to Emily, as in one of her dialogues she mentions that Clint hasn't been talking to her as much and she's concerned about their friendship. So long story short, Clint views women as objects, prizes to be won, and becomes angry when Emily does not share feelings with him. He sucks.

Another note for the Pam segment: you can help their situation by contracting Robin to build a house for them, which seems to touch Pam enough to the point of her wanting to put more of an effort into quitting drinking. A later cutscene in their new home has Pam praying at a Yoba shrine and saying that she has been turning to religion to try and help her find the strength to quit, but feels ashamed because she still slips up.

Ok but actually Grandpa was so comforting to me for some reason. I would just summon him when I felt down even if not much was different. I almost cried when I got the statue of perfection and realized I couldn't summon him anymore

thats not why we call clint a creep. he is insistent with emily despite her ignoring his crush on her which should have been enough of a sign, he has dialogue at the movies that only happens if you're a woman in which he says something like "uh you can rest ur head on my shoulder... if you want.... ehe...." doesnt matter if you're married or not, sometimes when calling him with the telephone he'll say "oh... player... your voice sounds really nice over the phone..." which is creepy. he just generally acts like a creep to the player and is overly obsessive about emily

Penny was the girl I went after in my first playthrough because I really liked just how kind she was. But in my subsequent farms I went through all the spouses just to see what they had to offer and now I go after Abigail because I really like her story and you know purple-haired goth-ish adventurer-wizard...

I think the reason why they called Winchester sky people was because they lived in a space but there is a really great cuts saying that you can see in the starting of the game on the main menu it’s a spaceship crashing down to the ground so that could possibly be theoretically be why they call themselves “sky people”

The only bad thing I can say about Penny, is that she is too kind for her own good. She cares to much about others, and ignoring to care for herself. So when the player comes in, and marries her, she not only start caring for herself, but she get that monetary support to be able to help and care for the others. She is just too sweet.

BTW... the suspicious shape of the diamond like insert in the shrine for Grandpa made me think about putting diamonds on there as tribute... and it WORKS... That's how I got the perfection statue as before that I had 3 candles not 4. Try it 😊👍🏻

This works because the diamond summons grandpa that night,candles lit are determined by a "points" system

Something I feel like should be mentioned in this video is how you can sacrifice your own children and how they will haunt you for the rest of the game. I married Haley we have children I decided the children were an inconvenience to me for whatever reason and sacrificed them at the dark shrine of selfishness turning them into doves and sending them away. Until recently.... It's Friday fall 26th. Playing with my sister I go to check my TV and there's a weird channel with no name and just "???" I click it and the screen is completely black except for an ancient doll being on the TV and with the dialogue, "You brought this upon yourself..." "now I'm free... hee hee hee !" There's a flash a bat sound effect noise plays and out pops and ancient doll. But it doesn't end there. It's Tuesday winter 9th. My phone is ringing in my house and I find it to be weird considering I don't get calls anymore. I go to pick it up and this is the dialogue I get. "You place the receiver to your ear" "and are met with a roiling abrasive static" "But wait... beneath it all you can make out" "something else an otherworldly voice...." "Y-O-U H-A-V-E F-O-R-S-A-K-E-N U-S" And I stand there for 20 seconds kinda scared. And it still doesn't end there. I go to change my hairstyle at wizard's Tower and accidentally walk on the red circle teleporting me to the witches hut. I'm instantly greeted with two ancient dolls glowing red flying around and trying to attack me AND I'M RUNNING AROUND AND FREAKING OUT. And they also deal pretty decent damage. You can kill them but they just keep coming back. Also when you kill them they turn into black Ravens and fly away but wait a few seconds and go back inside and they're back again.... Also this may or may not be related to this whole occurrence but killing them seeing them turn into black Ravens instantly hit me that it seems like there were a lot more Ravens attacking my crops than usual. So I speculate it might be related. But clearly all of these events are my children haunting me for the rest of my life. Like not only the fact that you can sacrifice your children is dark but that they continue to haunt you throughout the game. AND AFTER THE WHOLE HAUNTED ANCIENT DOLL INCIDENT ME AND MY SISTER AGREE I PROBABLY DOOMED PELICAN TOWN.... And agreed that it probably won't stop Pierre from being greedy. Also it's even more creepy that spouses like my wife Haley won't say anything or even notice you sacrificing your children like they didn't even exist.

AND NOW I FEEL GUILTY AND WISH I COULD BRING THEM BACK AND MY SISTER THINKS I'VE DOOMED PELICAN TOWN.

It's not uncommon for step-parents to treat their step-kids unfairly, especially when Maru is his and Robin's daughter. what especially doesn't help is that we know from a heart event with you, Demetrius and Maru that he has no issue with "subtle warnings" about getting in the way of Maru learning and becoming a scientist like himself. Actually, does he even ever talk about Sebastion?

I think for Jas, the idea that Marnie is her aunt is more of an honorary title, like how family friend's of your parents are aunt or uncle. More over, I've always thought Shane actually had something going on with either her mother or father, and when they died, it broke him. Seeing Jas alone and being her godfather, placing her in the home of Marnie, his actual aunt, was the best thing that he could do for her as he's depressed and grieving.

I didn’t start working on the NPCs til year 3. Also in my opinion the best gifts for them are pale ale and coffee and salads for the others. If you just go into the tavern twice a week and give each person a pale ale you can get it done a lot faster.

people always talk about how bad they feel for Penny, but I just feel bad for both Pam and Penny in general if we continue on the theory that Pam only picked up her drinking habits AFTER her husband left, then that just makes feel worse for her i can't blame a person who became worse if they are only half of the reason that they became worse
@sup16022 жыл бұрын
Pam did have a job before being the town drunk, she was a trucker and drove all over the county. Maybe this war caused her to quit for penny's sake then the husband left.
