"Maybe the darkest side of wellness is that too often it's not even about wellness. It's about targeting women's insecurities." Desi Lydic warns about the dangerous trappings of the "wellness" industry, from expensive snake oil products to dangerous medical alternative trends, in the latest installment of Long Story Short. #DailyShow #Comedy #DesiLydic

This is exactly my experience working in healthcare. When coworkers make fun of some of the quackery our patients engage in, I'm quite quick to point out that the wellness industry exists because huge swathes of our population are not taken seriously by medical professionals. It's our job to sit down and explain the "why's" behind medical reasoning instead of just dismissing patients as "non-compliant", and see if we can work with patients instead of demand that they bend to our care plans.

Yup. I was tired all the time, went to doctor, ran a few tests. Told me there was nothing wrong with me, I was just like "all the other young mothers that just had a baby". YEARS later I went to another doctor and asked them to check my iron levels again - the number was in the SINGLE digits! Another situation - Over the course of TWO years I went to FIVE different doctors before I finally found one that was willing to treat my low thyroid levels.

Patients are often blamed for things they have little control over. Not everything boils down to lack of willpower and poor life choices. But that's exactly how it's been framed, not only in Medicine but by Society at large. So it's no wonder ppl are more than willing to shell out for weight loss products, detoxification products, vitamins and the like. What are ppl supposed to do when they've done everything recommended in the care plan but still suffer the disease? The Wellness Industry is just cashing in where Medicine has failed. I've had so many incredibly bad experiences with Doctors who've done nothing but blame me for things I CAN'T control. That's some bad Medicine.

It's great to have that shoved down our throats, again. I guess it's understandable because you lot have some crazy politicians somehow passing even more insane laws over there. Really, Northern Ireland needs to be used as an example of what happens when abortion is illegal. It might work better because Northern Ireland is... well, white. And many Americans (you're president included) are hilariously, overly, proud of any Irish roots they may have.

I’ve worked with several student and I think that they are getting taught to be more and more aware of the biases that have plagued medicine for so long, so I’m hopeful about that. Oh and I’d love for there to be mention of the weight loss industry being a part of the problem.

To be fair, it's not just women. Doctors are so terrified of getting sued and drug-seeking that they're all but paralyzed until things are too late. Back when I had gall stones but didn't know it yet, I had an attack while driving cross-country, and had no choice but to call an ambulance to the middle of nowhere. So they come with a police officer out to the middle of this field, at least 10 miles from the nearest small town, and the whole time both the EMT and cop are asking me loaded questions in an effort to get me to admit I just did it to score some free drugs. And it was like, really? You think I set all of _this_ up just for some Tylenol-3?

Awesome. I suffer from Lipoedema, a fat disorder often misdiagnosed as obesity...... It affects one in ten women but most practicioners in the male dominated Healthcare industry, especially cosmetic surgeons, exploit healthy insecure women into unnecessary procedures like BBL etc rather than focus on women with actual medical conditions that desperately need surgical intervention to restore their mobility and quality of life. The misogyny surrounding what women's bodies should look like and their rights over their own reproductive systems is as illogical as it is traumatic for all our daughters.... Everyone's metabolism is different and women are not a hegemony. Preach, Desi 💚

My favorite part of needing healthcare is showing up in the ER with severe pain and having the staff watch me writhe and moan for hours until they get their scan results back showing nothing because they had to CYA and dismiss my complaints of severe muscle spasms. Only then do they give you relief. I have MS. I get treated like a drug seeker with every ER visit. Every single one. I've even had an ER doc dismiss and infection that was going septic, because he thought it was a toe crease, despite the fact that foot was swollen 2x the size of the other. If I sued every doctor that dismissed my life-threatening symptoms, I'd own a hospital or two by now. Thank the goddess for legalization. I can manage the severe spasms myself now instantaneously, instead of writhing in an ER for hours begging for help and getting none because DRUG SEEKERS! They'll do this even when I tell them straight up I can't take opiates of any kind. Straight up tell them I can't tolerate opiates, and in their eyes, I'm still drug-seeking, attention-seeking, anything but telling them the god's honest truth about my level 10 pain. And yes, it gets so severe it makes me pass out. But drug seekers! I've had so many bad experiences with ER docs, I've been saying since the last one that it was the last ER visit for me. That doctor would have let me go septic. I should have demanded a refund on that visit for my insurance company.

Funny and sad. When I had concerning issues my doctor kept pushing “well you’re a mom”. Everything I said came back to the fact I was a mom. When I kept trying to get real help he finally decided that this mom just needed a big ol’bottle of Norco and muscle relaxers. I stopped going to the doctor for years after that.

Yeah I agree with you! All the hosts are just as funny as the next!.. so I think all the hosts should just rotate every week who's going to host the show.. I mean they got more flava than Baskin-Robbins!

Sad line up. All it takes to make a "Nailing host". Is to make sure they shout liberal talking points. Sad times in liberal media. Quality of content is poor.

Desi is doing a great job- but all of the Daily Show regulars have done a great job. And I enjoyed *most* of the guest hosts as well (no- I am not going to name the ones I felt were less funny- humor is subjective). I'd love to see the rotation continue, with a few more guest hosts from the world of comedy/politics/entertainment/arts/activism take a seat at the desk for a day or a week. The variety has been awesome, and has kept me interested in keeping up with the show. And give Josh Johnson a week!

Desi is fantastic! Smart, hilarious, charming (how cute is she when the audience claps and she has that little smile!!), and an inspiring feminist. I love the contrast between her sincere interviews and her clueless field persona. MAKE HER PERMANENT HOST!

After a surgery, I noticed that my abdomen was getting bigger and more taught with time. I mentioned it to a nurse and said I figured the swelling should go down with time, not increase. It basically was dismissed. Long story short, it was EVENTUALLY discovered that I was bleeding into my abdomen. I could have bled to death internally!
