I had to speak at a student’s funeral who was a victim of gun violence. That broke me. It happened close to the end of the school year and I told them I couldn’t come back. I loved my kiddos, but I couldn’t face having to speak at another kid’s funeral.

I can't imagine how badly that must have hurt. No child deserves to die, especially in such a violent way. The survivors are probably going to suffer from PTSD for a long time also. It effects everyone that was there and everyone that lost someone that way. It's just not right :( I'm so sorry you went through that. My 5 year old son had his first active shooter drill the other day and he was telling me about it like it was just another part of his day. It was so hard to keep a straight face as he was telling me and showing me what they would do if there was a shooter. I broke down after he fell asleep and just sobbed... every morning when I drop him off at the bus stop I remember to tell him how much I love him and then as he leaves I want to cry because in today's America, we never know if it could be their last day alive. And I live in Florida, there's a lot of crazies here...

Telling my kids I was leaving broke my heart. I wound up in a really bad district that had a really high turn over rate. It was actually the high school I had gone to and all of the teachers who had been there forever who were pillars of the community had left because of admin. All of those kids had such abandonment issues and I had to spend the entire week reassuring them I wasn't leaving because of them. It honestly broke my heart

@@Cainny @Tyler Rouse-Kaminski while this child was also probably genuinely having a crisis situation that would excuse this one incident, OP still has a point. Teachers often have to work with kids who don't have parents that are available to teach them how to function in society. In a lot of those cases, it can be an absent and/or abusive parent but there are also some who just genuinely don't care because they don't want to deal with it. That same parent will then come and reprimand the child's teachers for the child's lack of social skills. Yes, this is an exception to that case. But please know when teachers (or those close to teachers) are talking about the amount of abuse teachers take, it's not every kid and it's not every school and it's not every case. The public education system is just so far past its breaking point that even caring for the kindest and most well behaved children can become a struggle

I taught for 5 years and the last school I was at was the so bad. It was never the kids. Always admin! (I was a preschool teacher) there was a bunch of little things that were super irritating about how this place was run. But my last straw was about a bulletin board! The rule is you had to finish your bulletin board by the last day of the month, I was all finished when my director told me I had to fix my lettering, so I peeled off the letters so I could fix them…. (Side note) my mom had recently passed away very suddenly and it was coming up to my parents anniversary so I asked if I could have that day off and the director said no problem. So I took the letters home to fix and put up the next day (which was the last day of the month) I get a phone call from the director saying how upset she was with me for not finishing my bulletin board blah blah blah. And I was like I thought we had till the end of the month?? You told me to take the letters down and fix them. That’s what I am doing while spending time with my dad in this very hard day for him… She then told me to stay home for the remainder of the week as punishment basically. And someone else would finish my bulletin board. When I got back not only was my bulletin board COMPLETELY CHANGED but the phrase I had on my original board was on my directors board. I felt so disrespected I put in my 2 weeks that day.

My admin also sucked. I was teaching high school so it did kinda suck walking into a 14 year old who stopped being able to mature past 7th grade because COVID saying they didn't wanna do the bleeping work. But like... whatever they're 14. HOWEVER. Admin never disciplined anyone for anything. A kid literally left, got Dunks, hung out in a tree eating his food and drinking his coffee, and then came back with no consequences. 1/3 administrators directly in my building had classroom experience. I kept getting in trouble for not following rules that were never explained to me. About 1/4 of the school year was taken up by things that had nothing to do with my job - extra standardized test prep, additional assignments JUST for admin, writing portfolios (I taught STEM), and regular "fun days" to help kids feel more included. I was so frustrated and overwhelmed and angry with admin I couldn't do it. It broke my heart leaving my kids but I couldn't do it.

She sounds vile. Period. She knew your situation and called you to complain. About lettering. She can shove it up her ass as I'm positive the straightness of the lettering was the least of that schools' problems. If they were capable of having someone help you finish (after all that bs she spouted), they should've offered to help you in the first place. Human kindness is gone in nearly everyone these days. She ought to put kindness in her curriculum. I will never teach private or public again. Ever.

