The story of "The Great Gig In the Sky" has a little more to it. On the first take, Clare Torrey started singing the usual pop stuff she was used to singing as a session singer: "Ooh, baby, baby" etc. Pink Floyd said, "No, we definitely don't want that". But even the band themselves didn't know what they really wanted. She then had the idea of using her voice as a worldess instrument, and you know the result. They recorded two takes and took the best of both. Clare Torrey was then paid the 20 pounds she had earned as a session singer (including a little extra for working on a Sunday!) and left Abbey Road. She never thought she'd hear the album, that her work wouldn't be used (even though the band had seemed pleased with her work) and it wasn't until several months later that she saw DSOTM in a shop window. Looking at the sleeve notes, she realised her work had made the record. Many years later she sued Pink Floyd, arguing that her singing on TGGITS was so integral to the song, and the success of the album, that she should have been paid a lot more, given the album's phenomenal success. The case was going to court, but she and Pink Floyd came to an agreement before it got there. Nobody knows how much she received in settlement, but it seems Pink Floyd did not fight her and agreed with what she said, which is undeniable. As part of the settlement, Pink Floyd agreed to credit her as a co-writer of the song on future releases of the album, which is only right. By the way, your figure of 11 million copies of DSOTM sold is a little low. It's not certain how many copies have been sold, but it's officially 25 million and could be as high as 45 million. There was a vinyl pressing plant in Germany that was *just* printing copies of DSOTM at one point. I myself have been through several copies since I bought it when it was released in 1973. After 50 years, I still play it regularly, still enjoy it after probably thousands of listens and I know I always will. I cannot describe to you how revolutionary it was in terms of...well, everything. The production broke completely new ground, thanks in large part to a very talented young studio engineer called Alan Parsons, who later formed his own band, The Alan Parsons Project, who were incredibly successful (and similarly had amazing production). It sometimes sounds cliched to talk about how amazing this album is. Because it’s so well known and revered. But when you actually take the time to listen and give it your attention, even after hundreds of times, it still sounds fresh, spiritual even.

13 million? ppppfff At last count "The Dark Side of the Moon" was at 45 million sales and counting. It is the fourth biggest selling album of all time.

Before Dark Side of the Moon was Echoes. Their first masterpiece. Roger Waters described Echoes as being the moment when they'd finished their apprenticeships, they'd done their learning, they'd produced a masterpiece and now on to something bigger. Roger said it was like "Ok guys, our apprenticeships are over, get your aprons on, we're going to do Dark Side of the Moon"

"Pink Floyd", music and lyrics that make you feel like you're soaring and stabs you in the heart at the same time!!! It's because most of their lyrics are simply very true statements about life or feelings! You read one lyric and inevitably go "YES"!!!

In the days of vinyl, record players would allow you stack albums. The central spindle had a mechanical device built in that would drop the next record when the first one stopped playing. Furthermore, many record players had tone arms and needles that acted more like lathes rather than sound reproduction devices. Needless to say, albums wore out after a while. DSOTM was the first album people went back and purchased it again to replace it after the quality deteriorated. Only true audiophiles used turntables that didn't allow multiple albums. Another factor in replacing albums was drug use. Stoned people tended to scratch, drop or otherwise abuse their records. To maintain hi-fidelity, the albums had to be replaced. This contributed to the ongoing sales. People loved this album so much, they had to keep it fresh. (I know all this because I was one of those people!)

I was laying down and listening to the album. There was this long gentle portion that lulled me to sleep. Then Tim came on (15:39 in your video) and I about fell out of bed. What a way to get woken up! Now it makes me laugh when I think about it.

YOU MAY BE CORRECT THAT PINK FLOYD WAS THE FIRST IF NOT ONE OF THE VERY FIRST BANDS TO USE A SYNTHESIZER IN THEIR MUSIC!!! ANOTHER BAND FROM THAT TIME THAT USED THE MOOG SYNTHESIZER VERY VERY OFTEN IN THEIR MUSIC WAS A BAND CALLED EMERSON, LAKE, AND PALMER OR ELP!! LISTEN TO THE ALBUM BRAIN SALAD SURGERY BY EMERSON, LAKE, AND PALMER TO HEAR HOW THE SYNTH WAS USED!!! THERE'S EVEN A DRUM SOLO WHERE THE DRUMS ARE PLAYED THROUGH THE SYNTH!! IT'S A TRACK CALLED TOCCATA!! OHH YEAH!!

This album is covered live on the second disc of the “Pulse” concert. Been listening to this for 50 years, this year.

Richard Wright said in an interview I saw that he had heard a certain chord while listening to a Miles Davis record and he was trying to find a way to incorporate it into one of their songs and this was where he was able to place it. I've been listening to this song since the 70's and I still get a bit emotional every time I hear it, especially the chord change at 33:18

IF YOU'RE AMAZED AT HOW THEY CAN GET THE SOUND TO GO FROM ONE SIDE OF THE HEADPHONES TO THE OTHER, IMAGINE HOW IT WAS TO BE AT AN OUTDOOR CONCERT WITH PINK FLOYD AND THEY HAD A QUADRAPHONIC SPEAKER SETUP!! THE ALBUM WAS ALSO PRESSED AND RELEASED IN QUAD (SHORT FOR QUADRAPHONIC) AND IF YOU HAD A FOUR SPEAKER SETUP AT YOUR HOME THE SOUND WOULD ACTUALLY TRAVEL IN A CIRCLE NOT JUST FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER!!! AND I WAS CONSIDERABLY YOUNGER THAN YOU ARE WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS!!! BUT I DID ATTEND A PINK FLOYD CONCERT DURING THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON TOUR IN 1975, OR COULD HAVE BEEN THE ANIMALS TOUR BUT THEY DID A LOT FROM DARK SIDE OF THE MOON AND THEY HAD A QUADRAPHONIC SETUP!! THEY WOULD HAVE THE SOUND GO COMPLETELY AROUND IN A CIRCLE WHICH ENCIRCLED THE PEOPLE ON THE FIELD!!! THE VENUE WAS AN OUTDOOR STADIUM!! IT WAS PRETTY AWESOME!!!!

the guys were definately thinking on a different level of existance when they wrote this album.thats the problem with recording a perfect album, you can never follow it up with anything near equal.

Never pause or stop Pink Floyd EVER!! Sit back, don't say anything and listen!! You need to learn how to listen to Pink Floyd because you are pausing and stopping way to much!!
