I don’t agree that the show is worse with Jim and Pam finally together. I don’t think the show hinged on their ‘will they won’t they’ and I adored watching them navigate a healthy relationship with real world issues and compromises. I think it also allows the other characters to take center stage and shine since so much of the plot isn’t focused on their hidden feelings.
@loudemopsychic3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I completely agree, I know it's probably a cliche to say this, but I think the decline really came when Steve Carell left. The "will they won't they" wasn't what made the show great, it was the sparks of greatness and comedy in mundane life, and that still happened after Jim and Pam got together and they got married. What did make the show decline was the writers trying to fill a void that had been left by someone so iconic that it just couldn't be filled in a satisfactory way. And that's not to say that after Michael left there wasn't still some great lines or scenes, there was, the writing talent on the office was brilliant, I just think the show had so much of it's identity drawn from Michael, and without that it was flatter.

Didn’t the show runners essentially re-pilot the show with “Stress Relief”? I would say The Office breaks down into two separate shows, that being seasons 1-4 and then seasons 5-9. You can see a giant shift tonally after the season 5 premiere going from more understated dry humor to over-the-top almost slapstick type humor.
@PatoGuzmanAd3 жыл бұрын
I think The Office has 3 eras, season 1-4, 5-7, and then after Michael 8-9.
@dangerousaniimals3 жыл бұрын
That’s true. Never thought of it that way but I guess that’s why the first four seasons have always been my favorite.
@PhilipJackson033 жыл бұрын
This is accurate, Greg Daniels left as show-runner at the end of season 4 to work on Parks and Rec while Paul Lieberstein and Jennifer Celotta took over. And at that point you see more celebrity cameos, outlandish storylines and as you pointed out slapstick humour that spills out for the rest of the series. I honestly don’t know what seasons 5 and beyond would’ve been like if Greg Daniels would’ve retained the title of show runner. Because he was far more focused on keeping the stories short, simple and relatable compared to the more jokey and lovable crew getting into antics vibe Paul Lieberstein did.
@elijahechicagobearsboyd57343 жыл бұрын
And do you feel it was still high quality after the tone shift?
@andrewiangillies3 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed that thanks! For me it was born somewhere in Season 2. 'The Dundies' was a turning point as you said. 'Office Olympics' brought in some interesting emotion at the end which was great. 'The Client' was genius, and showed Michael's true talent, and that he was attractive to women (quite different from the British version). But the one that I would pick that is The Day The Office Was Born is 'Booze Cruise'. The episode was brilliant, but crucially, Jim (foolishly) confided in Michael, as a friend. Whereas we watched the British version to laugh AT David Brent (and Gareth), it was now clear that the American version wasn't just about 'laughing at' the boss (and his sidekick). Now we are invited to appreciate the complexity of relationship between Michael, Jim and Dwight. It set the American Office up to be able to run for many seasons. Great channel by the way.

I think we should finish the Schurr verse and do when Brooklyn 99 was born For my money it’s the first Halloween heist. I know I’m way late on this one. I actually agree with you about the day it was born. Where we slightly differ in opinion is the relationship between Pam and Jim, but my dissenting opinion is slightly different than others. Most shows or movie series definitely decline when the romantic tension between couples are gone because they are now together. The office brought a fresh change to this issue by constantly having Michael around. Jim and Pam had to navigate their relationship through the unpredictable fields of Michael Scott’s personality. You are right about the shows quality decline with the wedding episode in season 6, which took away the stakes and potential for breaking up. However the mystery, secrecy, and then continuous fire dousing thanks to Michael changed the schema of directors and show runners have when the romantic tension morphs. That’s my personal opinion though. Keep up the great work!

The Office lost nothing when Jim and Pam got together. People only say that because it was a thing in the 80s with Cheers and Moonlighting. Haven't there been at least several KZbinrs who have used the "The Day ___ Died" theme for videos? I swear there have been. Perhaps I'm misremembering that there are or that there have been several. It seems like it was a theme for media video essays that took off at some point and was fairly basic enough that even if somebody originally came up with it, using it wouldn't be thought of as theft. Though I can see how it could be, especially if it hadn't been that long after the original, not giving it a fair amount of time to become what would generally considered fair to be used by anyone...

Back then, shows still got room to grow and find their stride. I'm not so sure that The Office US or Parcs and Rec would be allowed to continue past their first or second season today. Shows have to be an instant hit, or they get canceled. And even if they're a hit, rarely do they get more than 4 seasons as the salaries of the stars get too high, which eats too much at the profitability. You also nailed why the Office US succeeded where a lot of US remakes of UK series failed. They try to copy the dynamic of the original series and it just does not work. The US is a very different country than the UK. Using the same situations, scripts or comedy and making a carbon copy of the original characters just does not work.

I’ll ask this in the comments before watching the video. Does this video containt big spoilers or something? I have never seen an episode of the office (i know, it’s a shame). I have seen clips and it seems super funny! It’s coming to Netflix in a couple of weeks so I’m definitely watching it then. But just wanted to make sure i didn’t ruin the show by watching this?

There's one big spoiler, but it's the most predictable ever. So I wouldn't mind. Also, The Office relies on characters and situations, so the story itself won't be as important as something with a plot twist that could ruin the experience. Btw, go watch the series!!!

Yeah as much as I’d like you to watch this video, it definitely spoils later events in the show. So if you want to be surprised, I’d save this for later. Now go watch it!

Ok, thanks guys! I have saved the video to watch it later, just to be sure. But I'll make sure to watch your next video Elk. Big fan of your work on here! Every video feels like a mini-movie and you always struck the right chord & feeling in my opinion. Keep it up!

Jim & Pam getting together ruined the show --- FALSE 😂😂😂

Tbh, I don't think the show lost anything when Jim and Pam got together. I find "will they won't they" plots to be horribly boring and tired.

I don't know about yall but I always thought Jim and Pam was ehh, and mainly watched for Michael

I liked them when before they got together. There was a sadness that was more relatable. They became more insufferable once they got together and especially once they got married and had a kid.