Admin and HR make teaching a nightmare, not the students. Those people choose those careers to make more money and have control. Why is no one 5alking about this. Same story here. My dad had a couple of days left on this earth and similar to you, I had to post to my website and updated CV, which wasn't due to be up until the end of the month. He died while I frantically getting that up online. Then, to add insult to injury, I didn't get FMLA. Just 3 days off. I was gone a year later bc they forced me out. I know why, but nobody ever admitted it. Stories like your, mine and so many others people need to hear. Teaching is a noble profession. We don't do it for the money and are treated with zero respect, much less common courtesy or the time off that is federally mandated.

I have/had/heard about a 4 year old kid that will defecate in his pants if he doesn't get his way. After about 7 or 8 times of this in a 4 hour period, the started telling him that he would have to wait until our lesson was done and I had time before I would clean him up and change him. He absolutely hated sitting in it because he said it was gross. Well kid if it's gross for you and it's your own feces, imagine how I feel. He finally stopped, but he finds other ways to interrupt our lessons if he doesn't want to do them. I also had/have/heard about a kid who kicks, bites, screams, and throws toys if she doesn't get her way. Both sets of parents told me their kids are perfect angels at home and they don't believe in discipline. However, they feel like I should be disciplined or have consequences if I give their children consequences. Can't wait until they have to visit their children in county lock up because their kids have no clue what a consequence is. Totally hypocritical to want me to have consequences but not their child. In my 11 years teaching pre-k the children have gotten increasingly uncontrollable and sometimes violent, but are somehow perfect angels at home.

Now I just accept I am beyond broken. And I will never make a living..I will only ever just survive. Teaching was arguably the worst and most stressful experience of my life. That being said, I decided I didn't want to go into physics research and my options were pretty limited so I decided to try teaching with zero credentials. I wound up in the worst district in the state with maybe 5 professional status teachers remaining. I quit in February and they still haven't managed to find a replacement because no one is willing to work there. That being said, I loved the parts of the job where I just kinda closed my door and hung out with my kids. If you want to talk about my personal experience and what I would consider a red flag or the questions I would ask if I were to apply for a new teaching job let me know and we can figure out somewhere to DM or something

I think that when you are in a school with kids who do stuff like that, it can be easier to get burned out. When you are in a school with more supportive parents, and mostly good kids, you want to teach for longer. I'm sorry for those of you who don't have the support you need

That is kind of a good point but there's also something to be said for the not so great communities. I'm from a relatively poor (for Massachusetts), rural area with a lot of kids who's parents aren't around or can't be super supportive for one reason or another. There was a really big transition between when I graduated and when I started teaching there four years in terms of almost all of the veteran teachers leaving because of the administration. I also left because of the administration even though I wished I could've stayed and kept helping those kids actually feel cared for for 50 minutes per day. As long as the teachers are getting support from admin, there's a lot of reward that comes from giving kids a safe space where they can learn they're worth while people capable of doing things even if they aren't always the best students

You can’t have long term cohesion in the public school system when the system is literally set up into two different “classes” of folks. Teachers, students, and parents are made to listen and deal with the overly and overtly incompetent Admin systems in these schools. Job of the admin- it’s to go to school board meetings and pass out/recommend to who the NO BID contracts will go. It’s usually a board member or family member of the local school board. Ol’ Bill and Bob are the local electrician and plumber for the district where NEVER is there a proper fix to problems but rather a constant stream of tax dollars going to the dips#its who’ll never fix a problem one bc that would be helpful. Do away with admin (saving 2 to 3million per district per yr) and give the reigns to local education boards made up of the districts TEACHERS and parents.

The worst things that ruins a job for someone -burnout -boredom : Lack of opportunity in the work place or mindless unfulfilling work. -unappreciated/over expectations Nothing worse then doing your best and no one seeming to notice and then the minute you pull back you’re chewed out.

