H2H Rafa usually always had the upper hand against Fed except on the very fastest surface (grass), because he could better exploit the forehand to backhand exchanges; Fed could seldom generate enough pace and/or unpredictability to worry Nadal on the backhand side, while Nadal's backhand could be deceivingly flat and effective. This was a night Nadal would normally have won; the difference was Fed's improved, versatile, powerful, Wawrinka-like backhand. If Fed had made this backhand adjustment early in his career, there wouldn't be a big-3, just a big-1.

Yes he was also playing exceptionally well in that period but the court was fast which really helps his game. On fast courts, a Prime Federer will almost always beat Nadal and Djoker.

Came back to this video just minutes after I heard Roger's decision to retire.I don't know whether I was expecting to see anything new,since i have seen this video (and many others about him) dozens of times, but I 've just finished rewatching it with tears in my eyes.Tears of saddness in the realisation that I am never going to see my favourite tennis player gracing the court ever again. But also tears of joy for all the memories that have been accompanying my whole life. The MAIN difference is Fed HAS lost on a GOOD BACKHAND DAY.....but Never to Rafa,,,,,it was AAAAALWAYS the reason Fed lost to Rafa. My favourite ever match. Brings a tear to my eye. As a long suffering fan of Federer, having seen him suffer at the hands of Nadal for years, this was redemption. I’ve never seen him play with such guts. Not many guys have won a slam at 35, let alone against one of the greatest ever players. Pretty special I’d say. It’s gonna take a few more years to recover from Wimbledon 2019. He’s injured again now in 2021. Hope to see him play again though.

He had 4 years GS title drought prior, not only did he comeback, he came back strong with an improved backhand which was his weakness against Rafa. Watching these two is the greatest sight in tennis. Both Roger and Rafa are great in their own sense. But Roger for me is the greatest shot maker of all time. Federer had very poor tactics against Nadal in the earlier years, it wasn't just a matter of Rafa's forehand killing the one handed back hand. For example Nadal would serve 80% of the time to Roger's backhand and Roger still did not commit enough space to it. Every time he approached the net he got smoked. Roger has bageled Rafa on clay before so it's not like Rafa is unbeatable without the right strategy

There won't be any excuses about the 16 year age gap between Djokovic and Alcaraz, just two gladiators duking it out. Djokovic is still out there at the top of tennis, Fed is long retired finishing up going down more than 2 to 1 in finals 13 to 6 to Djokovic, almost 2 to 1, 11 to 6 in slams. At the end of the day, Fed's shanky beakdown backhand was only more loved by Djokovic in Federer than Fed's mental weak mode in the big moments. Some players have a bit of an off day the odd time- for Fed it was more often than not against Djokovic in the big matches!

Poetic readdressing of the natural balance. I’ve always thought Federer’s tennis suffered because of some bad defeats to Nadal and I didn’t truly believe it was because Nadal was necessarily a better player. The rivalry evolved in Nadal’s favour and I think this negatively impacting Roger’s psyche and confidence and he didn’t have a good enough coach to help him overcome the mental obstacle and find the solution. This wonderful victory not only exorcised those ghosts of painful losses but set up an incredible winning streak against Nadal where Nadal was crushed 6 times consecutively.
