For everyone complaining that this is not an episode about medieval castle painting it absolutely is. The thumbnail is probably what is misleading but the the process of sourcing and refining natural pigments, making paintbrushes by hand, painting decorative relief and trompe-l’oeil (and more) are explored. All together a great episode.

It's sometimes really annoying to run into same program with another a name given to it, when you want to see something new.

While at Uni, I spent one summer of independant study firing a wood fired Raku kiln. Hard and hot work! Pottery is amazing.

As a painter I was excited to view this episode. But the first half was disappointing -- although while interesting -- it wasn't what I expected. I'm glad I watched to the end!

It seems YOU are watching the wrong series. THIS series is about what it takes to build a small castle. Also, there was several segments on painting…

21:00 Girl you’re selling our ancestors short. If they can build ships, castles, dams, plan cities, plot maps, etc. I’m pretty sure they knew about light refraction 😅

How did they know in medieval times when the temperature was correct for the tiles?
@sharonoddlyenough2 жыл бұрын
A lot of firings over many years would be observed and experienced tilers would pass their knowledge down to their apprentices. They observe the weather, the weight of the wood to judge the water content, the colour and behaviour of the flames. I bet the tilers prayed a lot because they could control a lot, but they had very little control of the outcome.

@@sharonoddlyenough so off of pure experience. That's wild. Thank u

Ideal consistency of the clay, controlled temperature of the firings, and precise timing. Transforming the humble clay was a matter of learning and experience, still, as the hills of discards have been found surrounding the sites of clay works prove, a delicate process.

It's a series on British and European history. There weren't a lot of Blacks in Medieval England. You want Black culture history, you'll have to look for African history I guess.
