I have been trying to convince my family members to do the same - give up gift giving. We agreed to only give consumables (wine, food, chocolate) and that has made things so much easier. I would like to move towards no gifts for birthdays, etc. too. Thanks so much for that added motivation.

Great job Dara, this is very inspiring and makes me want to have a stronger commitment to tell my family no gift giving during Xmas. I've tried before without success. Maybe I'll try the consumables option only as someone below mentioned.