If I had physically harmed a teacher my parents would have KILLED me. Why is this such a common story now. I fully believe discipline doesn't have to be physical but it does have to be done.
@thatssovenus
@thatssovenus Жыл бұрын
From how he responded I think the kid might be special needs. He said the kid was in crisis. They may not have even realized what they were doing was wrong . Discipline entails punishment which doesn't really work well on kids who can't understand why something they did was wrong. Especially kids with autism stuff like positive reinforcement for good behavior and teaching the child better ways to calm themself are usually more beneficial than putting them in time out or shaming/scolding them.
@musicmirj
@musicmirj Жыл бұрын
yes, as the other comment said, the child was in crisis. this is not a normal situation. either the kid had some disability and simply was not able to control themselves, or it was a trauma response or anger issues... there are a few more possibilities, but punishment helps with none of those. crisis is not the child being a brat (because i agree, boundaries and consequences for oversteppkng them is necessary in a normal situation). it means that there's an underlying problem that needs to be looked at immediately if it isn't already.

I agree!! that was the real problem with covid was it removed the "free" babysitting service. (The kids I felt really bad for during COVID were kids in abusive/neglectful homes or the homeless kids. For them going to school can be a safe haven, with predictability and stability compared to their out of school lives. )

Ppl freaked out because they have jobs of their own and couldn’t afford a babysitter. It had nothing to do with not wanting to be with their kids. Most Kids act very different at school than they do at home. Do you really think most parents freaked out because they hate being around their kids? 😂

"I didn't realise he was hurting me cause he was in a crisis" this is the core of it all. Most teachers put themselves above their own children but it's not a two way street. The current generation has little respect for teachers because their parents don't.

There's something we have in my country which I thought was a common practice internationally which could have helped here. Where after 6 years of teaching the 7th is a shabatton year, it's a year off where a teacher does some kind of learning/academic development. Granted if it's taken after 6 years the pay is only 70%. However after 10 years in a row its 100% or partical salery and partially payed the academic program of their choosing**. After every "shabatton" the count starts over to the next one. (It's not taken off of their work experience). *Shabbaton, from the word shabbat. **It's not perfect and there is a lot of paper work, one really has to pay attention inorder to get all the benefits, however it's looked upon as a right.

There used to be like 1 behavioral issue per class but now there are 5 or 7 dangerous behaviors per class. Parents, do your jobs better. Sorry not sorry.

I didn’t have a choice when I left. I was severely injured in a car accident and through a few surgeries and tons of physical therapy, I was still teaching. I wasn’t getting better and it was truly the stress and pressure. The last big surgery didn’t go well, and my doc didn’t sign the paper for me to return. He explained that the stress is a huge part. He wasn’t wrong. Now I do contract work with schools, and have never been happier. Meanwhile the teachers I worked with feel the other way or no longer teach anymore. It’s sad.

We would have never even THOUGHT about touching a teacher. First of all, the principal would have paddled you, and then my dad would have beat the ever living s*** out of me. Call it child abuse if you want, but we obeyed, sat in our chairs, did our work. Disrespecting or touching a teacher was simply out of the question.

“Inclusion” has merits but there are pitfalls. Even if a kid just leaves the room for remediation, they miss what happens while they are out of the room. I’ve seen other kids who are so violent an aid had to hold them all day. Extremely physically handicapped kids are taken from room to room by the other kids. One principal won an award the fewest suspensions but he would not allow kids to be sent to the office even if they were disruptive. If classes were tiny it would be one thing, but there can be 30 kids with every need on the spectrum. Teachers are supposed to work miracles and the class is tasked with “lifting up” the lower performing kids. You should try subbing if you have never spent a whole day at a school.

I was a daycare teacher and had a 3 almost 4 year old bite me and 3 other kids within 60 seconds. The other teacher was trying to remove the other kids from the room as he was in full meltdown. I just remember sitting with him as he dug his nails into my arm, and his poor mothers face when she picked him up and said "I'm so sorry." Never saw him again, but I hope he got the help he needed. Years later, I miss being a teacher, but it was so mentally exhausting that I don't know if I could go back.
